he is hardly going to have excuses for the season as it hasnt started yet :D

the main point for me is with the aquisition of pace and attack at fullbacks with two holding midfielders then surely its important to have a player like Alonso who can rip a team apart IF he has passing options.  I would be happy to see Barry on the left with Dossena as the byline will be attacked and Barry has the skill and the option to move inside as well.

Also as he writes for the official site do you think he knows something about any wide men coming in as was hinted or does he just write this stuff and submit it but with no contact or inside knowledge

Just what I was about to write. I read about a paragraph of his rants and then get bored of his monotony. Just another pundit talking bollox. Ronaldo scored one goal for Portugal. I don't see him jumping on his back about it. Also, prolific scores like Shevshenko (at Milan) were hardly banging them in for their country either. What's your f*cking point, Tompkins?

I think he was actually defending Torres, mate.  He wouldn't be much of a happy clapper otherwise! :D  His point, in a nutshell, seems to be that even world beaters can be made to look ordinary when they play in teams that don't suit their strengths.  What separates this article from some of his others, though, is that he actually goes on to say, so what?  If one player isn't quite playing at their absolute highest level but the team is winning, what's the problem?

Aye, so he was just stating something people already know and have known for decades when it comes to players' form for club vs country. Tompkins is just doing what he does best: blow his own trumpet.

Agreed that Tompkins likes to dabble in the obvious quite a bit.  As for blowing his own trumpet (  :oh:  )...to be fair, this is his first column for the offal since May! :D
