PLAYERS RETURN TO MELWOOD
Jimmy Rice 30 June 2008
Eighteen members of Rafa Benitez's squad are back at Melwood today after their summer break.
Non-internationals such as Jamie Carragher, Steve Finnan and Sami Hyypia return today, though those who played for their country earlier in the summer will be given an extra week.

Spain heroes Fernando Torres, Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina will not return to training for another three weeks after leading their country to a first major honour since 1964.

Benitez said: "We have about 18 back today, then some of the internationals will be back in the next week. The four Spanish players should be back in three weeks."

Arbeloa, Reina, Torres and Silva ?  :D

Alonso to reflect on future

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso says he needs time to reflect on his future after admitting he has 'no idea' where he will play next season.

Juventus are reportedly tracking the Spain international, but rumours have suggested that talks between the Serie A giants and Liverpool have stalled as Reds boss Rafa Benitez seeks the best price for his in-demand star.

Alonso, 26, has explained that he needs to take a step back from the speculation in order to contemplate his future as the achievement of securing Euro 2008 glory settles in.

"I've no idea [what the future holds]. Right now I'm just thinking about going on holiday, sitting back and relaxing," he told Guillem Balague's official website.

"We all need time to sit back and think about what we achieved and to take it all in. I'll be able to think about all that has gone on and what's going to happen regarding my future later on. We'll see what happens when I get back."

Unfortunately because Alonso didn't get as much football in the Euros with Senna taking the plaudits, I don't think he has added to his value on the transfer market. Maybe we will now struggle to get our price and have to accept a little less?

For me Juventus is interested to Alonso, but the main objective should be Alberto Aquilani, a Roma Player.
If Roma doesn't sell Aquilani, juve will buy Xabi Alonso.
This is my opinion

He is part of the champion team, and that could not make any harm to his value  ???

I don't see O'neill giving for free Barry even if he didn't make it to qualify for the Euros at all. O'Neill is showing to be a tough negotiator, and I hope we're as tough as him to get what we need.

This is not about the Euros, this is about not selling your good players cheaply if you want to be really ambitious.

The difference is Sabre, O'Neill doesn't want to sell Barry, we presumably need to sell Alonso to fund the transfer. So it really boils down to how much Rafa wants Barry.

Is Barry really worth between £2 to 4million more than Alonso?

I think if Alonso had played well in the Euros we might have got maybe £16/18million for him, Barry is not worth £18million imo and is probably at the very top of his value right now, whether he played in the Euro's or not!

I think if Alonso had played well in the Euros

According to *every* pundit Alonso has played well in the Euros. He hasn't played as much as expected, but he has been MOM once and had good minutes in the final and in the first stage. So let's break the mantra of Alonso hasn't played well, I know it's difficult because we do it out of habit , but let's get the facts right.

The question is WHY we need to sell Alonso. Alonso is interesting to be sold because he has the reputation to give us an INTERESTING amount of money. If we don't get it, I don't think it's interesting to lose Alonso. Note that we also sold Sissoko, so if we also sell Alonso, it's only Barry to come to the team. And IMHO if we're gonna compete for everything we need a deep squad (remember, injuries, Argentina games, etc).

In a nutshell: Sell, if the amount is good for the club. Not send at any price.

I say sell him if we get Barry !!! as he needs more time on the ball, the Prem is to quick for him to get into his passing game, ok so he had a good first yr & is good in europe but it's the league that we want & now we have Mash and co, with probaly Barry coming in who is more suited to the prem then Alonso...

Thing is, we already sold Riise for 5, we sold Sissoko for a decent sum last season, if you sell a Benayoun or a Pennant we should have enough for Barry, who by the way, seems promising for what I read from you lot.

Selling Alonso is not necessary if we only need Barry, even expensive. Things might be different though if we need a Silva-ish player. If that's the case, then selling Alonso is almost a must because we don't seem to have enough backing from the Americans.

I agree Sabre I should have stuck to "played more" and not said "played well".

TBH I am not sure why we are trying to sell Alonso, the only things I can think of is we need cash up front to fund transfers, or there has been something going on behind the scenes?

I thought we sold Sissoko too cheaply as well, but presumably we again needed the money for the Skrtel or the Masch transfer.

It seems we have a "cash flow" problem.

We have got Lucas as well Sabre, and Gerrard can still play midfield if required.

I am quite happy selling Alonso as long as we get someone better (that we need) and we don't get ripped off too badly in the process. It seems to me we are getting possibly a slightly better player in Barry but getting ripped off at both ends.

I quite agree, but sometimes needs must!

I strongly suspect we're considering selling to fund the purchase of Barny which is madness, madness I tell you. He'll be the first player Rafa signed for £7m+ that he's sold, and I was under the impression big clubs don't sell their best/better players.

Whether we sell for a price or the right price depends on how badly we need the cash, we run the risk of doing a Barny ourselves and asking a lot more than the player is worth which won't be such a bad thing if we keep him.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer
