Spanish athletes are way down the level of UK an American ones.

If we understand "athlete" as a physical great sportman, then I'd think of Miguel Indurain and his extra capacity lungs.

Isn't he another drug cheat?

No as far as I can tell.

I love that sport BigNiall, and I'm all for punnishing the cheaters, but I don't like that the ones that have gone through all the tests, have a cloud of suspicion over them.

to answer big nialls question - a lot of long and middle distance runners are better than his so called coloured runners. however, it should not matter what colour they are, they are all men and women to me

My point was that the 100m final always ends up with black men running, they are faster sprinters, no white man has ever run under 10 seconds.

watch out for Morne Nagel then niall

Ok, I was wrong.

I didn't know Wells beat the top Americans and was the best sprinter. I thought he only won because of the boycott. I'm not old enough to remember the 1980, so apologies.

one finger salute to you!
American sprinters have been the biggest drug cheats going, and yet you say them missing devalues it

Ovett and Coe. While Daley Thomson may have been a better athlete for all I know, it was Ovett and Coe that spiked my interest, I have no real love of athletics  but I used to watch all their races AND THEY WERE STREETS AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION FOR A LONG TIME. It was wonderful to watch their contrasting styles as the toured Europe smashing records.

Whether they were better than Thomson is probably a question better left to someone who knows much more than I do, but for me, I thought they were great.

For England must had Redgrave and Pinsent

It's Stephen Roche.  Although I am a fan of cycling, I also accept that the sport is not clean and I'm pretty sure that Roche and Kelly were on the jungle juice when they were at their peak.  Therefore I wouldn't include cycling in this.  In fact anyone who argues that any of the top cyclists are clean are delusional.

As for N Ireland - has to be George Best.  Don't like him as a person and certainly don't like who he played for, but he's the most talented sportsperson we have produced, by an absolute mile.

Someone else who deserves to be mentioned in terms of Ireland is DJ Carey.  Great hurler, a fantastic player, but it's an amateur sport and not an International sport so he's certainly not top of the list.

for me it has to be MICHELLE SCUTT, she won a silver medal for great britian at the 1982 commonwealth games in brisbane, australia in the 400 metres. (just got pipped to the post by australia's raelene boyle)

michelle also won bronze medal in the 1980 summer olympics in moscow, running the third leg of the 4x400 relay. she was welsh champion at  100 metres  (1978,1980-1982) & 400 metres (1979 & 1984). her personal best time in the 400 metres was 51.88 which she ran at the inaugural world championships in helsinki in 1983.

mind you i would say all this cause michelle is MY sister! still so proud of her.

seb coe & steve ovett both attended her wedding day.

the 400 metres final she ran in was the race just before seb coe's final.

greatest athlete in America would either mean greatest sportsman, or sometimes most athletic (running, jumping, endurance, coordination, strength, agility, etc.) sportsman. Although the 2nd is impossible to quantify especially when considering all sports over all time, so in that 2nd meaning its usually done on a comparison basis of who is more athletic between a small selected set.

As far as America's greatest sportsmen go, Michael Jordon, Tiger Woods, Jim Brown, and Jim Thorpe.

Michael Phelps and Jesse Owens for me.  Phelps for being ridiculous, and Owens needs no explanation.

in terms of having tremendous athletic ability, that would have to go to either Bo Jackson or Deon Sanders.

thanks mate, the medals she won are also cool. she also appeared on the tv programme "we are the champions" hosted by david coleman (don't know if you remember that sports quiz show mate) but the best is still to come- she partnered the LFC legend IAN RUSH  on that particular show!!! (THE WELSH CONNECTION) that i'm sure you will agree is very, very cool.

Impossible to look past George Best for Northern Ireland. He was one of the greatest sportsmen in the world.

Elisha Scott - often quoted as the best goalkeeper Liverpool ever had was also from Northern Ireland.
