Conspiracy theories... The best and worst?

Was reading the Maddy McCann thread and thought this would be an interesting topic choice...

What do we think? Which ones and why?

My favourate has to be the Paul McCartney conspiracy. There was a rumour he died and was "replaced" early on in the beatles career. The reasoning behind some of it and the stories are quality. I also believed the beatles decided to play on it a little it after it was revealed.

Anyone else got any good ones?

Nah, you're right. It was a bad joke, sorry.

I usually don't believe in conspiracies but I believe in the 9/11 ones. They do make a lot of sense. More than the official story anyway.

My favourite ever conspiracy theory is the one about the

Secret Nazi Moon Base

It's on Wiki, it must be true ! which I guess no longer makes it a theory   :(     :D
The Secret Nazi Moon Base was constructed in the late 1930s by the Third Reich as a potential fortress for Hitler’s brain and the Reich in exile should the planned German expansion into Western Europe fail. The secret rocket science of the Nazis produced the Foo Fighters, prototype Flying Saucers which carried the men and materials to the lunar surface for construction. In the 1940s, when defeat seemed inevitable for the Nazis, they retreated to the Secret Nazi Moon Base and began operating the Reich in exile. The Secret Nazi Moon Base is currently believed to be responsible for the "Boxing Day" Tsunami in Southeast Asia, global warming, destroying the World Trade Center and the Credit Crisis which is currently consuming markets worldwide. The Secret Nazi Moon Base is also alleged to be recording and analyzing all human thoughts by taking advantage of a technology collaboration with the Sony Corporation.

With all media controlled by worldwide security establishments, information about the Secret Nazi Moon Base is unreliable at best. What's known is the fact that Nazis have control of our Moon. This means they control the oceanic tides of the world and can strike any coastal country at any moment. High powered Nazi lasers can also be deployed to strike land based targets. in other words we are *****!!!

Photographic Evidence ?

Who's Been To The Secret Moon Base?

All of the stories from Secret Moon Base survivors are disturbing but some are more shocking than others. Numerous witnesses from the 70's have reported being drugged, waking up at the Secret Moon Base and being confronted by Margaret Thatcher in an interrogation room. A few reported that Thatcher grabbed them by the collar in a brutal choke hold and lifted them off the ground until they lost consciousness. More recent witnesses have reported being forced to act as targets for Dick Cheney in a human shooting gallery of suspected dissidents. Use of the Secret Moon Base for interrogation and torture of political opponents and dissidents has been attributed to many of the world's movers and shakers.

The truth is out there, what's left if for the Government to disclose it properly. Don't count on it though, because the "Underground Government, or the Shadow Government", the one's that truly run the world, would not allow such a thing to happen.

Maggie Thatcher on the moon?

f*cking hell, there is being paranoid.... then there is this.

On a slightly different note, there is recordings by the astronaughts who went to the moon suggesting they're being watched by lifeforms and that there are bases on the moon from alien life which is quite interesting.

Theres a bloke in my office who is fully behind the whole "we never landed on the moon" conspiracy theory. He's Algerian and has a very anti-US centric mind.

Anyone see that conspiracy theories documentary series on the BBC last year some time. It was three episodes in which they took a group of conspiracy theorists or believers and challenged their beliefs with hard evidence. Essentially debunking their myths.

I saw the ones on 7/7 bombings and Young Earth Creationism

That young earth creationism is something I've just looked up... I can't believe what people were saying. I must admit I like a bit of the old astronamy and such and am quite interested in stars, galaxy's astro physics, and chemistry and other bits and bobs.

But listening to what some of these insane people say makes me want to knock seven shades of Sh*t out of them.

How can anyone be that stupid. They make even betty the loon sound intelligent.

Richard Dawkins put it best by explaining how wrong they were in distance. He said something along the lines of if being right was the width of the USA, then these people have only traveled ten yards. Bearing in mind a penalty spot is 12 yards...

I am in the middle of studying for an MBA, we covered conspiracy theories the other day when talking about the 'Washington Consensus' (The Washington Consensus is agreed list of actions nations who are in economic trouble must do to receive financial help from the IMF or World Bank - typically: privatising industry, removing trade barriers, etc. Essentially becoming a capitalist democracy).

Their are some who think that the 'Washington Consensus' is a political conspiracy generated by the US (and western allies) to control the world finances (and subvert socialist governments).

The passage we read summed it up perfectly to me -

Conspiracy theories are troublesome. Many lay persons see more conspiracies than there are, if only because human beings are congenitally prone to believing that someone’s volition must be involved whenever they see order. In reality, Krugman (1998) is right when he asserts that he is disinclined to believe in conspiracy theories because, from what he had seen of world leaders, “they seem a lot like the rest of us: Most of the time they haven’t got a clue”. On the other hand, we must not be so naïve as to treat all order as spontaneous order. As Krugman observes in the same article, “Yet conspiracies do happen.”
