2 games in 2 I picked out the right players ! Played very well against chelsea but then again so did everyone in the red shirt. Although bosingwa was causing a few problems I felt more comfortable with Aurelio at full back and also I thought Robbie Keane had one of his better games.

The Spanish press are writing such praises of Alonso that I feel ashamed of translating them. It's too Alonso biased even for me. Go figures :D

I'd agree though yesterday was one of his best games I remember.

Quality can be seen in players in different ways.

There are players who don't have a range shot.

There are players who have a range shot but always with their good foot.

There are players who have a very good range shot with their good foot, and they're decent with the other.

And there are players who you see them shooting with the bad foot and still looks a natural shot.

See Alonso's goal, regardless the deflection, looking at the shot, to know what kind of quality is Xabi Alonso.

And if you find this too biased, trust me, the Spanish press wouldn't be any better, they call him the total leader of the team and other exagerations I disagree !

bar the slip in the first few mins (which in fairness was hardly his fault and he recovered to make the final block anyway) pretty much everything he did came good =] proved his class again yesterday

boy did he deserve that free kick to go in, shame

hope he keeps it up =]

Yeah makes me laugh how the people that said he wasn't "having a dip in form" (being polite) are now noticing he has actually started to play well again.

Yet those of us that said he was "playing below his best" for 18months or so and were told we were talking rubbish, that we couldn't see the "unseen part of his game" can now suddenly have the scales removed from our eyes and can see how well he is now playing.

"Not as bad as people are making out" does not mean "At his best."

Just to clarify any misunderstandings.

You know as well as I do that when I first suggested that Alonso was playing "below his best"  :) I and a couple of others took dogs :censored: abuse. It was only when Rafa dropped him shortly afterwards (against Chelsea) that a few others started to admit his standards had dropped.

Then we got the irrational defence that he was playing as well as ever ...... just that only the "chosen few" could see it. He was a much better player than he had been, and was much improved! was another "line" thrown out.

Yet strangely,  EVERYONE can NOW see how well he's playing again.

I never slated Alonso, I just told it as I saw it. If Gerrard or Torres went through a similar problem patch, I would say so just the same.

there was absolutely no doubt that after a briliant first season alonso had been playing worse and worse... last season was his worst IMO... and I for one thought that Barry would actually be a better replacement because it just felt to me like there was no way coming back for alonso... not that he didn't have it in him... it's just that players can be affected by confidence and all the situations surrounding him was not at all ideal for a comeback... but what a resurgence alonso's been having... and this shows great great character... all credits to him... now I just hope that he and benitez will patch up their differences if there are any and alonso will play for us for many years...

It's the same old sh!t in here really.

Anyhow, he was outstanding the other day. He passed better than anyone, was very disciplined, pressed, tackled, scored the goal, could've had another. He read the game very well.

Well done Xabi (if you're reading).

Can't be arsed to join some semantic debate about whether Alonso has been "below his best" or whatever words you want to descripe his past form with, but the fact of the matter is that he's been playing very very well these last couple of games (and most of this season in general), in which he has totally controlled the midfield. What really impresses me is the ease, with which he seems to do this. He never panicks, he just calmly selects the right thing to do (most of the time of course, no one ever does the right thing ALL of the time) even if under heavy pressure. Long may it continue  :) .

To think that Plessis was preferred to Alonso in the first league game this season says everything about how much Xabi has kicked on from then.  Rafa should threaten to sell him every summer if this is the response.
