Bit disrespectful that calling him a little c*nt. He's a world class player that came to us and offerd us 5 years of service and improved our credentials as a team and a club by doing so. If the fella wants to leave, then no one can say a thing about it. It's his career and his life and good luck to the fella. His homeland is Spain also. What else can you say? And when was the last time we were "ar$e raped by Madrid"?

We got Xabi for 10 million and if we do get 20 for him, that's double what we paid. But for what he's worth, I'd take 20 million and one of theirs. Everyone's happy.

Owen springs to mind, mcmanaman,  probably arbeloa too

Now alonso wants to walk out for 20mil, could of at least got us a decent price instead of forcing rafa to let him go for peanuts

How's he going to do that? That's up to the manager and ultimately Madrid. At least he's getting Rafa a price and letting him know the score in an honest fashion. Owen properly f*cked us over by running his contract down knowing full well the club would have no other choice.

Alonso should respect rafa and wait till madrid pay up what we want and the worst thing is he's handing it in 2 weeks before the season starts

Barry didn't hand in a transfer request because he'd have lost out on a big loyalty fee. I'm not sure Xabi has that in his contract.

If he wants to go and RM will pay £30m+ then sell him. If not then tell him he's staying for another 3 years and to get used to it. If he doesn't try then he'll end up on the bench and be flogged to an average team when his contract is up.

The ball is in Rafa's court.

Exactly.

If he isn't sold this season i'm sure he can buy his contract out as he would have 2 years left and will be 28 years old !

Spot on.  The Alonso situation is nothing like the Owen situation.  Owen was dishonest about the whole thing, always delaying contract talks but telling the club he would sign a new deal, then fu.cking off with a year on his contract - Madrid had us over a barrel with that one.

In Alonso's case it was the club who tried to flog him last summer, so he can't be blamed for his nose being a bit out of joint and wanting a move back to his homeland when Madrid come calling a year later.  Credit to the lad the way he played last season after how he was treated by Benitez last summer.  I'm also sure that by handing in a transfer request, a player forfeits part of the money that he would have made out of the transfer.  He knows Madrid aren't matching the asking price and perhaps the transfer request helps LFC get more of the fee as less goes to the player.  That doesn't make him a cu.nt in my eyes.

But bottom line is that if the clubs can't agree a fee then he has to knuckle down and do his best for the club for whom he is still under contract for three years.  Anything else would be unprofessional.  I also believe that if it came to it, he would be professional about it.  Not least because he has already done that for a season when he clearly wasn't altogether happy, and also because it's world cup year and he can't afford to have a bad domestic campaign, wherever he is playing.

I don't hold any of this against Alonso.  I do hope however, that he sees all this haggling as it is - Madrid trying to screw over yet another club, rather than Liverpool pricing him out a dream move.  For Xabi's sake and ours, I hope Madrid put up the cash or forget about it very soon.

I dont hold anything against Alonso either, I'd just prefer it was sorted out earlier so we had a replacement in place to start preseason training with the rest of the squad.

Granada reports just quoted the bid for Alonso ,as somewhere in the region of 28 million ,so I don't know where the ridiculous figure of 20 million has come from ,lets just wait and see what materializes in the next few days ,personally I think there was a reason Arbeloa has gone for such a paltry fee ,lets leave it up to Rafa    :;):

Inclined to agree - I suggested as much in the Arbeloa thread. Just hope it is sorted quickly and Rafa finds a quality replacement.

I like Xabi but it is not the end of the world especially at £28m/£30m for a player that has had one outstanding season after a major kick up the backside. Could quite possibly be replaced with somebody that is more rounded and scores goals!
