and better than anything we got, nuts and all but still a brilliant defender...cant believe some are calling him poo... hes top class and is only going to get better given his age.... he'd be a great buy but i dont think we can afford him... they signed him for 41million US dollars... dont think we'll be spending anything like that anytime soon for a defender...

Javier Mascherano: Liverpool Must Hold On To Xabi Alonso

The Argentine is tempted to put a 'not for sale' sign around his midfield partner's neck...
27 May 2009 03:43:58

Javier Mascherano has warned that the consequences could be dire for Liverpool if they let Xabi Alonso go.

The Spanish midfield-orchestrator has arguably been the Reds' most bankable performer this season, yet Rafa Bentiez has failed to do enough to convince the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus that they have no real chance of prising him away.

The Liverpool boss recently reiterated that he had no intention at all of selling Alonso, but the Basque-born player has reportedly been made to feel under-appreciated at times over the past couple seasons.

Thus, it is hard to imagine that Alonso - who came close to joining Juventus last year - wouldn't be prone to having his head turned this summer, but Mascherano believes it is imperative that the Reds keep hold of their No. 14.

"Xabi is so influential. Hopefully the great players at Liverpool can stay and we can bring another player in to improve the team," the former West Ham United man told Sky Sports.

"It is important when you have the team in good form you keep the key players, and Xabi is one of them."

Mascherano then stressed his faith in Benitez's abilities, as he reckons a good pre-season should see them compete for silverware on all fronts next term.

"For sure Rafa will work really hard to improve the squad and maybe next season we will be stronger," the Argentine said.

"If we can keep this squad and improve it, things will be really good for the future. We will be fighting in all the competitions, not just league."

Losing Xabi would mean losing any chance of winning the title next season.

End of.

Xabi's a top lad, hopefully this will be resolved sooner rather than later. If he goes it has to be done so we can find a replacement without leaving it too late

I think the way the side is set up, Alonso is an important element. But no player in the side is irreplacable, Man Utd won the league without Alonso, and both Arsenal and Chelsea have done so too. Just as they won it without Gerrard, Reina, Carra, Torres etc. Replacing Alonso might mean a different shape or look to our midfield, but to suggest our title challenge hinges on him is incorrect. I think we all hoped when players like Keane, Schmeichel, Bruce and Cantona retired for man utd that they would derail the manc dominance, but fergie found replacements.

Whether we could sell Alonso and find a better player who would improve our title chances with the money we would have is another matter. It's a shame Diego moved to Serie A, he could have been a good player for us

This situation with Man City apparently spending huge money, perhaps buying Tevez and Barry, shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Nor should it be particularly amazing when Chelsea go and spend big in the Summer, ditto Arsenal. I shouldn't think the Mancs will keep their hands in their pockets for too long either, and it quickly becomes apparent that a couple of teams will very likely significantly improve next term. Once again it brings the point home about the "golden opportunity" theory.

I am absolutely convinced that in order to win the title next season we are going to have to improve as well. Obviously our recent conversion to attacking football and cutting down on the tinkering will help, but it may not be enough if some of our rivals get their act together next season. Selling Alonso certainly isn't going to make it easier to improve IMHO, that's for sure.

The only possible way that it COULD, would be if we were offered waaaay over the odds for him, AND Rafa had a gem lined up on the cheap that only he knew about and that turned good in the first season, and then with the extra dough we were able to compete financially with our rivals to help fill the other missing holes that our owner provided budget could not address.

Either way, Rafa has to get his summer signings 100% right. each pound spent has to get a full pound of talent if not more.  Close to the opposite of last summer, and more of a combination of all his shrewdest moves all rolled up into one summer.
