Houlliers post match interview - The final straw

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

A defiant Gerard Houllier says he still firmly believes Liverpool will finish fourth despite losing their 10th Premiership game of the season to Champions League hopefuls Charlton Athletic.
The Liverpool manager admitted his team were below par during the 1-0 defeat by Charlton but says the race for fourth place is still well and truly on.

Houllier said: "We missed a good opportunity to build a lead in fourth place. It was down to us and we didn't play well. We only started playing when we were 1-0 down.

"Fourth place is still open and there are four or five teams competing for it. It would be a mistake to throw in the towel and we are still in there. Newcastle have still to go to Aston Villa and we will need some help elsewhere. Newcastle still have four away games.

"It is not finished. Some will say it is over but it certainly isn't and the race for fourth place is still on.

"We had numerous corners, free-kicks around the box but didn't take the advantage. We had many half chances, Stevie had a chance when he was clean through and Vladi had a header saved by the keeper.

"A draw would have been a fair result and Charlton rode their luck at times. We only have ourselves to blame although I wasn't happy with their goal. It wasn't a corner and I think the referee evened it up when he didn't give them a penalty.

"It is a disappointing result and a very disappointing performance and we know we can do better. Maybe the Arsenal game took a lot out of us.

"We didn't hurt Charlton enough and whether Stevie should have a penalty I don't know as I didn't see it, as Phil Thompson was in my view.

"In fairness they had a shout for a penalty with a push before they scored but we had one turned down this season in similar circumstances when Duncan Ferguson pulled down Sami Hyypia. You don't get penalties for that it seems."

this is the BIGGEST load of b#ll#cks i have ever heard in my life. it is quoted on liverpool's website. the guy is talking absolute sh#te. the guy must keep his dignity and walk away. other teams, including the blue sh#te are laughing at us with this guy in charge.

You have to condone any manager who backs his players, but sometimes, as a loyal fan you just need to here the manager say that the lads where sh##e, and it is not acceptable.

Loyalty is great, but it is p#ssing lots of Liverpool fans off, Loyalty to Houllier from Moores, and Houlliers loyalty to the players.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Yes you can usually predict the vast majority of a post match interview with Houllier when we have lost...
References to the amount of chances...
How unlucky we were...
How we lost because of the referee
How the players were tired
The above are pretty standard although on occasions his pride in the players , 2 games in a week , quagmires and other things get a mention

Must admit, i would rather listen to Alan Shearer talk than a Houllier interview. I wish he would send Thommo out to do the job every once in a while coz then we might get an honest appraisal of the game + some sort of realistic criticism on how we played.

Well we agree on some things, BUT maybe instead of defending the players Foolier gave them a kick up the ar*e with a public lambasting we might see them working for their paychecks.
Unfortunately Foolier is determined to hang on to his job and so he keeps the players on his side by NOT criticising their performance even when it is totally unacceptable. AND he has the nerve to call himself a manager.

I have supported Liverpool since 1977. This is the worst team they have ever had. They don't press, or fight for the ball as a team or even look like they know how to win. The players are not playing for the team and that is not good enough.

Bring back Roy Evans because right now I'll take 2nd place and the Wothington Cup
