Liverpool signed Alonso from Real Sociedad for £10.5 million four years ago and the Spanish club are set for a windfall if he leaves Anfield. Under the terms of Alonso’s transfer from Spain to Liverpool, Real Sociedad will receive about £5 million if Alonso is sold for less than £13 million and 20 per cent of the transfer fee if he leaves for more than £13 million

Very poor journalism.

Sometimes you don't even have to trust your Spanish red correspondant to know something is made up.

So, if Liverpool sells for less than 13 RS receives 5. If he leaves for 14 RS receives the 20%, that is, 2.8, much less than 5?

I mean, come on.  :D The journo hasn't read his article twice after making it up  with bits and rumours he gets from here and there

You may be forgetting the "Rick Parry factor" Sabre :D

New quotes or something Ciggy?

It would be a bit stupid to say he's for sale if there are not some important clubs very interested.

Txiki Begiristain (Barcelona) has said that the market has a lot of caprices and a big surprise might happen. Real Madrid has failed with Ronaldo, have failed to sign Villa and Cazorla, and they might enter a hysteria crisis as they're not used to be rejected.

Only these clubs in Spain can offer what Rafa pretends. For what I read here, Arsenal do not mad movements when it comes to spending, so it would surprise me Rafa saying once again he's for sale.

Hmmmm.  :(

It concerns me a bit that Bilbao coach Caparros explained yesterday the unpopular selling of a striker they have for 4M pounds with this words "We have to sell players like this to be able some day to buy players like Alonso".

I think Bilbao is too small for Xabi, but Rafa is so willing to sell that I'm worried sick now that Bilbao are gathering money to reach an acceptable offer. It would be a double blow for me.

But do you honestly think Xabi would go to Bilbao Sabre? I doubt very much that he would, but you might know more about this than me. I only think he would leave for quite a big club, and I really don't consider Bilbao a big club  :)

They have won  8 Liga titles. The last two decades have been of decay and most of their decent basque players actually come from RS -- the main reason of hatred, they're youth system do not match ours and they fight us with money.

In terms of results they have gone small, but in terms of money they're not small in Spain. I can see them making a madness to get Alonso, every time a top basque player doesn't play for them it's a personal insult for them.

Xabi going to Bilbao? I can see that happening. For some fans like me they're archenemies, but for many RS players there's rivalry, but not hatred. RS-Bilbao rivalry is more like Liverpool-Everton rivalry rather than Liverpool-Manchester UNited rivalry.

Xabi'd know that would píss off many friends in his town (he'd become a disliked player for me instantly), but if it's true that he's unsettled and having busts up with Rafa, it can happen. :(

I hear what you're saying, but as you mention yourself Alonso knows it would upset a lot of people in San Sebastian if he did. And furthermore, as you state yourself, Bilbao haven't been that great in recent years, and I just think Alonso would rather play at a higher level at this current phase of his career. He's 26 now and should logically be peaking in the coming years, so I doubt he would spend them helping rebuild a midtable team (don't know if this is quite true about Bilbao, so I might be wrong on that one).

On another note, do you think it's realistic for them to match Rafa's 16 million pound valuation of Alonso? You do mention that they are not a small team in terms of money, but 16 million seems a lot for most clubs these days (well, non-english clubs anyway  :;): )

BTW I'm not trying to question you, I'm just curious about the whole situation!

Liverpool’s Alonso Move To Arsenal Could Be On In January?
Submitted by Niraj Prabhu on Tue, 2008-09-09 13:13. Arsenal, Liverpool Premiership Transfer News
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso could yet leave the Anfield side when transfer window reopens in January, the player’s agent suggested.

The Spanish international was fiercely linked with a move out of the Merseyside club in the just-concluded summer transfer window. However, boss Rafa Benitez did not get any offer matching his asking price of £16 million with Juventus and Arsenal being linked but apparently shying away from the price tag, and the 26-year-old also maintained he was happy to stay with the Reds.

However, it seems that the future of Alonso is yet to be resolved as his agent Inaki Ibanez refused to dispel the doubts on his client’s long-term prospect.

"January is a long time away," he is quoted as saying in the Telegraph.

"At the moment Xabi is concentrating on playing well for Liverpool. No agreement was reached to sell him, so mentally he is a Liverpool player.

"But we will see what happens in January."

Yeah Bav, he would certainly solve any problems we have at right back.

Fúcking Ibañez is not only the agent of ALonso but also other players (some of which RS). He's always looking for moves the little :censored: so I don't pay much attention to what he says

Dont mean to sound a :censored: but to be honest I wouldnt want him moving to Arsenal either. A passer of his calibre in a team that likes to pass. Doesnt sound like a good move to me. But as I said if thats where he has to go then we should take one of their players whilst we are at it.

To be fair mate, Rafa tried to sell him during most of the Summer.

I dont think anyone can blame Xabi if he does decide he wants to leave.

Probably not, but Liverpool FC is not only about Rafa Benitez, it's about the crowd. I wouldn't like at all him going to a direct rival, and it would be sickening for me to see him playing well for others in England.

Alonso is going to make today his 50th Spanish cap, and he becomes the 22nd player with most games in Spain's history. At his age he'll be able to climb more positions. I just hope that if he has to live the buyer club pays according to his international status. If silly money is asked for the likes of Barry and Keane, Alonso shouldn't be less.
