I have always been a keen admirer of Alonso and have always defended him. He is a very intelligent and cultured midfielder who would get into any top side no problem.

He was not at his best last season, which in part I think was down to a bit of complacency on his part due to his early success at the club. The Barry saga in the summer and the fact that no serious offers from big European clubs came in for him I think have made him wake up a bit and conentrate fully on his football and the club.

He is our player of the season for me, and for me is at an age when he can go on, improve and become the real complete midfield player we have not seen at the club for a generation (Stevie aside).

I don't get how anyone can overlook Gerrard for "player of the season".

Alonso's been very very good. I'll have that all day, second best player by far but Steven Gerrard's been on a different planet altogether. He's practically dragged us to the top of the league kicking and screaming this season and has produced some of the best performances he ever has in his career.

His performances against Chelsea, Everton and Newcastle were all from another planet and some of his goals have dragged us right out of the :censored:. The lads absoloutely, without a shadow of a doubt the best player ever to play for this club and if we ever see another player as good I'll be very suprised. He has everything in abundance and I can't believe the way some people take him for granted.

The main reason we're top of the league is Steven Gerrard. Its as simple as that. The lad hardly ever has a bad game.

Without him I am absoloutely sure, even with a fit Torres we'd be around about 4th or 5th, he really really is that good.

Its because its expected of him, (and he has delivered big time) you take him for granted.

Alonso was waining, and has certainly improved.

Gerrard for me all day though.

I believe that Spain's victory at Eurocup has given Xavi selfconfidence in his game

Gerrard is 2/1 favourite to be player of the year, Alonso is 200/1 and I still think Gerrard has yet to hit top form...... although he looked very close to it against Newcastle.

Gerrard for me all day though.

It is expected of him, of course it is, but this season in particular he's just been sensational. There isn't a player in the country to touch him in terms of ability or form for me.

This season you can count the average games he's had on one hand. Every other match he's been very good to quite simply subime.

I can't remember the last time he didn't stand out in a game.

Agreed that Gerrard and Alonso are the key players of the season, but DON´T FORGET RIERA, he has given us another dimension in our attacking game, and we are top of league in part because his contribution.

When you get know it all, pain in the erse posters like me people look for areas where I've got it wrong and made myself look a mug. They alwys look in the wrong places though which I can never understand. I remember when Chelsea were in for Gerrard, I advocated selling him. I said that if they were prepared to pay 30 million quid for him, we should take the money and buy somebody else. I've been wrong about many things on here many times, but this was probably the most wrong I've ever been. Leons response at the time was hahahahahhahahahah which went on for about a page. He was absolutely right, and time has proven him to be quadrupally so.

I agree with the Tony Cascarino column which somebody quoted. I think Gerrard is currently the best player in the World today.

It's a case of Alonso kicking into gear that has helped Gerrard thrive on the field this year.

The best of Alonso brings out the best in Stevie and while Stevie offers a vastly superior offensive, goal-scoring threat, I believe it is their pairing that really has got us where we are this season.

And as mentioned by an earlier poster, Riera has certainly given us an another dimension - another outlet for Alonso, allowing Stevie to push further up the field and dictate play in the final third :D

Yeah agreed it is alonso who gives stevie the freedom to roam around. His passes are just exquisite. I would include macha aswel. They always try to find a way to get the ball to stevie. I have been analysing them in a few matches and the play is brill. Cant wait for torres to come back.

Best & most influential player in our team currently by a fcuking mile? HELL YES. But I am not sure if I can agree he is the best EVER to play for this club.. yet.

If he continues his form and help us WIN more trophies in the years ahead still left in him.. then he will be there.. But not before. So it is still King Kenny for me.

I know it is "unfair" but best players are never remembered for being the best.. without winning (or in gerrard's case, not winning enough).

In my opinion, that's why Ronaldo won all the personal awards this year instead of Torres, whom I thought (possibly a little biased  ) performed better last season. If Terry didn't miss that fcuking penalty then Torres would be the favorite (after Euro). The fact that Ronaldo won 2 trophies, he became the automatic choice!

But before you come slashing me, of cos it is just a matter of opinion! :D

Would agree with what you said also even though ronaldo won two trophies he was also in cracking form. scoring 40+ goals for a winger. But i still would have preffered torres  :)

But Ronaldo takes all the penalties+freekicks and plays in arguably a better team.. Still a cracking a player no doubt.

Agreed with both you gentlemen.

Without a doubt, Steven's been my player of the season to date and by a fair margin as well. A mediocre game for him is still miles better than most anyone. Expectations of the lad due to his past heroics have left an indelible mark in the memories of fans and when he doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights we know he's capable of, it's seen as him having had a bad game.

It is no coincidence though, that he's upped his game since Xabi's played himself back to form. Both are massive players for us, but there's no doubt in my mind that Steven's the best central midfielder in the world bar none at this particular moment in time..... some say best player PERIOD..... and you'd be hard pressed to argue with that IMO.
