Liverpool or celtic. - Who`s song is it?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I know a few die hard celtic fans who are getting on my nerves lately. They swear to me its a known fact that celtic fans sang "youll never walk alone "before us.I ignored them at first but after a few pints on saturday I accepted a fifty quid bet on the matter.I wasnt at anfield in the early sixties but I know the kop started singing it around the same time gerry and the pacemakers had a hit with it.Before that it was used in some camp american musical in the fifties.Thats where the celtic fans claim they got it from.I find it hard to believe thousands of glasgow hard men were singing songs from the musicals in the 1950`s.But I could be wrong.Anyone got any help?

GreenRed Just talked to my source, Song was written by Rogers and Hammerstien for carousel but was not great success.  Gerry Marsden Adapted the song and Made a record in mid sixties. However it did not get into charts. A year later a radio dj in Liverpool started to play it and it moved swiftly up the charts.  The song was played over the PA at Anfield at halftime. Became a regular. When it moved down the charts it was'nt played one week at Anfield and the Kop Faithful decided that was'nt good enough so they improvised their own version. Has stuck ever since.  Song got to Celtic because The Bishops of liverpool wantewd to end sectarianism In Liverpool.  Glasgow had always had similar problems so Celtic and Liverpool agreed to play a match to counter sectarianism.  They learnt the song from our fans.  Heres the words.

When you walk through the storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Gerry Marsden came and sang it before the kop in the last match of the season against Norwich everyone was crying.
The seats started to go in that summer. Great days

I'll Get you the exact dates and facts later.

Gerry Marsden was speaking to Billy Butler on Radio Merseyside today and he actually brought the subject up,he was amazed when the Kop began singing it.
