Ah, f*ck it. Let's have the following starting eleven next season (based on who we currently have):
Dudek
Finnan Hyypia Riise
Carragher
Gerrard
Diouf Kewell
Baros Ciise Owen
Carragher can drift between the back 3 and midfield to give support when needed to either area, leaving Stevie free to burst forward knowing that there's adequate cover. A (kind of) 3-1-3-3 formation like this is fine for countering both 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formations as neither defence or midfield should ever really be shorthanded. If we lose the ball in attack, Jamie can press on to join Gerrard in the middle of the park, and if we lose the ball in midfield, he can track back to join Hyypia in defence. And from what I've seen of Cisse, he starts his runs from just in front of midfield as opposed to up with the last man anyway, so it's actually more like a flexible 4-4-2 anyway (or 3-5-2, depending on the situation), with Carragher acting as a pseudo-Hamman defensive midfield role, and Cisse making himself useful in stopping counterattacks building from the opponent's half.
And when Carragher actually has the ball, he can have both Riise and Finnan as options either side acting as outlets to start attacking again. He wouldn't ever really need to leave our own half of the field.
There's goals in that side, Brian.
