Great players, - That are never mentioned.

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

I was thinking about the players that are famous today simply because of the press. Players like Beckham, Figo, Rooney, Lampard etc, they are more famous because of the hype rather than the ability they show. OK, now and again they do something brilliant, but it is very rarely shown and a majority of the time they are average.

But there have been brilliant players who dont even get a mention. Players that put all these prima donnas to shame, in the fact that they are not worthy enough to even lace the boots they wear.

For example:
Thomas Häßler.

Absolutely awesome player. Always in the German team, always performed brilliantly, never mentioned.

Dennis Bergkamp:

Again, a brilliant player, every club he was at he was simply brilliant, but you bring up a Top Ten 10 world class striker list, and Bergkamp isnt even mentioned.

So your turn, name a player that was awesome and is never mentioned.

Hmm not sure if he never gets mentioned (he probably does) Lothar Mattiaus (sp) and their left back at the time Bremmer (I think his name was) two great players, the latter was probably never mentioned. If I recall he used to be able to take penalties and score them with either his left or right foot.

And Steve McMahon.
Champions of England 2020.

Ethan Randall. I still haven't been scouted and it's starting to p!ss me off. :D

Honestly, I've always felt this way about Reina.  Last year, no doubt in my mind, he was the best keeper in the world.  People credited him as a good keeper, but only Liverpool fans understood the difference he made for the club.

Clint Dempsey isn't a great player, but I think he's a very talented player and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Scoring 12 goals for Fulham as a winger this season... Amazing.  Considering he's an American, that just means he's had everything going against him :p

I'm really too young and haven't watched the game long enough to come up with some good players.

Ronald Koeman - he was a great player IMO, the likes of Van Basten and Gullit got the press.

Koeman was awesome, his freekicks hurt me watching them ! Koeman and the De Boer brothers for Barcelona were great to watch.

Shay Given.

Considering most teams in the league wanted him at his peak. I'm so surprised a big European team didn't poach him. His ability matches the best.

Kenny Sansom.

Until overtaken by Cashley Cole in February 2011, he held the record for the number of caps for an England national football team full back, having appeared 86 times for his country between 1979 and 1988.

Gianfranco Antognoni.

Fiorentina's legend(1972-1987), a phenomenon, never mentioned(outside Italy).

100% agree. 2 seasons ago I thought he was one of the top 3 keepers in the league at a time when the English League's goalkeepers were a level above the rest (albeit Casillas and Buffon)
