Xabi Alonso has informed Liverpool that he would like to bring his five-year stint with the club to an end.

Widespread reports claimed on Thursday morning that the Spanish midfielder had submitted a transfer request following weeks of speculation about his future.

A club source has now confirmed the news, with Alonso having previously only told manager Rafa Benitez verbally that he wanted to leave Anfield.

Benitez had grown frustrated by the uncertainty surrounding Alonso, telling him earlier this week that he wanted the matter to be resolved quickly.

Real Madrid have been monitoring Alonso's situation for much of the summer as they strive to strengthen their squad.

Liverpool have previously made it clear that it will take a fee of around £30million to prise the 27-year-old away from the club.

Real have been reluctant to meet such a valuation but a transfer would now appear to be close.

It is reported that a deal could be struck in the next couple of days for Alonso to join Real for a price in the region of £25million.

Alonso has enjoyed a successful spell in English football, having arrived at Liverpool from Real Sociedad in 2004.

TBH Xabi has been a great player but wants to leave, can you name a single player we have ever had 5 years great service from and then got back treble what we paid for him.

Xab'swas instrumental in the way we played last year but tbh (& just my opinion) but he didn't move the ball quickly enough for me. Yeah the hollywood balls were great to watch but he played only maybe 10 through balls direct to Stevie or Nando last season.

What ever happened top pass and move (forwards that is). It's all well retaining the ball but most of the time he had it 10 yards in front of the back 4.

as i said all the best Xabi lad and thanks for the memories and I honestly wish him all the luck in the world, but I honestly believe Rafa will bring in a more attack minded CM and when we draw those wan*ers in white in the CL just see what happens to their all star midfield as Monster Masch tears them all new a*seholes.

The best is yet to come boys and girls and you can quote me on that!!!! :p
Shankly on boardroom meetings - 'At a football club, there's a holy trinity - the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques.'

I just saw that on SSN, I almost threw the remote at the tele.  WTF is this about?  I guess since he's handed in the request Perez is going to lowball even more.  What a :censored:.  If that's the case I'd be tempted to wait until the last day of the transfer window to sort this out.

Of course I'm just speaking out of anger saying to wait until the last day to give Xabi the least amount of time to settle in to a system.

This whole summer has me beginning to wonder who I hate more the Mancs or Real Madrid.

If that's the case

                     Given

Richards    Toure   Lescott  Bridge

           Xabi         Ireland

Robinho                           Tevez

            Adebayor     Santa Cruz

Get ready to match up against that.   :p

Simple if we don't get what we want , make him play for the reserves , he's got 3 years left on his contract , we don't have to sell . Well done xabi you royally :censored: us up , hand in a transfer request with two weeks to go till the season resumes and with little time to find a replacement. I hope you relise what a huge mistake you have made , nobody ever succeds after living LFC. Fecking :censored: here after all the support in the recent weeks he has recived from the fans

Guillem Balague has told Sky Sports News today that the Spanish giants are once again talking to the Reds about the transfer, though there is a significant disparity between each club's valuation of the player.

"Real Madrid and Liverpool are talking about the future of the player," Balague said. "There's been an offer made by Real Madrid of €25 million which, funnily enough, is inferior to the offer made about three weeks ago, the last time they talked when there was a fax with an offer of €27 million.

"Now it's 25, and Liverpool are asking for €35 million, plus five (million). So there is still a big difference between what Real Madrid are offering and what Liverpool want.

"But the news is both clubs are talking for the first time in three weeks."
