Whether or not he was a good player is irrelevant, Rafa, Maureen and Wenger were all very average players but became very good coaches and managers, lets give the guy a chance.

Exactly Heimdell, any help that rafa can get, sammy and now this dude has to be beneficial to the club

I'm all for giving people a chance, lads, but come on - the barren years have gone on a bit long now, have they not....Surely it's time to employ a coach (or any member of the coaching staff) with a few more credentials.....and especially one who had a nightmare stay with the club....
You could argue that for Rafa as well, but let's not go there in this thread....

If there's any truth to what Saint is saying here, then there's your answer to the question 'why this guy?'.  Rafa is devoted to the zonal marking system but has acknowledged that we've gone from conceding 6 goals via set pieces 2 years ago to 16 last year (said as much in a recent interview, I believe).  With Pako gone I suspect he's decided to bring in someone who knows the zonal marking system inside and out to drill the lads--including the new signings, who need to be brought up to speed sharpish.  Since zonal marking is neither well established nor exceedingly popular in Britain (including among certain members on here) I'm not surprised he hasn't brought in a British coach to help reinforce it.  The proof will be in the pudding, of course.  If we concede far fewer goals from set pieces this season, Rafa will be vindicated (well, at least by a few people anyway :D ).

Well said...
We've been cack at marking, esp. from set pieces. I can think immediately of a handful of key goals conceded that could conceivably have had a significant input as to where we either finished at the end of the season, or how close we came to those above us. You could also say that had *those* results gone a different way, we could have been even closer again to the top of the table.
I'm no footie coach, but it ain't working. I don't think zonal marking is the best approach anyway, but then who am I to question it : I don't have a UEFA licence !!
Bakc to basics - leave this zonal lark to the birds...

:D  I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to pipe up with the idea of binning zonal marking!  I've had this discussion too many times with too many people on here over the last few years to go over it all again.  Suffice to say that, IMO, zonal marking works and I'd prefer we stuck to it--just executed it better.  What I think doesn't matter though because there's not a snowball's chance in hell that Rafa's going to abandon this system.  Given that reality, it makes sense to bring someone in who knows the system in order to drill the lads.

Its his first coaching job and quite a way to start frankly with a position at Liverpool.

You would really expect someone with experience to come in but I guess its who you know not what you know like in many walks of life.

Surely Liverpool could attract some exceptional coaches with a proven track record if the position was advertised but seemingly Benitez had decided to hand his pal a job and I just hope hes up to it.

I have to laugh when people talk about Pellegrino as if he was some kind of comedy defender along the lines of a Phil Babb or Bjorn Kvarme.  He had a poor half season with us at the age of about 33 after injuries had all but wrecked his career at Valencia, but in his earlier days he would have graced any side in Europe, pure quality for Valencia and Argentina.

I think he'll be a good addition to the coaching staff.  He was one of the best in the business as a player when it came to zonal marking and he could help eradicate what was a major weakness for us this past season.

It could be due that he was a former defender and rafa wants him to work closely with the team and he surely has valuable knowledge , he's something like hypia except for equipped in that sense , never was the best player for us but i think this is a good signing

agree with you there.....he WAS a great player...sadly we never got to see that here. Mind you, he was better than Paletta!

Several reasons i guess:

- He knows the manager's ideas having worked with him before

- The manager probably earmarked him as a coach a while go, no doubt he was/is a good student of the game and played the 'coach on the pitch' role as a player

- He had a good career as a player

- and maybe he's been doing a good job with the youth side

Plus he has a strong relationship with Rafa and that could really help.

Fairy nuff...
Don't get me wrong - I hope nothing but good comes of it. I really want him to succeed; I want them all to succeed...
And tbh, none of us are in the business really i.e. we don't have the insider knowledge that they do, so let's hope Rafa is right about this.
I'm really not convinced about Sammy Lee though...

Sammy is a top coach and LFC through and through. I think its a good move bringing him back.
