I know this might sound stupid saying this but when you look at the situation at the moment Xabi is the most talked about player in Spain, as well as here , well when you think about it , If they had just come in for him an we would have accepted there offer no problems , he would of just been a player goin to Madid, But now hes all over the news here an there ,his profile has soared, The fans are now desperste for him to go there . demanding of Perez that he gets him, That Perez KNOWS WHAT HES DOING , Hes being one clever little s.it in my eyes , Hes actualy raised Xabis standing with the Madrid fans with all this carry on , an what does that mean , bigger merchadise sales, BETTER IMAGE RIGHTS, tHE GOBSH.ITE IS PLAYING WITH US, for hes benafit,   :nod Unless we hold out for our asking price , an no fecking paying on the hock, They will well an truley of turned us over,

I was going to have a go Devaney, but I got half way through it and lost my internet connection, so I may have another go later on.

All I have up to now is that in the first 10 games Alonso played in 07/08 our record wasn't particularly inspiring:- Won 4 drawn 5 lost 1

to be honest it may be best if Xabi does go this summer. I reckon Mascha will be off to Barca next summer and I really don't want us to lose both of them in one summer. Obviously it would be better if both committed tomorrow

Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing

We need more englishmen, they're in less demand abroad.

it's a world cup year so xabi is gonna be playing his heart out anyway for that and even if it wasn't I wudnt have xabi down as a sulking type.

We could keep hold of him has a quailty year has a good world cup and he still has 2 years left on his contract were talking big big money then ... We don't need to sell. IF they don't meet are valuation so what keep him. He will still give 100%

Well said

Excellent post.

We had too many draws in 2007/8 and 2008/9 and that was our downfall.
Alonso missed a lot of games in 2007/8 - does anybody know the results record for the matches he missed?

I am a fan of Xabi's 2008/9 stand out season but not some of his earlier performances. He plays wonderful precision passes and reads the game brilliantly. His major problem is that he scores very few goals and has very few assists to his name. I know that is not necessarily his game
but could we get a more rounded player that actually puts the ball in the back of the net. Is that a lot to ask of a high valued midfield player?

thing is, not many midfielders contribute much in terms of goals and assists anyways.... the likes of Carrick, Essien, Ballack (new role at Chelsea), Scholes, Iniesta, Pirlo... all have similar stats in those departments to Alonso's...
the problems we have with smaller sides are mainly due to our lack of quality down the flanks... THIS IS NOT A DIG AT KUYT.... but if you take the English league for example... you look at the sides that have won the league in the last 4 or 5 years and you'll see that the difference between the attacking talents in those sides and what we have at Liverpool now is clear..

ManUtd:
had Carrick who played a similar role to Alonsos but again he didnt contribute much in terms of goals or assists.. most of their attacking threat came from them having Ronaldo controlling the game down the flanks with Rooney, Berbatov/Teves providing the quality through the middle.. What Ronaldo does is more than just scoring goals and providing assists... he receives the ball and commands the pattern of play.. with him out of their side, the likes of Carrick, Valencia, Park and Berbatov are going to have to step up big time for them to win anything next season..

Chelsea:
played a more direct style with Drogba being the focal point of their attack... down the flanks they had Robben and J.Cole providing the quality... Lampard providing further attacking quality down the middle... take Robben and Cole out of the side and replace them with good but not top class player in their positions and they miss out on the title for a few years.. good side they are, yes.. but not good enough to win the league...

******

Im not saying its unrealistic suggesting that a 'better rounded' player would offer us more in terms of us being an attacking threat, but to me, its unrealistic expecting such a change to be the solution to our attacking struggles against smaller sides... Aquilanis a good player and im sure he'll add to our attacking play a fair bit, but will it be enough to turn most of the draws into wins? im not so sure...

choices a and b are comparing apples to bad apples.

although scott parker would (hopefully) cost less than Aquilani, the difference between their prices are nowhere near enough to afford villa or silva. so you either need to add in a player of much higher quality to replace N'gog in option b or put in a player of less quality in option a instead of the valencia boys

I would reckon on Silva costing about £20million and Parker "supposedly " £4million Joe.

Aquilani about £20million?

I just threw Villa in to get Nanny's hopes up  :D
