FA CUP FINAL - DOWN MEMORY LANE

The Premiership - General Discussion

Let us wallow in nostalgia on this Cup Final weekend and take a trip back in time to relive some of the best and worst moments involving Liverpool in the FA Cup Final.....
                                   1950
Liverpool's first appearance beneath the famous twin towers of Wembley stadium was a momentus occasion in the club's history despite the fact that on a grey day in the capital a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal prolonged the wait for FA Cup glory.
                                   1965
For 73 years the fa cup remained a notable absentee on Liverpool Football Club's roll of honour. That changed on the unforgettable afternoon of May 1st 1965.It was a day that many supporters thought they would never see and it was even joked that the mythical Liver Birds would fly from their perch the day a Liverpool team brought the FA Cup home. The game itself will not be remembered as a classic but on a gloomy day in London the travelling Liverpudlians lit up Wembley.Goalless after 90 minutes,Roger Hunt put the Reds in front only to see Billy Bremner hit back for Leeds almost immediately. The FA Cup jinx looked like it might continue but Ian St John headed home the precious winning goal nine minutes from time to ignite unprecedeted celebrations.
                                    1971
In 1971,Bill Shankly's second great Liverpool side was beginning to take shape. His young team, whose average age was just 21,had matured quicker than expected but defeat against Arsenal in the FA Cup Final was a bitter pill to swallow and the image of Charlie George lying flat on his back in celebration after scoring the Gunners winning goal is one that has haunted Liverpudlians ever since.
                                    1974
Those who paid any attention to the pre-match hype that surrounded the 1974 FA Cup Final could have been forgiven for believing there was only one team going to win the cup.According to Newcastle striker Malcolm MacDonald,Liverpool were wasting their time turning up.Fortunately,Bill Shankly and his team let their football do the talking and silenced 'Supermac' with a comprehensive 3-0 triumph.
                                    1977
Bob Paisley's Liverpool had just won the league and were looking to complete the double against Manchester United. It was a sunny day in may and the first half finished goalless. But in a five minute spell early in the second half decided the destination of the FA cup this year.Stuart Pearson opened the scoring which was cancelled out by a wonderful strike by Jimmy Case.A fluke deflection from a shot by Macari won the cup for United.
                                    1986
The first all-Merseyside FA Cup Final was a historic occasion in more ways than one .Reds and Blues famously mingled on the Wembley terraces, while on the pitch Liverpool and Everton served up a classic encounter.A week previous the Reds had pipped near neighbours Everton to the title and the coveted league and cup double was at stake. The Blues were out for revenge and when Gary Lineker fired them into a first half lead it seemed they were going to get just that. But a spirited second half comeback, inspired by goals from Ian Rush (2) and  Craig Johnston clinched a famous victory and capped an unforgettable first season as player/manager for Kenny Dalglish.
                                     1988
Wembley may have been predominantly red on the afternoon of may 14th 1988 but it was the small pocket of Wimbledon fans who were left celebrating after Lawrie Sanchez scored the only goal of a fa cup final every Liverpudlian would rather forget. An early disallowed goal set the tone for a frustrating afternoon that was capped by John Aldridge's infamous second half penalty miss.
                                     1989
In the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster an emotional and thrilling FA Cup Final against neighbours Everton helped restore peoples faith in the game.Just like three years before,Reds and Blues stood side by side on the Wembley terraces and they were treated to a classic five-goal encounter that eventually swung Liverpool's way.John Aldridge opened the scoring after just five minutes but Everton equalized in the dying minutes of normal time.
Ian Rush, that old master derby marksman, cameoff the bench to restore Liverpool's lead in extra-time only for the Blues to draw level again through Stuart McCall.A replay then looked likely but,as he had done so often in the past,Rushie duly delivered.Beating his welsh colleague Neville Southall for the second time to seal a thrilling and emotional 3-2 victory.
                                    1992
It was a rainy day in may when Liverpool faced the 'Black Cats' of Sunderland.3 years ago a certain Michael Thomas denied Liverpool a League Championship with a last gasp goal for Arsenal but today he was to score the winning goal in a 2-0 victory for the Reds.
                                    1996
Losing an FA Cup Final is never a nice experience but when you lose to your bitterest rivals,it's nothing short of disastrous.Liverpool versus Manchester United on May 11th 1996 was one of the worst fa cup finals of all-time and we don't just say that because we lost. The whole match was played out between two sides who did everthing they possibly could to cancel each other out - the only difference between the two teams at the end of the day was a Cantona shot that somehow managed to evade half the Liverpool team in the box before hitting the back of the net.For Liverpool supporters, the misery didn't end there though.not content with having their noses rubbed in defeat by United fans, their beloved were made to look like 'Spice Boys' by the ill-judged cream Armani suits they chose to wear for the occasion.
                                    2001
On a hot sunny day the FA Cup Final took place outside of England for the first time. The venue was the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.Eight minutes remained of the 2001 FA Cup Final and the treble dream looked to be fading fast as we trailed Arsenal 1-0.Suddenly Gary Mac floated a hopeful free-kick in to the Arsenal danger zone and from the resultant melee Michael Owen pierced the back of David Seaman's net.Extra time beckoned but six minutes later Paddy Berger's long pass sent Owen racing clear on goal and flicked the ball beyond the despairing dive of Seaman. The Liverpool fans inside the Millennium Stadium erupted in a state of unprecedented euphoria as Michael Owen somersaulted towards them in celebration. The cup was ours and the dream remained alive. What a day!

Red devil I'm glad you took the time to read the posting. One does have a life outside of football,I can assure you,but when one feels passionately about the beautiful game,as I do,then one has to find the time to express it.I'm puzzled by the fact you thought the article was so long;is it perhaps because it took you longer to read it than me to write it or the fact there was so much information to absorb into your brain?
Still it made interesting reading though didn't it?

had too ressurrect this just to stir some "memories of the way we were" ..........oh it seems so distant now!
