Gerrard threats! - Sick of it now.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Paul C » Tue Dec 07, 2004 5:26 pm

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard insists he will not accept "second best" by crashing out of the Champions League and into the Uefa Cup.

The importance of Wedesday's crucial Champions League showdown with Olympiacos to Liverpool and captain Gerrard has been underlined.

If Rafael Benitez's men beat the Greek league leaders 1-0 or by two clear goals, they will progress to the final 16 of the tournament.

That will give them another £5m in prize money for the Spanish coach to spend in next month's transfer window, and it will give their most prized asset the centre stage he craves.

Anything less, and that means being dumped into the Uefa Cup draw by the end of this week, will just add to the speculation and rumour about Gerrard's future.

The England star, who turned down Chelsea in the summer, would become an instant target for Europe's giants either in January, or more likely the end of the season.

He said: "This game is not about me and my future at Anfield. But I stated at the beginning of the season, and for a couple of years, that I want to play Champions League football, it's as simple as that.

"I have won the Uefa Cup as a player and I have a lot of respect for that competition but unfortunately it plays second best now to the Champions League.

"As a player and for the club, we do not want to settle for second best, we want to be involved in the Champions League."

Liverpool will have top scorer Milan Baros back after three weeks out with a hamstring injury to aid their attempts to acquire the victory and the winning margin they need.

But it is really all about Gerrard and whether Liverpool can give him the platform to play every season with Europe's elite.

He said: "Nobody is talking about the Uefa Cup at the moment and hopefully that will not be the case come Thursday morning. Everyone at the club wants to stay in the Champions League and we don't want to be thinking about the Uefa Cup draw at the end of the week.

"It's a massive week for the fans because these are the games they want to see, us in Europe and then playing Everton on Saturday. These are also the games you want to play in, but from now to the end of the season the games will just get bigger and bigger.

"There are a lot of things to play for and we want to have a successful season, so we must just concentrate on doing our best in every game.

"I wouldn't say it's win or bust but it is a massive game for me personally and everybody associated to Liverpool."

It is highly unlikely that Liverpool would ever consider selling Gerrard in January with so much else to play for, notably qualifying for next season's Champions League.

But the pressure will mount if they fail against Olympiacos and then finish lower than last season's fourth place finish in the Premiership.

Gerrard said: "It is not about me at the moment, it is about the whole team. Obviously I love playing in the Champions League but so do all the other boys, we have been talking about this game since we lost in Monaco and we all know how crucial it is for the club and for all of us individually.

"It is not about Steven Gerrard in January or the summer, it is about Liverpool beating Olympiacos and we are all looking forward to that.

"It is a massive game, this club belongs in the top competition, and that's the Champions League, and we want to stay in it as long as possible, so this is a cup final for us."

Is it me or is SG always making little threads about CL footie, if he's going to leave then go, if not stop it  :(

If we dont qualify for the second phase of the CL then Stevie has to take his part of the blame. No use crying about if we dont do this and dont do that, after all its partly down to him to get us there!

Absolutley. We has a really good start to the CL campaign this year before we lost key players with injury - including Stevie himself.
If he stays patient, puts in 100% as always and remains loyal - he will win the trophies his talent deserves.

I think this is a classic example of quotes being misinterpreted and used out of context.

Let me show you in a bit, I will re write an article and use the exact same quotes as in the article.

Give me a minute.

This is the same quotes, in the same order, just I have ammended the accompanying words...

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has reiterated his desire to succeed with his hometown club, and push for qualification to the next stage of the Champions League.

The importance of Wedesday's crucial Champions League showdown with Olympiacos to Liverpool Football Club has been underlined.

The England star, who has been in fine form since Rafa Benitez unleashed him into the attacking midfield role of his new formation, has again quashed rumours of a move.

"This game is not about me and my future at Anfield. But I stated at the beginning of the season, and for a couple of years, that I want to play Champions League football, it's as simple as that.” Gerrard commented, showing his will to win and determination to get LFC back on the European map.

"I have won the Uefa Cup as a player and I have a lot of respect for that competition but unfortunately it plays second best now to the Champions League.”

"As a player and for the club, we do not want to settle for second best, we want to be involved in the Champions League." Gerrard is clearly intent on dragging his home town club, and boyhood idols kicking and screaming into the next stages of Europes elite competition.

Liverpool will have top scorer Milan Baros back after three weeks out with a hamstring injury to aid their attempts to acquire the victory and the winning margin they need.

But it is not all about Gerrard, Baros or one player, its about whether Liverpool can prove that under new manager Rafael Benitez, they are ready to rejoin Europe's elite.

Gerrard reiterated his commitment and said: "It is not about me at the moment, it is about the whole team.

I am sure you will agree, the comments have been used to highlight my slant on it well, in the same way the original uses them to make out Gerrard wants away.

These press guys hang on every word. Players really would have to proof read everything they are about to say to stand any chance of keeping a headline away. I think we are getting a bit that way too as supporters. Theres so much speculation maybe we are looking for stuff that is not there. We are overcome with fear and paranoia lol  :)

Well illustrated Mr 0708 :)

It's very easy for a bored media with little else to write about, to misinterpret quotes and put their own spin on things. If you look at Stevie's quotes they're all pretty much straight from the footballers book of "stock phrases" which get wheeled out every time they get interviewed, rather than from the heart & soul of Steven Gerrard.

I have one or two reservations still, but I think if he wanted to go he would've gone in the summer. Let's hope I don't have to eat my words this time next month

 I am really getting p.issed off with Stevie now, whys he saying all this, not one other player is making threats and opening there mouths about if they dont do this and that im leaving, why is he putting pressure on the team and the manager by talking to the press, If he wants to go then let him no player is bigger than LFC and never will be.
He seems to think that we cant survive without him, well we can, he will be hard to replace we all know that but I cant stand this threatening, we have new players a new manager, hes saying we need about 4 or 5 new players ??? .
well what about his team mates he trains with every day and plays with 2 a week, Im sure they feel bleeding great about him saying that they arnt good enough.
I love him dont get me wrong but he will be turning the fans against him with these threats.
We need to consentrate on our biggest game so far this season tonight, without rubbish reports, and to win on saturday.
Look at the sh.it Biscans had for years has he ever spouted his mouth NO.
Hamman, Hypia, Carra, have been with us for years all world class players, never have they give ultimatums.
Hes a very lucky young man to have won these honours in his career.
Just ask alan shearer probably the best striker the prem has seen for years and hasnt even won a runners up medal.

1998/99: Turned pro, finished 7th in Premiership

1999/00: Finished 4th

2000/01: Finished 3rd, won UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup

2001/02: Finished 2nd, won Super Cup

2002/03: Finished 5th, won League Cup

2003/04: Finished 4th
