Tft monitor and gaming

I currently play my 360 on a 20" CRT iiyama monitor but with the price of TFT monitors dropping in price I thought I'd look into buying one, my current monitor runs at 720p but isn't widescreen (which pi55es me off), I can pick up a HP 19" widescreen TFT with 8ms and 500:1 for £100 inc P&P, do you think it would be any good for gaming or should I look at getting a cheap 19" 1080i TV from Argos?  ???

My understanding is that a 1080i is no better than a 720p, and that if you want improved HD you would have to go for 1080p. I may be very wrong though mate, so I would ask someone to confirm it first.

Doesn't depend on the size of the monitor to get the 1080p?

1080i isn't much better than 720p.

In any event you won't notice the difference between 720p and 1080p on anything smaller than a 32".

Arguably you won't get a significant visual improvement at 1080p on an Xbox 360 as hardly any games are 1080p native.

This is what I'm looking at, I'm just waiting for the seller to get back to me, if he doesn't then I'm not buying it incase I have a problem and can't contact them:

You're spot on there.

1080p only really makes a difference on bigger screens like 40 to 50 inch beasts. Not only this, buying a 1080p TV for a 360 isn't really worth it. Most games arn't native to that resolution even if they say they are. In fact, the vast majority of games aren't even running on full 1080i or 720.

If I were you, Paul, I'd do what I did and buy a cheap HD LCD from Argos. I got a 26" Acoustic Solutions set for £260 and it does the job brilliantly. It was sitting beside other brands like Sonys and Samsungs, and I couldn't tell the difference in picture quality.

I'd go for something bigger than that, mate. At least a 23". You could pick one up for about 150 now in January. Doesn't have to be a monitor, does it?

It's literally just for my 360 (in the spare room) so it doesn't have to be just a monitor, I can afford £100 now or about £150 on payday (20th Jan) but got brakes to change on my car in Jan plus other stuff so I'm brassed, thus me not having much, really it's to save on space cos this iiyama is MASSIVE and also weighs a TON.

I might get a 22" one (like below) for £150 off eBay in a few weeks then, I hate waiting for stuff

Does the ratio matter, the 1000:1 and 500:1 confuse me?  ???

The visuals are awesome on it.

I get it now, the higher the contrast ratio the brights the picture, the one I'm looking at is 1000:1 with a 5ms response time so should be good enough for gaming.

If you are on a strict budget you're better off sticking to 720p for the time being because unless you plan on watching Blu Ray or HD-DVD 1080p is a bit of a waste in this generation of gaming as its becoming increasingly obvious that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 struggle at anything over 720p (with the odd exception) and 1080p upscaled won't look any different on any tv under 40".

That said, I plan on getting a 40"+ tv this year and it will definitely be a 1080p native set.
