Jermaine pennant - off to valencia on a bosman

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

ok S@int if you say that we need to address right midfield and sign a world class player and make due on the left, that is pretty much ruling out the option of Gerrard on the right. Why would he ever play there when there is a player of similar quality (and pref better than Stevie in that position) making Stevie only a CM and clogging that position further, meanwhile we are still "weak" on the left. If you sign a player of equal quality on the Left, Riise can focus solely on playing as a LB or get sold, and Babel can focus solely on play as a striker, meanwhile you have pennant (who I think is better anyway that the players on the left but that is not the point I am trying to make in this post) and Gerrard as another option while keeping the central part of midfield relatively strong with Mascherano, Lucas and Alonso as options.

EVEN if you are right that pennant is worse that whoever you want on the left, (which is a point that I am NOT conceeding) I feel the team as a whole would benefit more with a WORLD CLASS LEFT midfielder based on how it would affect the rest of the squad.

Also I realize that Gerrard isn't deployed on the right as much anymore, but I am not really sure why other than he doesn't like being out there which isn't a great reason, because I AM SURE that he would like it A LOT more if we were winning.

Why on earth would you ever want to play Gerrard on the right if we had a world class winger and Pennant as back up? The only possible reason for ever playing Gerrard on the right is because we dont have anyone good enough there. Gerrards best position is central midfield, or maybe we should play him as a right back because he is better than Finnan? The only reason he ever played right wing is because we didn't have anyone else good enough to play there.

You don't play your best player out of position UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. The reason he isn't played on the right anymore is because even Pennant or Benayoun are better than what we had. When Gerrard played right midfield we had a choice Kromkamp, Finnan (both really fullbacks ) or Cisse (striker). We now have Pennant or Benayoun so Gerrard doesn't play right wing, even Kuyt is stuck out there rather than Gerrard.

So we should buy a left winger so we can then play Gerrard out of position?  If you just want that, play him Left wing, he's played there before as well.

If Rafa thought that Gerrard should play right wing, Gerrard would have been playing right wing while Pennant was injured would he not? After all we had Alonso, Lucas, Sissoko and Mascherano who could all play CM.

You play your best players in their best positions WHEN YOU CAN.

When Mascherano first came there was a lot of talk of moving Gerrard back out to the right to allow us to have a midfield pairing of Alonso and Masch, it never happened, why, because we now had a right winger, and Gerrards best position is central midfield.

Gerrard has scored 17 goals this season already from CM, our other CM's have scored 4 between them. Yes Gerrard is better than Pennant ,but Gerrard is a much better player played CM, because if he wasn't, Rafa would play him on the right wouldn't he ?

A fit Kewell is twice the player Pennant ever will be, and Riise is a better left midfielder who can also give the team balance. Babel who will struggle to get a starting spot up front, especially if we bring in a creative second striker (my first option remember)is again another option on the left who also scores goals. As I said Pennant is a good backup but we need better.

I've had just about enough of people complaining. I'm a Liverpool fan, and as a fan of the greatest club in the world, I want success. The only way I'll get success, is by backing my players, my staff and my board to succeed.

Everybody else could do with taking note, and maybe then, we'll all be pulling in the same direction. Then and only then, will we succeed, which is what we all want. I'm not asking for everyone to agree because that's impossible. So complain about particuallar players, tactics, formations as much as you like, but the following week, restore that pride in your heart and believe that this is the greatest team in the world. Becuase we are, and as soon doubt enters your mind on that fact, then Liverpool won't succeed. It's entered my head about Benitez a few times over the coarse of his 4 years at the club, but still every game I'm backing us to win and wanting Benitez to succeed. Some people are looking for us to fail just so they can have a pop at Benitez, board and/or players. Not me, I want success in every game, I never want us to fail.

So if calling Benitez the greatest manager alive is going to haunt me, let it haunt me. I've accepted that he is, because he's managing the greatest side in the world. So I'm 100% behind Benitez, and it's what the rest of you ladies and gents should be.

yes so Pennant wouldn't be a good rw if he isn't playing for Liverpool right?
You just reckon he is a good player because he is playing for liverpool.

I think for a bit there you confused what I was saying, your first statement in bold is the point I was trying to make. Gerrard is all of a sudden less versatile because you have no reason to play him in his 2nd best position.  I think we didn't see much of a Mach alonso with gerard on the right becasue a mash alonso pairing when gerrard is rested or hurt is usually too negative. Now that Lucas is emerging I think it wouldn't be out of the question to see a gerrard masch lucas  LM pairing.

Another reason why Gerrard isn't deployed out there is because he hates it and Rafa already has enough problems to deal with that he doesn't consider him out there as much, and you just admitted to how good pennant is pointing out that rafa prefers playing him on the right instead of gerrard which usually sacrifices alonso these days.

Also you qualified you last sentence with "A fit" and then referenced Harry Kewell, that is a ludacris statement given his fitness history the last 3 years. Then you also recomend a half midfielder have Left back or a half midfielder half striker ROTATING in the position. I do not see how that could be better than consistently playing Pennant or Gerrard on the right.  And Gerrard on the right is better than Gerrard on the left, which is another reason why if we can only buy one world class winger it should be a naturally left footed one

Jermanine Pennant is the best right winger in the world for one simple reason. He plays for Liverpool Football Club. That in itself gives you world class status. Which is why I named the 10 best right wingers in the world earlier, everyone of them has/had played for Liverpool Football Club. Simple as.

Aurellio is the greatest left back in the world, even if he is :censored:. Kuyt is world class. Djimi Traore was as good as anyone. Why? Because they've played for Liverpool Football Club.

I think you should now be banned.

Either you have some kind of multiple personality disorder or about 10 people have access to your account, because your opinions change all the time. Rafa best manager in the world....and then you don't want him year next year.

If you could just tell us at the start of your posts if you are on your meds or not it would be helpful. Still strangely entertaining though.

Not seen them, interesting that as I have long thought he would make an ideal foil for Torres, although I would prefer the crestive second striker.

Okay boys, listen up - this is how it is!

Ronaldo is fantastic week in, week out, against most premiership teams, he isn't good enough yet to rip open LFC, Chelsea,Arsenal, Milan, big Euro games (bar Roma last year), maybe he will in time but not yet. Excellent for league though.

Beckham was always hype and never poised a threat from open play, good at frees and crosses but part of the reason England did very little as no threat from open play down the right- despite the hype, kind of like Anna Kournikova plays football.

Pennant is the best right winger we have and Kuyt shouldn't be asked to play there (not attacking Kuyt but he is a centre forward - not a winger) so Pennant should start every game there.

Pennant, however, is not good enough for LFC so ideally we'd have a new right winger next season but priorities may be elsewhere on pitch.

So you take one of the best midfielders in the world and force him to play somewhere he doesn't want to play, upsetting your best player for no reason...... WHY......?
and you just admitted to how good pennant is pointing out that rafa prefers playing him on the right instead of gerrard which usually sacrifices alonso these days.

What I actually said was :-"If Rafa thought that Gerrard should play right wing, Gerrard would have been playing right wing while Pennant was injured would he not? After all we had Alonso, Lucas, Sissoko and Mascherano who could all play CM."

So its not that Pennant is playing well and "keeping Alonso out of the team" ITS THE FACT THAT GERRARD IS PLAYING WELL IN HIS BEST POSITION WITH MASCH THAT IS KEEPING ALONSO OUT OF THE TEAM.

I said a fit Kewell because by the summer we will know if Kewell will ever be fit, if he recovers the argument is over as a fit Kewell is a far better player than Pennant. If he doesn't we will still have Babel, Riise, Aurelio and Leto that can play there.

Riise has always said his preferred position is left midfield NOT fullback.

Now that Lucas is emerging I think it wouldn't be out of the question to see a gerrard masch lucas  LM pairing.

I don't understand this point, but it seems you are playing Lucas LM ?

So to sum up, you want to play our best player in a position he doesn't like and doesn't want to play, where his manager doesn't play him even though we had Alonso Sissoko,Mascherano and Lucas, because you want to strengthen the left midfield, even though we have better options on the Left. All this when he is the only CM player we have that can score goals.

Almost four years in and Pennant is so far the best that Rafa has been able to come up with in terms of solving our right "wing" problem :( . On the left after the Gonzalez debacle he seemed to have pinned his hopes on a rejuvenated Kewell :( , waste of time.

Does it really take over four years to sort out two positions ?

I still haven't given up on Kewell,  a player needs time coming back from such a catalogue of injuries. If by the summer he hasn't shown anything we should get shut , but I think given the opportunity he will get better(playing wise)and no doubt will be on top form and fit to start in the CL FINAL.( finishing the game might be another matter  :D  )
