Andy johnson

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ciggy » Mon Nov 01, 2004 8:03 am

Liverpool have been linked with a possible move for Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson.

Palace paid Birmingham City £750,000 for the 23-year-old in 2002 and following his arrival he's been very impressive banging in goals on a regular basis. So far this season he's got 8 goals, 3 of which have been penalties.

Johnson recently signed a new five year contract but according to reports, Palace would be willing to sell if the right offer came along. It is claimed that they value him at around £6million.

Would he do well for us? We are going to need 2 strikers come january, its not all doom and gloom last season we where without owen and baros due to injury and still got a CL place.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

I think its a classic case of the striker in form in the Prem being mooted around a a ridiculous price.

James Beattie £10M anyone ?

Didn't Johnson miss the penalty for Birmingham against us in the Worthington Cup final of 2001 or am I mistaken?

I wouldnt mind beattie must admit, hes a goal poacher and is great in the air hes something totally different to what we have, pongolle baros and cisse all like to run at defences but very rarely score tap-ins, i think rafa would get the best out of baettie and with our new attacking style he would have much more chances and hes great at holding the ball up as well!

hate to admit it but owen would have scored a hatful this season with us with our attacking play and alonso and garcia setting him up, im still not cheering for him in madrid though, hes a whhanker!

Andy Johnson? don't think he's good enough myself but was talking to that Aki Rihalati (sp?) bloke in the pub a couple of weeks ago and he really rates him. He comes in quite regular with Forssel, now there is a striker come to think of it. Shame he's injured, he'd be ideal.

I guess that's why we don't get paid the 'big bucks' and that's one of the reasons why they do !!

Any footballer is entitled to move, to better himself or to earn more cash. By the same token, clubs are entitled to sell a player and cash in. The issue with Owen is that by his stalling and general ar seing about, we probably got about 10 mill less for him than we otherwise would've. Not only that, but the timing of his departure meant we didn't have time to sign a replacement, something which is coming back to haunt us now. He was a good player for us, no doubt about it but there's a right and wrong way of doing everything.

I personally dont think Johnson is good enough for us, but if you can imagine Liverpool going for him, do you think he would come? I dont, he would know fine well he will not be garanteed first team football, and he would know the fact he would only be here for at least a year until Cisse was fit again.

I can see us maybe, just maybe going for Beattie on a short term contract. I definitely dont think we will go for a big name player, it will be a player like that of James Beattie, someone who wont cost a bucket but does the job well...possibly we will only go for a loan.
