Reds reduce wage bill by ‘£30m’
Published on September 1st, 2011
Written by: This Is Anfield
It’s been a busy summer for Liverpool FC and director of football Damien Comolli. While the big name arrivals have caught the headlines, perhaps most impressive has been the work done to reduce what was a hugely bloated squad and get rid of the ‘deadwood’.

Including loans and free transfers, Liverpool have allowed 19 players to leave the club.

Telegraph reporter Rory Smith wrote on Wednesday night that those departures have cut the club’s wage bill by £30m.

High-earning players such as Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic (both reportedly on £90k per week), Alberto Aquilani and Christian Poulsen have been sold or loaned out.

Meanwhile, a host of young players who were not expected to make the grade at the club have been released.

Even more interestingly, Smith notes that the club have recouped around £25m in transfer fees this summer.

Impressive work Damien, Kenny and FSG. What a difference a year makes.

Good stuff! That means we can have more funds available to buy some top quality players like Hazard once we get into the CL :)

I reckon there is something in there. Even if there was though I doubt Lille would come out and say.

Comolli has good contacts in France, im certain we will at least be in the running for him should we get back into the CL.

it's actually quite frigtening how much of a drain on the club's resources the  likes of cole and degen were. those two were picking up £160k a week between them for precisely sod all in return.

excellent work by the lads working behind the scenes, clearly they've done a fantastic job

£25m in fees as well? Some of them must have commanded at least some fees then. Overall a great window

does the £25m include the Meireles fee, if not, it could be that our net spend isn't nearly as high as people have suggested, also

I don't think were were in the top five spenders due to balancing books.. Manc City have the biggets problems though... no way they can abide by the fiar play rules, whilst showing such huge operating losses !

Interesting comment in today's Telegraph: '....spent £114 million on players with £75 million regained in transfer fees.' Good business.

Few Liverpool fans would have sold Meireles, particularly not to a bitter foe and especially not for £12 million, roughly what Hodgson paid for the Portugal international last summer. That is the measure of the new Liverpool, though. Those who are not required will be cast aside. Dalglish wants only those soldiers he deems necessary; a bloated squadron is a cumbersome one.

"For me, the players they have signed have largely been British, which takes me back to when I started watching Liverpool," said Craig Bellamy, the final piece of incoming business carried out by Dalglish. "It looks so familiar to me, so to be part of it is such a huge honour."

Dalglish has built the squad he wanted: young, energetic, mostly home-grown, and with a passion for the club – but it fits FSG's vision, too. The squad is streamlined – 22 senior players, supported by youth – with this summer's six signings, Bellamy apart, earning a combined, and relatively modest, £13 million-a-season in wages.

That is a saving of £17 million-a-season. FSG are no asset-strippers, though. They have spent £114 million on players in eight months, plus wages, with £75 million regained in transfer fees. This is not a rerun of Liverpool's recent past. This is the start of the future.
