I think that rather than seeking a player to counter what Alonso has left providing, we should look instead to the squad we have and sign what we need most.
Poulsen, who I watched often while he played for Sevilla would be a total guarantee midfielder to substitute Mascherano when he's not available. In that sense I'd like to have him. Good player. And he may come in a reasonable price I think.
Aquilani, I don't know anything of him. All I know is he's pretty expensive, and with a worrying injury record. We can't afford more cases of spending more than 10M (Kuyt, Babel, Keane) and failing to deliver. We have to be spot on in that >10M signing. Aquilani worries me but in Rafa I trust.
Arteta? I didn't know Bob came with it first, but yeh, I think he'd make our team better and would give us a better option than Kuyt in the right, and a proper replacement should Steve is not available. More competent than Lucas too. Yeh, good signing, but for how much?
I think we need overall a proper striker for when Torres is not available. Playing Ngogs or Voronins cost points during a season (no matter if you have a Rafa or a Mourinho managing them). So we need a very good striker. Not comparable to Torres, simply a top division striker (Guiza, Negredo since I know the spanish players a bit more) . There are many options.
For the midfield, I think we have to build around the powerful skeleton of Mascherano the chief of defence, and Gerrard the chief of attacking midfield. We don't necessarily have to buy a expensive midfielder. I think Poulsen could do and he wouldn't be that expensive as Aquilani.
Whatever we do, we have to be spot on in the next >10M buy. It's crucial.
