Im sure most have seen the news lately. Our boys are loosing troops at a higher rate than ever, and we seldom here about the ones that are injured badly for life! There have now been more soldiers lost over there than in Iraq!
Do people think we should be there?

Do people think that we have an hidden agenda...or are they honest when they say they must stop the Taliban to protect innocents over there and stop the risks of terrorist acts in other countries?(Ours included)

Do people think troops have suffice equipment/protection?

Do people think we and the allies can ever win this war?

Would just like to here peoples views on this as I find it interesting...plus the footy chat is Cow Cr@p as theres no games on!  :)

I posted something earlier from a book I was reading without really responding to Barrys opener (sorry Barry !).

So my opinions.

What do people think about it?

I think its a must. Their beliefs are neanderthal to me. They seem to enjoy what they are doing, while trying to enforce there opinion on others. Generally, we dont understand as we are 'Infidels !' and so the only way we will understand, is by killing us. I may be wrong, but how can I understand them, if im dead from a suicide bomber? As I posted earlier, history has shown we have been no angels ourselves. The actions of the Taliban however seem to me, and maybe I am ignorant in the extreme, but to me they seem like a bunch of crazed religious zealots determined to punish anyone who doesnt share what they believe in. And if you do, well done, you are the next suicidal bomber. Weird.

Of course we do ! Im buggered as to what it is though (that would explain the "hidden" bit). We are talking about a government who want to punish those out of work and not paying enough taxes so that our politicians can get their moat cleaned. We are talking about a government who rob the poor to feed the rich. Without a doubt theres an agenda. Which leads me to the next point....

Do people think troops have suffice equipment/protection?

No. With better equipment, we wouldnt be suffering the loss of young men who had a hell of a future. Equipment costs money, and as I explained there are more important things to spend the money on, eg. porn, second house furnishings, claims for your sisters bedroom etc...

Do people think we and the allies can ever win this war?

No. No side will. It will end eventually, but there will be no winner. In the end it will be a case of the allies backing down as the losses will never justify the cause but they will also back down as their cause has been set back severley. A few years of begrudging peace then it will start up again.

And how many d'yer think would have died if "conventional warfare" had continued ? In March 1945 Tokyo was bombed the resulting firestorm killed over 100,000 people.

I do understand your point, think of the long term effects of the atomic bomb anyways, the area is inhabitable and will stay for another 1000 years because of the radiation caused by that bomb. Even its affecting future generations of Japanese civilians living near the areas affected, the radiation is affecting health (creating more disabilities, cancers, infections, etc...). Furthermore its affecting society and future generation of new children.

And I understand your point about about the long term effects of radiation and without dismissing them here's Hiroshima today.

Correct me if I´m wrong Sabre but many, many foreigners gave their lives trying to assist the spanish people against the excesses of your General Franco? If common people dont have morals and decide to fight for justice then the world will happily destroy itself with massive suffering for the victims?

How many soldiers have fought and died in Iraq and Afghanistan for the morals they have believed in. And how many soldiers have fought and died for there respective governments. The common soldier is one who dined on beans on toast and had the occasional surprise of having little sausages mixed in with there beans.

The common politician had Caviar on french bread for breakfast. Morals sign up the soldier to fight for what he/she believes in, the governments control what they really are fighting for.

My cousin (like an older brother to me, all I have is an older sister and younger brother) finished his training last year and they are prepping him to go to Afghanistan.  They have been planning on sending him there for a couple months, I was confused at first, but now with this new assault it all makes sense :(.

He leaves sometime between Aug-Oct.

imo

But the war was effectively over and the Yanks knew it. Dropping those bombs was merely a forewarning and a declaration of power. It was like a "don't f*ck with us because we've got these to fire at you" warning.

The war was NOT effectively over, the US was actively planning the invasion of Japan that would have cost additional 10's of thousands of allied deaths and millions of USD. THAT was not an option, hence the bomb was dropped. I have NO sympathy for the Japs as the atrocities in Nanjing, Pearl Harbour and later in the jungles of asia would bear out.

Operation Coronet and Olympic were non-starters. There simply was no need for them to be launched once Japan was fully contained.

It was well known that the Japanese were close to "sealing the deal" as it were. They were finished.

The US had been reading Suzuki's government comuniques and had been aware that the Japanese were looking for a way to sue for peace.
