Interview with Gerrard

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

On .tv eairlier I saw the link to the sky sports website and the story "Gerrard Looking for Title Tilt"  It's below:

MEDIA WATCH
GERRARD LOOKING FOR TITLE TILT
SKY Sports 19 July 2007
Steven Gerrard insists that Liverpool are now equipped to challenge for the Premier League title.
Ryan Babel, Fernando Torres, Andrei Voronin and Yossi Benayoun have all arrived at Anfield this summer and the England star is convinced that The Reds are now ready to match the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

"I've watched what the other teams are doing in the market and they're all strengthening, but all those teams will be looking at us and thinking we are going to be all over them this season," Gerrard told the Sun.

"I'm not going to start making any unnecessary predictions about what's going to happen this season and the last thing any of us need to do is build hopes up too much.

"But without doubt, if we all perform to our level each week, we have the players to push United and Chelsea all the way.

"We are looking in great shape, not only going into this season but for the next few years.

"I thought going away for the summer that we were three or four players away from where we need to be.

"Now I think we are in a great place to challenge United and Chelsea and I hope if we get things right from the beginning we can beat them to the big prizes this year.

"I've liked the way we've done business this summer. Previous years have shown how important it is to sort everything early in the pre-season, as it's not easy for players if they arrive just before the deadline.

"Hopefully with everyone having had the right amount of rest this summer we'll be able to hit the ground running when the Premiership begins. People say you can't win the league in August but I believe you can certainly lose it in the first month.

"It's fine saying it's a nine-month season and there is plenty of time to recover from a shaky start but it's hard playing catch-up week-in, week-out.

"The last thing you want to do is give teams like Manchester United and Chelsea a head start, making things even more difficult for you than they are already."

Gerrard feels he has benefited from a summer away from football this year.

"I missed a bit of the last pre-season because of the World Cup. I came back and felt I needed more holiday," he said.

"I was mentally and physically drained at the start of the season but this time I feel I've had a break and we will go into the season brimming with confidence."

GERRARD TOLD THE SUN

Is this a mistake?  I'm sure I read in his book something along the lines of "you will never find the sun in my house."  I know he serialised his book in the News of the World (Sun on Sundays), and now with, if sky have their sources correct, is another example of him doing what he promised he wouldn't, and talking to the shitty little rag.

I hope this is a mistake on sky's part, but if it isn't.... I don't really know what point I am trying to make, I am just shocked and more than a little disturbed to find that our captain, a lifelong Red has been talking to the sun.

I'm hoping somebody will tell me this is wrong?

Sometimes players give comments to the written press as a whole and they are then quoted and interpreted differently in different papers - in this case he may have been quoted by a number of different media outlets, not only that but Sky are part of the same company as the s*n.

They may have used his words from another source or he may have been speaking to a general press audience, and they have simply claimed that he was "talking to" them.

I doubt it. I don't think Gerrard gave that interview directly to them as it's on the official site itself. The Scum probably just took it from there and Sky picked it up as their own story.

I hope that's it - it sounds 100% feasable, I know that the club and the HJC are seperate institutions, and I guess this might mean that the sun would have reporters in a press conference, the HJC would of course refuse to let anybody from the rag in - I was about to write that I'd prefer to see any reporter from the sun banned, but of course as you say Murdoch's umbrella wouldn't react well to that - a rift with Sky TV would be potentially disasterous for the club.  Given the introduction of the LFC TV channel I was wondering if anybody else was considering cancelling Sky Sports? (the TV channel can be viewed with the e-season ticket).

He was talking to LFC Magazine, rather than The S*n?

I for one am shocked.

It's so unlike that particular tabloid to mislead readers!

Wouldn't be the 1st time a Liverpool player/manager spoke to scum though would it? Let's not forget Graeme Souness spoke that paper shortly after his heart opperation. Also Gerrard himself has spoken to their sister paper "News of the World". He even gave the 1st look of his origional autobiography to the "News of the World", so it wouldn't of surprised me if Gerrard had spoken to them directly, fortunately though he hasn't.
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

Can we not have a restraining order put on the s*n saying they cannot quote our players without express permission? Considering they make half their sh1t up I don't think it would be unreasonable
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

Thought I might be able to change it since I started the thread but either I can't or I'm missing something?  Either way it's good to know that he wasn't speaking directly to them.
