Link? Source? -

I sincerely hope you do not refer to the one put up on the top of the BBC Sports  'gossip section'  :glare:

ESPN

its all over the place im sure if you do a google search you'll find other links aswell... was on ESPN earlier but i still dont think we'd be able to afford him...

Yes, and who is 'generating' these reports?  Thats right - the s*n.

whats your point Sherlock ? :suspect:

So you are quite happy to refer to sources which originate from there then? ESPN/Goal.com all basing their pieces around such statements as - 'according to the s*n' etc

???

'quite happy' ? lets just leave it there RED....

I think we'd better - considering now that you realise the links are being sourced from Ian McGarry's *cough* 'EXCLUSIVE' written in today's S*n.

Call that one a close shave eh.....but the next time, check very carefully before posting up linked reports which are generated by that publication. If anything appears via a credible source in the meantime - by all means broadcast it in a relevant topic.

Anyway, back to Alonso.

Anyway, back to Alonso.

wtf are you on about... i said we're being linked to Villa, you asked for a source and i gave you one... whether the source get their info from the Sun or not is surely a different matter all together... Telegraph, Marca, Eurosport, BBC rumours.. etc etc are all talking about us being in for Villa ... i didnt say it was written in stone or was from bibletalk.com i just said theres a rumour going around that we might be in for Villa... + its all over the boards as well so yea guess everyone should be checking 'very carefully' where every news outlet/tabloid get their info from...

'close shave' ??? and 'relevant topic' ? my initial post had everything to do with Alonso RED you were the one taking this off track ....

Funny stuff the morphing thing, and the comment about the little chief and the little prince of Joe.

But even funnier reading in the press that Madrid has increased the bid, but Liverpool now ask 40  :D and the ice glass is to read the comments of the fúcking Madrid fans on the lines of "Florentino, pay what's required, pay whatever it takes"  :D They're fúcking desperate and Rafa and Purslow are showing to be made of steel.  :D

What do you make of this Villa rumor Sabre? I know it's source is shyte but in terms of a move for him now that Real and Barca are out of the question surley the only club that would interest him are us right?

holding out for 40mill might come back and bite us in the a$s... if Madrid have seriously matched our bid whatever it is then we should probably try to get this deal sorted out and move on to bringing in our replacements right away instead of wasting more time trying to get a few extra mill off of them... this thing has already dragged on long enough, time to start concentrating on the new season and what we have planned for our squad rather than how bad we can fck Madrid over in this transfer....

How?
I think it's the right thing to do, and it's what O'neil did, what Ferguson did with Ronaldo, what Valencia have done with Villa, and what Bayern Munchen have done with Ribery.

We all know the codes that's not ideal to have a player ready to go elsewhere, but I think that yielding to the press trickery and the desires of a player could really send the wrong message to the rival clubs about Liverpool being an easy club to target.

As for Bav's question, I reckon it's hard to believe because the news come from where they come (no Spanish media have said anything like that), and because it would take everything that Alonso would give us, plus 20M, and I don't think we will pay that. Plus, it wouldn't fit the idea of bringing a replacement for Torres rather than a partner.

Well at least now our manager has someone he trusts and that's important. But if what Alonso's entourage says is true, last summer, when Arsenal came to match the bid of Juventus and even increasing it a bit, it was Parry who say no to the move of Arsenal, and Benitez was more than ready to accept. So if all that is true (and that's a big if), funnily we have to say thanks to Parry about that.

How?

Well its quite simple really... we hold on for 40mill and 1 of two things will happen..

A. Alonso stays and no deal goes through..
-could turn out good for us (we win the league, Alonso being a big factor in that, we dont really care how much we sell him for after that...etc etc)
-having a disgrunted player in the squad affects the teams performances as a whole, the player doesnt play to his best, we miss out on the league, next year we're back to trying to find a club thats willing to take him for 15mill...etc etc

B. Real Madrid choose to make a late 40mill bid and we accept their offer... in which case we wouldnt have the time to bring in a player who would slot in and do a job for us... what if our other top targets reject a move ? Aquilani, Silva, Villa... etc.. we wouldnt have the time to bring someone in and we risk going into the new season with a weakened rather than enforced side...

Bottom line is, anything thats going to happen needs to be sorted out soon... if we tell Madrid we want 35mill for him and they offer that we should just accept the bid and move on rather than act like 5year olds and go back to them asking for more... If Rafa quite simply is trying to price him out of a move he should have asked for 50mill from day one and should have made it clear that any bid below that wouldnt be considered... as things stand we're doing the player, and more importantly ourselves, no favors by allowing this whole thing to drag on....

I read somewhere that we are now only 2 weeks away from the start of the season, we need to get this deal done and dusted and start to get our squad sorted for the big kickoff. Hopefully we won't sell before ensuring that we wont also be held to ransom by clubs from whom we want to sign players. Its no point getting £30million for Alonso if we have to pay more for a replacement because we are desperate.

A doesn't concern me, I have enough trust on the professionality of this player, and if players like Villa and Ribery have backtracked and now are ready to fight for their current clubs, I expect nothing else from Alonso. Plus it's a world cup year and he wants to do a good season.

With still 3 years of contract, a world cup next summer, and the possibility of Spain doing a good job in that competition, that might mean that we still could win big bucks with Alonso next summer.

Your B point is a good one to discuss. Yes, there's that risk, and Real Madrid knows that time, in this battle, is an ally for them. But despite being a worry and something to think about, I disagree your bottomline

Bottom line is, anything thats going to happen needs to be sorted out soon...

This is what I disagree. Had we applied that philosophy last season, we could have made Alonso transferable and yield to one of the offers of Arsenal or Juventus. Someone, decided not to sell, and we could imagine that Alonso wasn't very happy with all the saga, like this season.

Bottomline, despite your B point is a decent one, I think that the sorted out soon philosophy isn't good, in the contrary, I preffer the patient and stubborn approach. No one lets their best players for reasonable price these days.

As a side note, I understand the mates who say that a player that is not too committed shouldn't play with us, but in this transfer thingies you have to look at it from the business perspective. Which is what Purslow seems to be doing.
