Your countries best ever athlete

while the only athlete that really moved me was eamon couchlan  when in 1983 he won the first world championship in  finland in 1983 (hard for most here to understand but i knew ireland was a :censored: poor bum country as an 8 year old and this guy on his day, beat everyone, i cannot descirbe, and you should be grateful you do not understand - I know coe and ovett were better runners)

anyway - i feel that sean kelly ( i don't know how famous he was in uk  but i think he was the only ever irish  sportsman to be the best in the world at his sport-cycling)

england - daley thompson. i really think that he is up there with ali. unbelievable sportsman, way ahead of bobby moore (who is obviously top class, probably with baresi).

linford christie is a drugs cheat so lennox lewis is the only alternative for me.

scotland has nobody outstanding for me (dalglish/souness/hansen , it is LFC coincidence as I believe all three best ever foward, midfield, defender) but wales had JOhn charles who juve voted  best foreigner in 20kth century ( i don't think calzaghe in same class as roy jones, I could beat ali now - although I believe wales had a top boxer, very light in 1920s)

Northern ireland has  george best iwho is a contender for best footballer  in world ever (emlen hughes said higher level than dalglish) but i find it hard to respect the man but i believe maradonna best ever( or de stefano but never saw) but don't respect the man.

Scotland did have Allan Wells fastest sprinter in the world around 80/81  Eric Lidell too.
Sonia Osullivan needs a mention too for Ireland, she was awesome and maybe Barry Mcguigan and Mary Peters too.

England -- PHIL TAYLOR

  :D Legend!!!

sorry dude but bollox.

black folk are faster than white people and if that offendsyou then f*ck you, no white man has run 100m in under 10s so wells only won because USA boycotted. wells has no standing in history.

sonia was best in world for a few years but never won olympic gold and women athletes have no rivals from muslim countries so downgraded.

I loved mcguigan when i was 10 kbut i now know boxing and the guy he beat for the title pedroza was way above him, not a great fighter. only got the attention because of charisma and the whole NI BS that was going on.

Bit harsh on Mikz there. Bit of an over-the-top jib at him about skin color. What's that all about?

Oh, and Barry McGuigan is from Clones, which is Monaghan, one of the counties in the Republic and not in the North. I don't know why you want to connect The Troubles to his notoriety as a boxer as if to diminish how good he was.

What the :censored: are you on  about you pr.ick? ???
He was gold medalist in 1980  its nothing to do with the colour of his skin and his closest rival wasnt even american (Sylvio Leonard)  He was best on the planet at that time FACT!
Mcguigan is STILL one of our countries greatest sportsmen, whether he was great or not in your eyes. Isnt that what the threads all about?

Following the Moscow Olympics there was a general feeling that Well's gold medal had been devalued by the boycott of the games by several major athletic nations the USA in particular . However he silenced many of the doubters by subsequently beating the Americans that came over for the remainder of the European athletics season .

If we are talking about athletics then it has to be Daley Thompson for me

Daley Thompson as peewee says

to answer big nialls question - a lot of long and middle distance runners are better than his so called coloured runners. however, it should not matter what colour they are, they are all men and women to me

Our local athletes do not deserve to share the same thread as some names I've read around here.

Spanish athletes are way down the level of UK an American ones.

If we understand "athlete" as a physical great sportman, then I'd think of Miguel Indurain and his extra capacity lungs.

My point was that the 100m final always ends up with black men running, they are faster sprinters, no white man has ever run under 10 seconds. None of this is racist, it is fact. other distances this isn't a factor but in pure sprinting it is.

Therefore when America (which was the top sprinting country of the time) boycotted the games in 1980 (I'm sure other countries did too) it devalued the medal.

Isn't he another drug cheat?

yet Wells beat the best americans around at the time during that era so he was in fact the fastest man around at the time - Same with the Italian who beat all the yanks in the 200m for years - his name escapes me .

Dont think Indurain was ever a drug cheat - he just had a higher V02 capacity than a normal man .
