I'm playing that now. I think there's some sort of update thing on the disc because when I first put it in the first time, it went to a screen with a bar at the bottom. Don't know what that was for, though.

Anyway, the game is class. If you grew up playing these sort of games as I did, it will take you way back to Mario 64 and beyond it. If anything, it reminds of of all the old NES and SNES classics.

I've watched the HD review of Mario Galaxy and I don't really like the look of it, I always loved side scrolling platform games and you can't beat Mario All Stars on the SNES (I still play it) but these 3D ones don't do it for me, I think I'll stick with New Super Mario Bros on the DS  :;):

Its getting amazing reviews, best game ever ones.

Call of Duty 4 is now done! 1000 GS - finito...end of...

what a f**king ride that was!! BEST game ever (in my new opinion) Seriously (OTT?) challenging in parts..frustrating in others. But generally BRILLIANT fun. Hats of to IW for this one. Millions of quid well spent on this blockbuster of a game. And it shrieks quality throughout...ok there are flaws (what game hasn't) but you'll go a long way to engross me as much as this has - its robbed my life completely for hours upon hours - and i'll STILL play it again after already nailing 3 difficulties. Veteran was a BITCH though - a real f**king test of every resolve going.

Online rocks too.   Can't say better than that. 10/10 Buy it.

I'd say certainly OTT. COD4 is a amazing game. It's quality and production values are off the scale in parts, but it has some design flaws to it. Infinity came dangerously close to making this game too repetitive. I found myself wishing that a break in pace would come in the form of a different style of combat in the gameplay or some kind of stealthy mission. Thankfully they broke up the play a little with some nice little levels like raining down death from on high with an amazing thermo vision camera, the sort you see on those clips of pilots taking out rebels on the net. Then there was the Chernobyl mission. I think most of the effort on the maps in this game went into that one. It had several varieties of gameplay in there. If it weren't for this level, the game wouldn't have been half as good.

It's a good thing IW spent a lot of time giving depth to the MP. I'd have loved something like that in the single player just to set it apart from the previous games. An option to go into the battlefield from any given point depending on the career path you chose at the beginning and trained yourself up. Say you pick sniper class: you take a scout, find high ground, and survey the area and take out MG's and snipers before the ground assault team moves in. Or you could train yourself up for heavy weapons and be part of that ground squad. Or how about operating a tank from inside it? Completely dynamic gameplay. I'd love to see that. But then again, Operation Flash Point 2 is coming soon, and it looks amazing.

For me, COD4 has great action and fun gameplay, but that's all down to the astronomical production that went into making it. Roll back the clocks 10 years ago, and you have a game that's better than it, both in design and gameplay mechanics and dynamics. The name's Bond. James Bond. Yes, it may be old, but I've yet to play an FPS on a console that's been better.

Sometimes you can be too picky when assessing a game and what it offers YOU the player...CoD4 (like i said) isn't without its share of niggles - but i've yet to play a game that hasn't some gripe here and there. For example both AC and Mass Effect are getting (slightly) rapped on their respective knuckles over similar issues.  I mean, come on...the hype can sometimes blur ALL the boundaries of expectation beyond sensible anticipation that should be considered. Who listens to these reviewers though in truth...certainly if you were new to the whole idea, it might be a reasonable place to start learning/researching your choice of purchases from...but, in the end its the users and the information they pass on - which is wholly more credible to me as a potential buyer of this software. The people who plow hours upon hours into the experience should know their onions come the day of reckoning.

Thats where i stand with this game. YES its annoying at times. OF COURSE it has 'some' design flaws. ABSOLUTELY its a short, but yet totally fulfilling Single player campaign. WITHOUT A DOUBT the best FPS online presently...and i sincerely mean that.

Its all about how you feel inside. Halo3 left me cold. Granted the MP is fun (ish). But ive little incentive to play the campaign again. Whereas CoD4 will still entice me back for another blast. Maybe its length is a factor in that...for instance take BIOSHOCK. Not a disrespectable 16 hour SP - quite a good length for a game. But something made me feel that i didn't want to replay it - great game btw...just, for the one playthrough.

Btw the OTT quote (which you cut off) was to describe parts of the VETERAN mode - and the infuriatingly difficult gameplay (one might say...'unfair' balance) between the spawn/accuracy of the AI. This is i believe to be one of the aforementioned flaws - they are just TOO damn zeroed in on your backside to give you a moments grace. Still, what a relief/achievement to nail it in the end. And again. i as a consumer am completely satisfied with the £40 sheets spent. That, at the end of the day - is what its all about. Production values are a variable factor in this; if the product (no matter HOW many fancy bells and whistles) manages to suck you in as much as this did for me, then i'd quantify that as a great success - the same as games of old have done. Substance over style you might say..

It's true that what you are saying about games like Bioshock and Halo 3. These games are epics, and are mainly driven by story. I haven't played Bioshock, but I was never swayed by the hype it was getting. Same with AC. The claims of Bioshock being one of those games that comes along once in a generation were a little bit too much for me to buy into. I'd seen gameplay of it, then played a  bit of it. Personally, it doesn't do anything as well or better than Half-Life 2 did, but yet it was hailed as the best thing since sliced bread.

Halo 3's experience was for me all in the co-op. To play this on Legendary online with a mate was some of the best fun I've had in a single player game in a very long time. I'd replay it again, but not on my own.

For the OTT bit that I cut out, I thought you were implying that maybe your opinion of "best game ever" was over the top. When it comes to that kind of view about such a accolade, I have very strict policies that I adhere to. I tend to go for the games that tear up the rule book and write new ones of their own. Genre defining games. For the console FPS, this genre bending game came in the form of Goldeneye on the N64. It didn't have flash and tight controls of a PC shooter, but what it did have was some of the best level design in any game ever, plus some of the most re-playable single player missions in a game ever. The levels were simply that good. Take for example, the ship level in COD4. It was awesome. Goldeneye had one like that of it's own and that wasn't even the best level in the game. Every mission was different and broke up the run-and-gun gameplay. The game was genius, and if it were to be updated today with better graphics, with physics, better A.I etc etc (don't touch the control and aiming method) then it was smoke anything out there, say the original didn't exist in the first place.

I'm not comparing COD 4 to Goldeneye. Well, maybe I am in fact. That in itself speaks volumes for COD4. Two of the best linear FPS's I've ever played on a console.

Golden Eye and Perfect Dark were awesome games on the N64.

Red, did you get Mass effect yet? I got mine but the CD isn't working (one of the flaws of buying a $10 cd).

Nah - the kids will get their christmas boxes bought first before i indulge myself again. I thought about AC and Mass Effect, but i dont know...something made me think twice. Im getting Guitar Hero III off the missus, so if i get any money off relatives etc..i might pick up Mass Effect later on when the fuss dies down and the game reveals its dark secrets!
