The current midfield problem.

you know the Hustler talks the most sense on this forum  :D

Ok. I want to Liven up the debate!!

Our Midfield is costing us dear at the moment....

1. We are sitting too deep and losing possesion, especially 2nd half.
2. We aren't creating any chances second half, run out of steam, and lack creativity.
3. We only have Sterling and Allen to come off the Bench and change things.
4. We have no decent wingers to rely on.
5. Rodgers has not brought in any backup, strength in this area in the transfer market.

having watched the first four games, the Midfield is the obvious weak area. Gerrard has no longer got the legs to bomb it box to box, Lucas is a waste of space, and Hendo is not an out and out playmaker, goalscorer or winger. Coutinho, well......He still has it all to prove.

What can we do about this problem area, formation? move players around?  bring in new players? or drop players? What can we do to stop it costing us a top four place. Because it will do, based on the evidence of the first four games. It's a massive problem for us. Suarez will be back soon and I think with him, Sturridge and Moses. We look Ok up front. Defensively we look reasonably solid. Midfield is a massive problem.

So what can we do......Discuss...

Some reasonable points I can see what you're saying. I think we were ok in the first half tonight in terms of midfield possession and creativity though a few more chances created from Coutinho would have been better even in that spell. We got more squeezed in the last ten minutes of the first half Swansea pushed up and we weren't as effective in possession. This became more evident in the second half particularly when Coutinho went off injured.

In terms of the squad there is going to be tactical issue when Suarez returns because if both Suarez and Sturridge start games then unless Moses drops out Coutinho will presumably be moved further back. This will mean a shift in terms of his position with say Henderson being on the bench more often than not. I think that this could be beneficial in terms of Suarez or Moses playing out further wide to give us more creativity in the wide positions.

Otherwise in terms of the squad Ibe or Alberto could be experimented in the midfield to give us a bit more creativity but I would agree that we should have bought another midfielder in the summer, particularly with Downing leaving.

I'm sure once Ozil, Ronaldo, Bale and Yaya Toure join us in January 2014 things will improve in that area  :eyebrow

Coutinho coming off against Swansea was a game changer for us. I expected to see Allen or Alberto or even Sterling to come in for him but it was Aspas instead. We were 2-1 up and Swansea were starting to outrun our midfield and more importantly press us from higher up and I thought the best course of action would have been to add a 3rd man in the middle and look to exploit the flanks on the counter. What we did instead for me was a big mistake and eventually it cost us 2 points. We couldnt adjust and the manager made a tactical error that we could have done without. Admittedly, the quality on the bench doesnt give him that many 'good options' to pick from but I felt he could have done better given the situation.

Another problem I'm seeing is the lack of cover in front of the full backs - both were exposed last night and left with a lot of one on ones. Henderson at times tried to get across and cover the full back but with the way the front three wander off the wide areas we seems to get exposed a lot.

We clearly have fitness problems and are currently unable to play well for 90 minutes.
I do wonder whether we'd be better off sticking Henderson in the middle instead of Gerrard if we start losing the midfield battle.
Gerrard could either go out right or in the number 10 role.

I don't know much if anything about fitness plans but its clear to me that a lot of our players are picking up niggling injuries and we are out of steam after 60 minutes in every game.

I agree that Allen or Alberto should have came on last night after that dirty tw@t Williams did Coutinho in.
Aspas was the wrong choice and we certainly got hammered in the second half with virtually no midfield. Gerrard had a poor game and was at fault for their first goal. Maybe this threat to his family has taken its toll on him? Lucas was bad last night, getting involved in stuff he shouldnt have and losing concentration time and again. When he plays like that he is a liability
The thing is we had at least three of our best players missing and this is always going to be a disadvantage. Take the best three players out of any team and they will struggle. We did well to hold out and nick a point because we would have lost that last year
By the way, I wonder why he has Flanagan  and Kelly on the bench and doesnt use them? Whats the point?

central midfield is probably our achilles heel now which is a b@stard because it`s the most important area of the pitch.
i think up front with suarez, sturridge, coutinho and moses we have one of the most exciting attacking line up`s that we`ve had in years, i think the keeper is top class and although he had a tough debut last night that sakho has an unbelievable amount of natural talent for a big man, him and agger are going to be a top partnership imo when they get to know each others games.
our midfield is letting us down, its just not imposing itself on games and even when it does have a good game its usually defensively, fighting a rearguard action.
cant remember the last time we penned a team back at the edge of their box for 90 minutes.
