Im quite into my gadgets and mobile phones in particular and yesterday saw the start of the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. This event is to me what the AVN awards is to a porn actor so I thought I would let you know what nice devices got announced so you know what to expect in stores in 6 months.

Samsung Omnia HD

This has got to be the pick of the lot with a 3.7 inch full touch screen display and get this it is AMOLED!!!! :censored: me!

Aside from that it's 8MP and shoots video in...........

1280 x 720p HD! Thats right HD!

Display : 3.7" Full Touch QHD (360x640) 16M AMOLED
OS : Symbian S60 5.0 (Full touch UI)

Then all the normal stuff, WIFI DLNA, GPS ect.....

Check out how cool the AMOLED screen looks. You can actually see the difference!!!

Sexy sexy sexy

SE Idou

Now obviosuly unless you have been living under a rock you would know that these days if a manufacturer wants to do well it has to have a decent offering of touch screen handsets. SE have been in the doghouse latley but with the joint venture of the Symbian Foundation there is hope yet. Here is the first handset using this new Symbian Foundation OS. It was only unvelied and not officially announced but goes under the name 'Idou', previous codename was 'Kokura'.

What we have here is a phone whos UI seems to be able to stand up to iphones.

Phone Demo

Hands On Demo

As for specs it has a 3.5 inch touch screen, WIFI ect....infact all the usual things you would expect on an S60 device. And the camera is 12.1 megapixels!!!!! :p it will be announced officially in the Summer. By then Nokia and Samsung will have SF offerings too so I hope this doesn't turn into another Xperia 1 debacle.

Staying with SE the true sucessor to the W910.

ImageImageImageImage

It has an 8.1mp camera, 2.6 inch screen and finally a 3.5mm jack. SE are waking up at last!

There is also a Nokia 8mp device which got announced: N86 however I dont have time to post pics of that right now. But it basically looks like an N85 only uglier.Promotional video

Surprising.

The algorythms required to decode and move HD video (1) are pretty processor consuming, and even some PIV struggle with that.

The processors (mobile phones are not phones any more but little computers) of these machines are not powerful, so it's a bit surprising for me that they have achieved that now.

(1) just showing HD images is different.

I think it is using TI OMAP 3rd gen chipsets which can handle this no problem. The predecessor to that the 2420 is used in many Nokias and other S60 handsets now: N95 8GB, N82 ect...

Iphones sucessor should be using a similar chipset albeit custom made so expect some HD there too maybe.

Yeah I have an iphone too. In terms of usability its great but I have gotten a bit tired of having a dull camera. If Apple don't beef up the specs when they release the sucessor I will go for something else. The original Omnia is ok but tha and this are running on 2 different OS's.

The original OMnia was running on Windows Mobile which is :censored:. This one is running on Symbian S60 which is the market leader. WM will be nice once v7 is launched but until then its slow and ugly imo.

There were plenty of other announcments too. Like a new app store style store for Nokia - Ovi store. And Samsung will launch their own in May. The focus will be on developers as Apple have shown with iphone. Also a new media syncing service for SE called Media Go.

I had a palava with phones a couple of months back.

First pick was an N96 - dont bother - pile of cr@p!

Second was a Sammy i8510 - failed, sent back (nice phone tho)

Third (and current mob) is SE C902 - Ok-ish handset nowt special.

But....

I think i'll also go for an iPhone next. I love all the apps for it, especially the music making ones! i'd be in me element  :p

Still no bluetooth on it though?

Yeah stay clear of the N96. It's quite decieveing that the N96's index is higher than the n95/N95 8GB when in fact it is a worse phone. It's battery is less capacity and it is running on an inferior CPU to its predecessors. If you want to try any Nokia now then your best bet would be the N85. OLED screen!

The i8510 is probably the best phone on the market so i'm surprised it gave you hassle.

I used to like SE phones but no way could I go near a phone with a screen size that small.

If your thinking of the iphone wait till the summer as a new version is due.
