Cabinman - Canadian family's forst trip to anfield!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby cabinman » Tue Sep 20, 2005 2:11 am

hello all;I was a little relieved to see a posting from a yank asking some questions that I had in my mind.and I have a few more,so please bear with me.I(male 51)have been a soccer nut(and liverpool fc fan) in my homeland of canada all my life.(square hole-round peg-I live in hockey country).anyway after much planning I am bringing my lovely wife and 2 soccer-nut sons(11yrs and 8 yrs) old to liverpool at easter to see our first world class football game.I had a posting awhile back about how to buy tickets-so I now have a grip on what to do about that.we will be staying at the days serviced apts.what is the best way to get to anfield from there and can I take my family into a pub closeby for a feel of the gameday pregame atmostphere?also I'm not to worried about hostility from the local football fan-everyone seems to have a relative that lives somewhere in canada...I am looking at the liverpool-bolton game in april-should we bring rain gear-or does the roof cover everyone?one last thing;I have been a member of this forum a short time trying to learn a few things about  the football scene in liverpool and I have to say I am a little taken aback by the seemingly 'hatred' and discust expressed by some members.so I have to know....do you guys really HATE manU and chelsea--and their supporters? or am I missreading the dry humour that liverpool is so famous for? any info would be very much appreciated...the cabinman

I have one word of advice mate, don't call it "soccer", It's football!

And everyone knows we hate the manc tw@ts (wherever in the world you come from). Chelsea have become more and more hated since the Abramovich take over, and then their is the pathetic lot across Stanley Park  :D

thanks for the good natured kick in the pants lfc#1.I am just trying to gauge how deep the rift runs-before I put my kids in the middle of it,and my kid yells 'go blue team go!!' and I know it's called football-if you read my posting-anyway I played enought 'football' in the backwaters of canada, with lots of your expats to know about your rivalries-but I did'nt realize the feelings about other clubs is that intense.for what it's worth -I do not think that russians and americans buying up some of the most sucessfull and storied football teams in the birthplace of 'football' is a positive step in history at all.I think the history books will look at these takeovers with distain..as do I..and I do hope that never happens to the team at anfield...thanks alot lfc#1 ...the canadian soccer nut...also--again call me dumb..I did'nt understand your comment about 'across from stanley park'...give it to me again...the cabinman

the team across Stanley Park is Everton mate. Anfield and Goodision Park are separated by that particular park.

Yeah we hate Man U and Everton fans but not to the point of violence, you'll be safe at Anfield mate, think of it like a church where people go to witness their god and not to cause trouble :;):

I've heard a few 'Americanish' accents around Anfield in my time but like LFC #1 said, don't call it 'soccer' and you'll fit in fine :)

I think football has got a bad reputation in the likes of the US of A because of the violence in the 80's but the game has changed so much since, don't worry about Pubs mate, basically people that go to watch LFC are like a big family, people are that friendly that you'll find that if someone hears your accent rather than kicking your teeth in they will ask where abouts your from and talk to you like any other fellow red, thats what makes the club and the city special

cabinman you'll have a great time, as paul says the feeling particularly on match day amongst reds fans is great. At risk of sounding a bit cheesy it unites people of all different backgrounds behind one common goal - LFC, so you'll never get trouble at Anfield or any of the pubs around the ground on matchday

Your best bet is to get a cab from the city centre out to Anfield (takes about 10 minutes depending on traffic) and arrive about 1.00pm to give yourself plenty of time to go to the pub and the shop etc

You should also go to the HJC (Hillsborough Justice Campaign) shop near the ground and spend a bit of money to help a worthy cause - here's a LINK to their website which you should read through if you haven't already

don't have any concerns about coming over to Liverpool - it's a great city and very welcoming, you'll love it :buttrock

cheers,

For an American the closest you'll get to it in America is the city of Boston and Celtics fans, my ex was from America and she thought Liverpool was soooo much like Boston, well minus the scallys, I had trouble explaining to an American what a scally was  :D
