Spain have qualified so it may simply be a case of not wanting to lose Torres on a longer term basis

Rooney pulls out of England squad

Rooney has shone during England's World Cup qualifying campaign
Striker Wayne Rooney has withdrawn from the England squad for Wednesday's final World Cup qualifier against Belarus because of a calf injury.

The 23-year-old Manchester United striker picked up the muscle strain during Saturday's 1-0 loss to Ukraine.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard will though remain with the squad after having his groin injury assessed.

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster was called up by England following the suspension of Robert Green.

Foster, 26, was omitted from the initial squad because of bruising to his ribs but has now been passed fit and was drafted in for the Belarus clash following Green's sending-off against Ukraine.

Portsmouth's David James is likely to start in goal having come on as Green's replacement on Saturday with Tottenham's Aaron Lennon making way.

England had won their previous eight matches and were targeting a 100% record in Group Six but Sergiy Nazarenko's first-half deflected shot handed Ukraine victory after Green had seen red for fouling Artem Milevskiy.

Gerrard continues his battle for fitness over a groin problem - he was a substituted at half-time on Saturday - but remains in the England camp for further treatment.

Rooney worked tirelessly on Saturday when the side were reduced to 10 men in the Dnipro Arena and will now have his calf injury assessed at England's training base in Hertfordshire, before being released back to the Old Trafford club.

Europe's joint-highest goalscorer in World Cup qualifying with nine goals will be hoping to be fit for United's Premier League encounter with Bolton on Saturday.

Unless injury hits one of his other four strikers, England coach Fabio Capello is unlikely to call in a replacement.

Skysports:

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque insists he will not play Fernando Torres against Bosnia-Herzegovina if he is injured.

The Liverpool striker has been suffering from problems in his adductor muscle over the past week, although he did play 53 minutes in the victory over Armenia on Saturday.

With Spain having already qualified for the World Cup in South Africa next year, del Bosque has assured Reds boss Rafa Benitez that he will not risk Torres if there are any doubts over his fitness.

"Torres is in very good hands here," Del Bosque told AS.

"Yesterday (Sunday) he stayed at the hotel and did not train because we went to a pitch in which there was no stretcher. He stayed at the hotel with the physios.

"Rafael Benitez has called me and I reassured him. We will care very much for Torres, like the rest.

"I told him (Benitez) that we will treat Torres as if he was at Liverpool. If the boy is well and wants to play, he will play against Bosnia. And if he has any problem, he will not play. It's that simple."

Respect
Del Bosque has received criticism from some quarters that he is favouring Barcelona after he allowed Xavi, who is carrying a similar injury to Torres, to leave the squad.

"I insist that there is no preferential treatment and there is the best care for everyone," he added.

"I respect everyone but they have to respect the national team. We have a duty to win and to call up the best.

"I don't care if a player comes from (Real) Madrid, Barcelona or Fenerbahce. Taking a player along for the sake of it has never been my style."

A statement from the Spanish Football Federation said: "Fernando Torres will not abandon the Spain camp as several media outlets have said.

"The forward, who has been hindered by some adductor pain, underwent a scan after lunch which showed encouraging results.

"The player has improved thanks to the physiotherapy carried out by the medical staff and we are studying the possibility of the player participating in part of the afternoon training session."

The proof of the pudding with "injuries" picked up in Internationals or before, friendlies or otherwise, is whether they play the next match. Make it nice and simple, if they don't play for England then they can't play their next 1 or maybe 2 club matches. That way the clubs won't pull fast ones, if a player is injured then not playing is the best thing and the "miracle cure" that the mancs came up with which is if you withdraw from friendlies then you recover just in time for the next manc game would be a thing of the past. What odds Rooney misses England's game but plays the mancs' next game?

Of course the situation is made far worse by the fact that countries have already qualified and to the clubs and players it is just more games that aren't necessary, like friendlies. Is this the THIRD International break in the season already? Must be 5-6 Internationals played in the time Liverpool have played 11 club games and that is ridiculous
