Andy Carroll signs for West Ham

The Premiership - General Discussion

Carroll is a poor player and if we continue with this endless defence of everything no
matter how bad it looks then we will continue to play second fiddle to the big
hitters in this division.

Top clubs fix problems and deal with situations but all we do is kick off and put up
the barriers when things are going wrong and it watch it go down the pan in the name of
the great Liverpool 'loyalty'.

I sometimes think we would rather wear the loyalty badge than move this club forward
and Carroll is a good example.

If Carroll isn't quick enough or clever enough to feed off service from Suarez behind opposition defences then there are questions about his future at the club. These kind of questions would never have been asked of Beardsley and Aldridge as a pairing or Beardsley and Rush.

The supply has to be better in the wide positions not just in terms of getting to the byline but the 88 team had so much quality in terms of pass and move that they didn't need to get to the byline that often.

Football has changed but Liverpool always found a way to unlock terms who packed their defence or sat deep in the 70s and 80s. Something has to change in terms of the service to Carroll but what that solution actually will be is unclear. For the sixth goal against Brighton when Carroll headed it to Suarez there were about four of them in the box when the cross came in. Simiarly for Carroll's goal that day there were players in the box. I think that moreless goes halfway to answering the question in terms of Carroll.

Benny I really do admire your loyalty but if Carroll ever develops into anything better than a very average I'll be amazed. I've defended the guy recently because he had a major impact in us beating the scum in the FA Cup but you know one hot day doesn't make a summer. He's supposed to score fkg goals !!!!!!

We have won 2 Premiership games in the last 11 and Carroll has featured in all of them and started 5 so I'm not sure about the theory that we win when he's playing and lose when he isn't comes from.He has scored one goal and that was against an incredibly poor Wolves and he certainly hasn't helped us win in at least 9 of the other games.Perhaps you can enlighten me.

Perhaps this will help you understand where I'm coming from. This is Carroll's record over our last 11 games:

You defended him because he won a flick on?? (which btw is exactly the bogstandard direct hoofball style newcastle played with him)

Easily pleased.

Today we saw Suarez score, Gerrard make an assist, and Sterling do more in 5 minutes than Kenny's dreadful British signings have done in a season. Thats the three players of quality we have in the front six. The rest have destroyed our season, and look like costing Kenny his job.

D-C Does my detailed post about Carroll's extremely questionable contribution over our last 11 Premiership games give the impression that I'm easily pleased? Try to read the entire post before coming out with your usual antagonistic sh.ite !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the rest of what you were saying, im just commenting on how winning one flick on can mean defending a player.

Btw what a goal from Crouch today.

The technique, the awareness, the execution.

Peter Crouch is a better player than Andy Carroll, and yet we sold him (as Spurs did) as we wanted better, and made one step up with Torres, two steps back with the geordie chump.

Stages...

--------------2.Torres
-----1.Crouch
----------------------3.Carroll

D_C It's something you struggle with and it's called support. Don't ignore and demean just how important that flick which made Evra look inept and put Kuyt through to score was to Liverpool FC and the fans. Quite simply we are at Wembley again as a result of that flick so yes I will give the lad some credit but as I said one sunny day doesn't make a summer!

The real purpose of my post was to get an answer from Benny as to his theory that we generally win when Carroll plays which as I have shown is utter rubbish.Benny's admirable defence for Carroll is as legendary as your constant and somewhat tedious unnecessary abuse for a player that is clearly out of his depth.

It's also not just about goals and assists. It's also about what he does for others.

Even yesterday's goal, Carrol didn't touch the ball, but he drew a defender with him, keeping him out of the way of Suarez, or the balls path. Had carroll not distracted the defender, he could have blocked suarez's shot or cleared it off the line.

Ok - that may not be the best example... but there are plenty of other occasions over the last few games where Carroll may not have scored or assisted, but he occupies defenders that the extra man in midfield may not do and he creates space for others.

We are more effective and more successful with him starting, then him not. To re-iterate Benny's stats:

LFC results in last 7 Carroll's starts: WWDWDWW

Last 7 without: DDLLLLL

It's not just co-incidence - it's what he does for the team.
