If Rafa sells Xabi - does that mean he intends to use the 4-2-3-1 as our
"standard" formation next season?

The stories are gathering pace now

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso could be on the brink of a £12million move to Italians giants Juventus.

Juventus director Jean-Claude Blanc was in Liverpool yesterday for a meeting with manager Rafael Benitez, according to media reports in Italy.

Alonso, who is in Spain's squad for the Euro 2008 finals next month, has recently claimed he still has a future at Anfield, but a move to Juventus would certainly interest him.

Benitez is understood to have been told he must sell as well as buy this summer as he looks to re-build a squad that were eliminated from the Champions League at the semi-final stages of the competition and finished fourth in the Barclays Premier League.

The Spaniard is trying to tie up a move for England international midfielder Gareth Barry to Anfield for £10million and the departure of Alonso would not be a surprise.

Alonso was one of Benitez's first signings when he took over as manager four years ago, arriving for £10.5million from Real Sociedad.

The 26-year-old has played 163 games for the club and scored 14 goals but found his senior appearances restricted last season following the £18.6million arrival of Javier Mascherano and with young Brazilian midfielder Lucas also making an impact.

He was only a late substitute in Liverpool's final home game of the season against Manchester City and then did not figure at all in the last match at Tottenham.

The Spaniard could be one of several players to leave the club this summer.

Benitez also left out Jermaine Pennant, John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch from the side at Spurs, along with Harry Kewell, who knew by then his contract would not be renewed.

Benitez has already been active in the transfer market having signed defender Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund.

The Liverpool manager is also believed to be chasing Ulrich Rame, Bordeaux's
France international goalkeeper, and Italian left-back Andrea Dossena from
Udinese.

But the possible departure of Alonso will disappoint Liverpool fans, the
Basque-born star being a key player over recent seasons and scorer of one of the
goals in the 2005 Champions League final win in Istanbul

Still doesn't make this prospect of Xabi going any better but the figure being quoted now is £16 million.

Liverpool placed a £16million price tag on Xabi Alonso yesterday after receiving an approach from Juventus for the Spain midfielder. Juventus director Jean-Claude Blanc travelled to Merseyside on Tuesday and met manager Rafa Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry to discuss Alonso's availability.

Though talks ended without a bid being lodged, Liverpool indicated a deal could be struck but made it clear they believe Alonso's value has risen since they paid Real Sociedad £10.5m for him four years ago.

Juventus are considering other candidates to bolster their midfield but are expected to return with an offer that could signal the end of the popular 26-year old's Anfield reign and clear the way for a renewed attempt to prise Gareth Barry from Aston Villa.

With Barry likely to cost at least £10m, and another £9m earmarked for Udinese left-back Andrea Dossena, Benitez needs to generate as much as he can to land his top transfer targets.

Tottenham and Juventus have been linked with Dossena, who has one full cap for Italy, but Liverpool appear to be in pole position for the 26-year old after opening negotiations recently with Udinese sporting director Pietro Leonardi.

The arrival of Dossena, soon after Philipp Degen's free transfer from Borussia Dortmund, would hasten the departure of John Arne Riise, as well as Steve Finnan, Jermaine Pennant, Harry Kewell and Peter Crouch.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson wants to take Finnan back to Craven Cottage but may have his work cut out persuading him to swap a Champions' League campaign for a likely struggle to stay in the Barclays Premier League.

Fulham are also scouring the market for a centre-half, defensive midfielder, left winger and striker to possibly replace Brian McBride and are thought to be pursuing Kewell as well as Finnan.

If he is going then hopefully this'll trigger a bidding war with Madrid and Barcelona wading in.

Rafa ?  :D

I don't think anyone thinks that an on form Barry is better than an on form Alonso mate , its just been a while since Alonso has been on form. He is one of the top earners and it appears we are not going to get the funds from Hicks and Gillet so we have to sell before we buy.

I think there is quite a few should be on there way before Alonso, but maybe we have had no offers for those yet?

Seems that the transfer has been agreed in principle and now we are just trying to get the best price.

I would have preferred Barry to have already signed before letting Alonso go..... if Barry does a Gerrard and changes his mind at the last minute we are going to look fkn stupid having sold Alonso.

We was stupid letting Garcia go, I loved our ball waster but he was special and added something special to our team so when Yossi replaced him he couldnt fill his shoes even though yossi has scored some important goals he doesnt have the same presence, and I cant take to him, were as I loved Luis from word go.

And Im afriad the same thing is going to happen should Xabi leave barry wont lace his boots

i dont watch Villa a lot and Ive only seen cameo appearences for England but I love our Xabi hes lovely and I just dont want him to leave.

And if Rafa HAS to sell him to buy then i will personally feckin kill them yankie pair of tw@ts.
