We all dream of a team of carraghers - Get wel soon

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I'm of the opinion that if indeed it's a collapsed lung, then it somewhat changes the whole dynamic of signing a new centre-back. Carra could concieveably be out for well over a month, which is plenty long enough to mean that when he does come back it'll need another three weeks or so for him to regain full fitness. Winnable games are all very well as long as you win them, and God forbid anything happens to one of the other lads (which it wouldn't surprise me if it did, football and life is like that).

It's now fairly obvious why Rafa was prepared to go to the best part of seven million for Hienze, or even prepared to countenance the signing of Lucas Neill. You need four fully capable centre-halves to run through a campaign, not for rotation and fecking about but to cover for injuries and suspensions. We currently have three, one of which is crocked and the the other of which has a dodgy hooter so the need is extreme.

It's time not for a loan, a stop gap or a car-boot sale. It's time to take the seven million we were going to spend on Hienze, and if it is what it takes lumping a little more in besides and going out and getting a serious centre back. Those that watch football from around the World would have a better idea than me, but I would have thought given the fact that we need somebody who can step straight in, then players like Curtis Davis (who I rate highly) are not the answer right now.

From what I've seen this season, we have a serious chance of winning the Premiership. Chelsea are probably the weakest they have been for the last three or four years, and without Rooney we have a chance to build a little gap on Man Utd. Rafa finally seems to have grasped that you have to pick a sensible team each and every week, and all in all it's looking pretty rosy. Gerrard and Carragher being out at the same time though is asking us a question. How badly do we want it? I hope we want it bad enough to go out and splash the cash. My hope is that we don't gamble here, the window shuts in a week and if we were to sustain another serious injury, then we would be fecked.

My one contribution to the "who should we sign?" debate would be a choice between Phillipe Senderos, Sylvain Distin and Anton Ferdinand, with a slight enquiry about that bloke who played against us for Porto a couple of years back and scored the header at their place. Big tall Brazillian who looked like a footballer to me (obviously I've got absolutely no idea about his name, who he now plays for, how old he is, whether he is in fact sh!te these days etc etc).

I hear what you're saying, but it sounds like Hyypia will be fine for Toulouse, and to be honest, that's why we kept him on - as good, experienced cover for Agger and Carra.

I actually think it's the absence of Aurelio right now that's making us look like we're a bit short at the back, as we're one more injury away from a problem, but with him apparently back in first team contention in a fortnight, I really don't think it's all that bad. Arbeloa's ability to cover at centre-back in particular is a very useful asset right now, and one which definitely gives us more options than some people are saying.

Senderos is an unrealistic option, he will not go anywhere IMO.

Distin has started a new chapter in his career with Pompey, I doubt he would move.

Anton Ferdinand is average IMO, and certainly no more accomplished than Curtis Davies.

Luisao is a good one, but Benfica will probably take the p!ss with their valuation.

Carraguer is well loved and deservedly so. Get well soon.

But apart from the charisma he has in among the fans, I'm well worried. Gerrard, Torres, other positions get a lot of credit but so often the CB do not. No matter that you bring another great CB, the accuracy of the back 4, how well he knows reina and his team mates, all that is only achieved through matches.

I fear more Carra's absence than tinkering with 3 or 4 players in rotations, to be honest. Get well soon!

Typical of the man:

Carra: I'll be back in two weeks
Jim Boardman.

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has played down his cracked rib and pneumothorax to declare that he’ll not be out for more than two weeks. Carra was injured during a collision with goalkeeper Pepe Reina in Saturday’s defeat of Sunderland. His cracked rib was discovered on Saturday but on Sunday he started to have problems with his breathing and went for more checks at hospital. That’s when the pneumothorax was discovered - a condition that sees air forced into a cavity between the lung and the chest and causes the lung to collapse. He was kept in hospital overnight but hopes to be allowed home today, test results permitting.

He spoke from hospital to local journalist Chris Bascombe of the Liverpool Echo, saying, “Because of the international break, I’m hoping to only miss the next two matches.” He’ll miss the game tomorrow against Toulouse and Saturday’s visit of Derby County, but then Liverpool get two weeks off, not playing again until they visit Portsmouth on September 15th.  Assuming they are successful tomorrow against Toulouse the Reds will be commencing their Champions League group stages on the Tuesday or Wednesday after.

Despite the 1-0 lead and away goal from the first leg, Liverpool are not presuming they are through the qualifier just yet. Rafa wants to field a strong team tomorrow and will be heartened by the news that Sami Hyypia is fit despite the broken nose. It does show how flimsy Liverpool’s cover is at centre-back. A fully-fit Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger would be hard to displace, and losing two centre-backs in one game is unusual, but Rafa will be trying hard to get cover before the end of the week.

Rafa told journalists at the weekend that he already had some players in mind as potential new signings. After the worries of Saturday he might even be able to persuade the new owners to stump up more than the near-£7m they’d promised for Heinze.

We don't need someone else according to peewee, maypaxvobiscum and some others;

Why don't we put Kuyt in Carra's position

He can blasts the ball away.
He doesn't score anyway.
He can run like a headless chicken and is all over the place.
At least he will do something for the 10m he cost.
Maybe he will hurt some forwards of the opponent.(by off target balls)

Another comment that the poster intended as sarcasm. Think, people, think, before calling someone an idiot!

Besides, he has some validity in his comment about Kuyt, ironiically. The man protects the back line as far up as the oppo's own box. It's qualities like this that we need when someone like Jamie get's injured.
