British telecom - Hate, loathing and worse

Is it just me or does anybody else hate BT with a passion? Whilst I have always harboured a niggling animosity toward them for their consistent over-charging they really nosedived in my opinion back in June of last year when I moved house and COMPLETELY f*cked up my order to connect a new phoneline and transfer my broadband service to the new line. At that time I worked exclusively from home and their incompetence caused serious disruption to my business for nearly 4 weeks. The stupid thing is I only moved 100 yards round the corner and right next door to the telephone exchange!

Anyway eventually I managed to get everything sorted after literally tens of hours on the phone with about 50 different BT departments, none of whom had a clue what the other departments were doing.

In June of this year (when my 12 month contract was up) I rang up to cancel the phone line and broadband cos I don't work from home much any more. Simple you would've thought, just cancel the whole service - dead easy. But no, after a week nothing had happened so I rang them to see what was up, only for them to say "oh we can't cancel it over the phone, you'll need to email such and such address". Already annoyed, I emailed that address to confirm I wanted to cancel everything, only for them to come back to me and say they needed corporate approval from Halifax Bank of Scotland Group to do it. Very Bizarre, seeing I don't even work for HBOS!? So I rang them back and got passed round 50 different departments again until somebody finally said "yes i'll cancel the phoneline and the broadband for you".

So there was stupid old me thinking that he would do that for me but no, this being BT it could never go that smoothly. Yesterday they took a direct debit out of my account for the broadband which was meant to have been cancelled from 13th July. So I rang them up and after getting passed around all my old friends in the 50 different departments I eventually get to speak to somebody who says they have no record of the cancellation request and that the reference number I had was not recognised  Then I had to ring a different number and after 1hour 37 minutes of the call (I timed it :wwww ) I eventually got them to agree that the broadband service should be cancelled and backdated to 13th July so they can refund me the direct debit. Now I've lost most of this afternoon thanks to those c*nts. I am eagerly awaiting their written confirmation that everything's been cancelled but put it this way, I ain't holding my breath!

Has anybody else here had any nightmares with them or is it just me who loathes them with every bone in my body?

The stupid thing is, I'd considered switching away from BT a number of times in the past but always had the impression that customer service at the other providers would be dodgy and well, you supposedly hear all these horror stories about people who switch (although I've yet to hear any). Anyway, in January I switched my residential line at home to another company and now have my broadband from them and I also chose them for my telephone and broadband service at my office and they have been EXCELLENT. ABSOLUTELY FAULTLESS. AND they're massively cheaper than BT!!

I'm not going to plug their name on here in case I get accused of advertising but if anybody else wants BT to disappear into the abyss then PM me and I'll give you the name of the company I'm now with who have given me a first class service  :)

phew, rant over!

It's funny how when you want to cancel something it will take you ages but when you're trying to sign up for something you'll get it done in five minutes.

Yea I was on the phone to BT the other day about my phone bill.
Now all I wanted to do was put like a limit on my bill, so that it doesnt go too high. For example once the outgoing calls cost reaches £100 I would no longer be able to make outgoing calls.
BUT NO, they say that is only for NEW customers FFS    WHY??  So annoying, I feel like cancelling and then becoming a New customer so I can do it. But that will be too much trouble and they of course know this!! :(

Reminded me of that bank advert with that annoying guy saying 'Brand new customers only' Im sure you know the one!!!

why not sign up with the many companies who offer the "pre-carrier select" option ? They lease part of a bt exchange and offer cheaper packages.Believe it or not, with say, Homecall (part of the phones 4u group) you can take out their Broadband package which is £25 a month, it offers free landline calls, at least 512 broadband and line rental, you should check whether or not you  are currently hiring your phone(£5 p month ?), if so give it back and buy another. Call centres with less customers = better customer services, ipso facto.   :;):

Telephone companies :( I was once connected with a cable company fu.king pain in the @rse to much hastle to go into here. The company had an office in Liverpool so I thought I would pop in so I could argue with the dumbasses face to face. After abusing most of the staff available, I paid my bill up to date and told them were to stick their telephone line and cable tv box.I asked when I could expect someone to collect the tv box.Unbelievabley Iwas asked if Ihad informed anybody of my intention to cancel, yes I replied, you ,you stupid c.nt.Oh you cant do that you have to put it in writing to our head office.Bollox,I scribbled a sarcastic cancelation and told him to fax it to head fu.king office. As I was leaving,
the cheeky fu.ker asked me to post the tv box back to them.
you delivered it mate, you come and get it,Iam still waiting that was about 3 years ago.

Hah this is dissapointing. This year alone we have invited 2 senior reps from BT over here for talks regarding network solutions. They both spoke extremely well and added valuable information. although appearance fees were quite high.

I must remember never to invite anyone from BT to talk about customer service/relations.

When I first got broadband from BT I was losing the internet connection for a minute or so once or twice at least EVERY day.(some of you may know that I trade the international stock exchanges from home, therefore a contstant connection was vital) At first I had to go thru the rigmarole of speaking to the 17 or so  support techs , you know, the ones that up until last week were working on the checkout at your local supermarket .They help uninstall ,reinstall stuff and then they help you uninstall and reinstall it again ,and then they help you reconfigure your pc and say that "should do it,reboot and call us back if you have any other problems" they are of course hoping that when you call back it won't be them that takes your call. After two months I eventually worked my way up the complaints ladder and received a home visit from a BT engineer to check my phone connections  .His diagnosis ? phone connection was fine ,it must be my pc. Back down the ladder to the 17 support techs and more flipping of pages as they worked thru their manuals . Another month another BT engineer ,this one recomends a new modem and gives me a reference and phone number of the people who supply BT with modems ,they are by the way in the USA ! I eventually  get the new modem ,and the 17 support techs are delighted to hear from me as we once again untinstall ,reinstall various components on my pc.Time passes and the seasons change SIX months after I lodged my initial complaint, BT engineer number three arrives at my flat to once more check the phone line in my flat .Phone line seems fine BUT wait ! this engineer has an idea .He actually walks 20 yds to the BT junction box located outside my building opens it and with his high tech instincts and screwdriver tightens the connection on a loose wire ! . Hurrah !! Problem Solved .
BT ,what would we do without them ?
