A tsunami watch has been issued across the Indian Ocean after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake, while a second tremor caused buildings to shake in Japan.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre put India, Burma, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh on alert for a possible tsunami following the first quake off the Andaman Islands

It was 20.6 miles (33km) deep and was centred 163 miles (262km) north of Port Blair in the islands, which belong to India, the US Geological Survey reported.

Around 22 minutes later, a second earthquake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, jolted eastern and central Japan.

It prompted a tsunami warning for waves of up to 50cm (20 inches) for parts of the Pacific coast, the country's meteorological agency said.

Houses in the capital Tokyo were rattled by the quake, while a nuclear power station in Hamaoka has closed two units for safety checks.

The epicentre of the earthquake was around 16 miles (26km) deep and 106 miles (170km) southwest of Tokyo.

Paul Caruso, a geophysicist from the US Geological Survey, told Sky News the two quakes were unlikely to be linked.

Actually , I'm looking at the geography of these two quakes , one is in the Andaman sea part of the Indian Ocean and the other is apparently in the pacific, although geographically thousands of miles apart and experts say they're not connected I can't help but think it's more than coincidental.

Happy now Misty ?

Yeah if you can that would be great but it seemed I reached the character limit on that line mate.  :D

Anyway this is really bad news. Off the top of my head I can't remember what the initial earthquake measured last time (Thailand) but 7.6 is quite high.

There was also some reports of a typhoon in China too.

Waves of 20 inches aren't that frightening surely ??? Feck me you get bigger waves than that on our local beach at low tide.

My mate was in Phuket (kata beach) when the last Tsunami hit Mick. He said there was no wave to speak of , just a surge of water that just kept on coming.

A 20cm wave pulse expediting across several thousand miles of ocean, given a large enough bandwidth - hitting the continental shelf, and this is where its energy is dissipated as the wave retracts back against the shallow land and gains massive momentum from the force built up behind it from travelling so far.....would see a significant rise in the sea level generated as a result.

What starts out as a matter of inches can frequently end up being equated to several metres once it eventually hits land.

However this story doesn't seem to be getting much attention...so far. Most after all, are usually false alarms.

Hopefully, fingers crossed.

I hope it doesn't get anywhere as bad as the last one.

red37 it could be that it only happened a short time ago so the news agencies currently don't have any info. Not even the indian/arab news channels have anything yet so it could well be that.

If a Tsunami does not form, at what point after the predicted time will it be considered safe? I suppose we won't know properly for a few hours yet.

It's not even on the breaking news ticker on Sky or BBC now. Was it all just a false alarm?

Apparantly, the Japan quake generated a 'minor' Tsunami of approxiamately 40 cm. But its often the case that the initial 'wave' isn't always the destructive one....like you say, up to a few hours afterwards really before they declare it safe.
