thing is mate we have already have so called youngsters who we can get easily that out of. the likes of spearing in midfield,he has been bought up the 'Liverpool way' pass an move etc, an if he isn't given a chance in the first team on a regular basis, then he will become un-motivateed however good his potential talent maybe.

yes i agree that to win major trophies, you need the best players, especially in the game today but to say another young player from wherever will make any difference because they are young is a wrong assumption for me. the prime example-Ryan babel, young full of promise, full of expectation etc etc an for me has failed to deliver in all aspects of what takes to play for LFC.

the saying 'if your good enough, your old enough' doesn't always apply for me,it's a mif! -what's good enough is attitude, capability,an desire to keep on going when critics put you down, prove them wrong etc. for me alot of ressy players are on the fringe if not challenging for a first team place,i'm so glad Raffa has given alot of the young ressy playes a chance in pre-season.  as it shows that whowever may come into our sqauad young or old in footballing terms they will an have to fight for their place.

alonso's departure as much as it hurts,i only think that signing an experienced player will encourage the younger players we already have into making a statement that we don't need anymore younger players- any player we sign had better play out of his skin week in week out if he doesn't want to loose his plce to a real hungry ressy player, who is more than capable of doing so,through attitiude, commitment an desire.

this cenario is so good for our future,i for one endorse it everytime.

I can see why we are after Poulsen. He is just as good as Cattermole if not better and would cost less than half.
We have no real backup for Masch as I don't trust anyone to do his job at all right now.

And I very much doubt we have any chance to get PL players.

Why?

1) extremly expensive.
2) The ones we want plays for our biggest rivals. Like Everton and Chelsea will ever sell us Arteta and Cole.  No chance and if there was they would demand extortionate fees.

No one knows how much money Rafa will be allowed to spend and no one knows how many positions he is looking to fill.

If he only has 30 million and is thinking about getting a backup rb, cb and striker also besides a cm then he can't afford to splash out alot on one position.

Just begging he isn't spending it all on either Silva and Villa.
Worst value for money ever paying 35 million for either and having to change our formation etc.

Did Yaya Toure sign a new contract at Barca in the end? Last thing I heard was he turned one down?

Never mind alonso's replacement but when are we actually going to sign some friggen players? Lost one of our best players, lost a solid player Arby and no sign of any fecker joining any time soon.

Im so p!ssed off I hate our owners.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Agreed, mate...
I suppose we can only hope that the deafening silence from Rafa as far as the transfer market is concerned is because he's keeping his cards close to his chest and is not going public with who he has lined up.....
And possibly because if he DID name who he's interested in, the price would shoot up because of the 30M we got for Xabi, or the prospect of an auction between us, Citeh and Chavski....

Mind you, Manscum are also pretty quiet on that front. I don't believe for one minute that Rubber Nose is finished on the transfer front...

Aug 5 2009 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

ALBERTO AQUILANI’S hopes of filling Xabi Alonso’s boots at Anfield will rest on the Roma star passing a stringent medical.

Liverpool are confident that a deal can be struck to sign the Italian international midfielder and will step up their efforts to snare him now that Alonso’s move to Real Madrid looks set to be concluded.

But Aquilani’s fitness – or rather the lack of it – could prove a sticking point as the 25-year-old is currently sidelined having undergone surgery on his right ankle back in May.

Rafa Benitez is a big admirer of Aquilani’s technical ability but will need to be convinced that the central midfielder has recovered well enough to be able to withstand the rigours of a Premier League campaign before committing to the transfer.

Aquilani last featured for Roma on March 11 when the Serie A club crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Arsenal and the fact that he made only 14 league appearances last season because of fitness problems is a concern at Anfield.

Despite reports to the contrary, Danish international midfielder Christian Poulsen is not on Liverpool’s radar and no contact has been made with his club Juventus.

As revealed in Monday’s ECHO, Liverpool will receive a basic fee in the region of £30m if Alonso passes his own medical which was taking place in Madrid today.

Real Madrid indicated that they would be willing to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the want away Spanish international during talks held in Barcelona at the weekend and the final elements of the deal were thrashed out yesterday.
Though both clubs have made a commitment to keep the exact financial terms of Alonso’s transfer confidential it is understood that Real have agreed to make additional payments on top of the initial fee on the basis of any success the La Liga outfit has during the first two years of his proposed contract.

Alonso had been due to travel with the rest of the Liverpool squad for tonight’s pre-season friendly against FC Lyn in Oslo but was pulled out of the trip at the last minute after agreement was reached.

Benitez will expect to spend in the region of £16m on Aquilani should he prove his fitness and the Reds boss will then turn his attentions into bolstering other areas of his squad.

Central defensive cover is fast becoming an increasing priority for Benitez with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel both being affected by injury problems following the departure of stalwart Sami Hyypia at the end of last season.

Skrtel is currently recovering from a hamstring strain suffered in Liverpool’s warm up match against Thailand on July 22 while Agger has again been ruled out of tonight’s game because of a back problem.

While Agger remained on Merseyside to receive further treatment teenage Spanish defender Danny Ayala has been added to the squad and could feature against the Norwegian outfit.

But Benitez will be keen to bring in more experienced cover and Portsmouth’s Sylvain Distin remains one possible target.

Stats on Aquilani:

So, according to those stats he started (league games) 7 last year, 11 year before and 9 before that.

Hmmm..... ???

It's more to do with the ridiculously inflated transfer market imo. The top 4 in general have hardly done any major business so far apart from selling players. I expect a mad rush in the next two weeks and I can see us sad gits sat here until midnight on august 31'st going "why is so and so still sat on a plane?"  :D

Aquilani's biggest challenge will be passing a medical.

I've not seen a great deal of the lad but from what I have seen he is more of a box to box player than Xabi and will score more goals. Whether we can control a game as well is another matter.

I think it's virtually a done deal. Who'd have thought it eh? Up until last year we'd never had an Italian play for us. Then two come along in a year.

Aquilani is a good player but I worry about his injury record.  Even if he passed a medical he looks like a player that is forever getting knocks.

That's the bit that really worries me.

I understand that his medical will be stringent, and the clubs docs know what they're doing but still....

that's far worse than Michael Owen's record - and many on here didn't want him  back cause of his injury record.

This isn't one bad season... this is continual knocks, sprains, twists etc.

Risking £5m on injury prone kewell, or degan who came on a free isn't half the risk of £18M worth of a central midfielder
