Found this about it on CNN

The search, organized by a Portuguese lawyer who hired private divers, is due to resume Thursday, said the dive team member, Martyn Falkous, in a telephone interview. But he added it is unclear if it will continue after that.

The search was not requested by the McCann family.

The search at the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Praia da Luz, is the initiative of Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia, who told CNN he has never spoken to the McCanns but has sent them two letters and without receiving a reply.

Correia said, in a telephone interview, that he decided to search the reservoir after getting tips from his "underworld" sources, whom he declined to name publicly. But he said the Portuguese police and the McCanns' detectives know who they are.

"We've been contracted by a lawyer who's got some inclination that Madeleine was dumped in there," said Falkous, the diver.

Divers have "been picking up unnatural objects" from the reservoir's floor, including the cord, a sock and plastic bags, Falkous said.

Correia said they have found four strings, each with different lengths, and a sock. He said the items have been turned over to the McCanns' detectives, but Falkous said the items were given to "authorities."

Six divers have been involved each day, Falkous said. Because it is a very large reservoir with no visibility, he said, divers have concentrated only on the "very likely" places that a body might be found. He added that a complete search of the lake would take much longer.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell told CNN, "Correia (the lawyer) is entitled to search the area, but we do not accept the premise that Madeleine is dead, and there is no evidence to indicate her body is in this lake. Neither police nor the McCann investigators are present at the search."

DIVERS have resumed searching a Portuguese reservoir for the body of missing Maddie McCann.

They probed the site five weeks ago but returned yesterday after a “convincing tip” from the criminal underworld.

Firefighters and a local dive school joined the expanded search on claims Maddie was killed then dumped there.

The remote Barragem do Arade reservoir is 40 miles from Praia da Luz, from where Maddie, four, went missing last May.

It is near the Algarve town of Silves, where a lorry driver has claimed he saw the German girlfriend of suspect Robert Murat with a child in a blanket two days after Maddie vanished.

The McCann family’s investigators Metodo 3 know of the new search, which is being privately funded by Portuguese building firms.

But parents Kate and Gerry, both 39, of Rothley, Leics, still hope Maddie is alive.

Something very fishy going on in that Shannon story, I dont think Madeliene is still alive, I thought Shannon was.

Wondering if confirmation that it was Maddy's remains would actually come as a relief to the parents , as opposed to spending the rest of their lives wondering where she is .

Does that make sense ? .

The bones were found by divers in a reservoir some 40 kms from Praia da Luz
The Spanish detective agency Método 3 say they are bring some bones found at the bottom of a lake in Portugal back to Spain to have them analysed. First reports say that the bones are more likely to be from a small animal rather than those of the missing British youngster Madeleine McCann, but they are already in the hands of the detective agency for analysis.

A search has been carried out in the Arade reservoir all week by seven divers who have been working for the Portuguese lawyer, Marcos Aragao Correia. He has been working by himself for months in the search for Madeleine and says that it is 99% certain that the girl is dead, and that her body was thrown into the reservoir which is some 40 kms from the apartment where the McCann family were staying in Praia da Luz last May 3.

The lawyer says he decided to start his own search after receiving some clues in the case three days after Madeleine vanished, and that his line of investigation coincides with that of the Spanish detective agency contracted by the McCanns.

That makes sense to me. I guess it depends on your beliefs, but I preffer certainty and knowing she's resting in peace, rather than living with a glimmer of hope and wondering whether she's being abused or beaten.

I wonder aswell if this lawyer, and other people are using this case to their own profit.

Certainly does

We had 3 girls  murdered here in Perth in  mid 90s , one of girls bodies has never been found. They did a docu on her family some years later and her father still drives around forests around Perth at all times of the days digging up ground trying to find her body. Hard to explain in a post but it was frigging heartbreaking

The bones found in the resevoir were animal bones, not human remains.

The lawyer organising this "search" in the resevoir
has been trying to get companies to sponsor the work for £5000 each. So far only a local building company has done so.

From BBC News

Portuguese police are closing the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, according to local media reports.

Her parents Kate and Gerry McCann are both official suspects in the case, along with a third man Robert Murat.

But two newspapers claim the police have said they "do not have sufficient evidence" to charge the McCanns.

Madeleine, from Rothley, Leics, was three when she disappeared from the resort of Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007.

The Correio da Manha newspaper said on Tuesday that sources within Portugal's judicial police said they "do not have sufficient evidence to allow formal charges to be brought against the McCanns in the disappearance of their daughter".

The Jornal de Noticias said: "The police have not found the guilty."

The newspapers said the closure of the investigation would be announced within the next few days.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell told the BBC the couple did not know yet whether the reports were correct.

"If they are true, it's to be welcomed that Kate and Gerry are not to face any charges," Mr Mitchell said.

"It's quite right. They are innocent of any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance. They have suffered enough in this process."

Mr Mitchell said that if the investigation was to be closed, all the information held by the police must be made public so the McCanns could carry on their own search for Madeleine.

"What happens to all those leads, all those contacts? There are thousands of pieces of information in those files," he said.

"What we don't want them to do is lie on a shelf somewhere gathering dust."

Mr and Mrs McCann are due to go to the High Court on 7 July to ask a judge to order police files on the disappearance of their daughter to be released.
