I,ve stayed at The Gresham Hotel  several times in Upper O'Connell Street normally get a cheap package on Irish ferries including the hotel.

Juries in Ballsbridge is a nice enough place. Some good pubs up the road but you'll need a taxi to get into town.

Don't stay in Templebar, its a kip.

The Gresham is in Knacker Central, it can be like Beiruit there at times even though its the City Centre.

Another option would be to stay in a bed and breakfast up around Leeson Street.
