Does anyone else think we'll go 4-3-3?

If anything I see Torres playing up on his own in a 4-5-1, he's got the pace and skill to get behind defences, something Crouch and Kuyt haven't - especially away from home.

You could put either of Kewell or Babel on the left and either of Benayoun or Pennant on the right - although I see them as being interchangeable and would like to see Babel high on the left in a 4-3-3 come 4-5-1 formation.

I think it will be 4-5-1 and the team will be:

                                     Reina

Finnan            Carragher           Agger       Riise (or Heinze)

                                  Mascherano

Babel              Gerrard                  Alonso        Kewell (or Voronin)

                                  Torres

Yeah, I can see us going 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1 but you could easily go 4-3-3

Pennant does not offer enough of a goal scoring threat to be playing that far forward.  I would only change Kuyt for Pennant (and in a year or 2 I think El Zhar would be pefect that role because it certianly fits his style, just needs to improve his quality, consistency, toughness, etc.) Other than that I think its a top class formation.  Yossi offers nice cover for the RW, Kewell on the LW  Sisokko and Lucas in the centre, Crouch for Torres, Voronnin for any of the front 3.

                             Carson
    Arbeloa     Hyypia          Hobbs    Aurelio
              Peltier      Sissoko     Lucas
Voronnin                                        Kewell
                            Crouch

not a bad second 11

I've put Pennant in there because it's a formation using wingers, not really for 4-3-3. If it were 4-3-3 I'd probably have Kuyt too.

Perhaps I should have done this;

                            REINA

     FINNAN    CARRAGHER   AGGER   RIISE

                      MASCHERANO

     PENNANT   GERRARD  ALONSO    BABEL

Gonna pin the colours to the mast here and say we don't need a winger.

I have stated before that i expect us to be playing a slightly narrower formation next year, either 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or slight variation of same. For that reason i don't think we need an out and out winger ala Mancini or Quaresma (although i think both could be good for us).

I have a feeling that Rafa will deploy the team along the following lines;

------------Reina------------

-Finnan--Carra--Agger--Riise-

---Alonso--Gerrard--Masch---

---Torres---Kuyt---Babel---

or

------------Reina------------

-Finnan--Carra--Agger--Riise-

------Masch------Alonso------

---Gerrard---Kuyt---Babel---

------------Torres----------

From past experience these are his favoured formations and we now have the personnel to play them. Plus we have got plenty of cover in pretty much all positions - (assuming we get Heinze)

Carson for Reina
Arbeloa for Finnan
Hyypia for Carra
Heinze/Paletta for Agger
Aurelio for Riise
Sissoko for Alonso
Benayoun for Masch
Pennant for Gerrard
Kewell for Babel
Voronin for Kuyt
Crouch for Torres

Of that lot Arbeloa, Heinze, Aurelio, Benayoun, Kewell and Voronin can all play multiple positions which gives us even more strength in depth.

Plus we will hopefully have Lucas and Leto learning the ropes over the course of the season and providing additional backup.

I think Heinze will be our final bit of business for the summer and if we get him i will be very excited come 11th August!
