Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Without Gerrard in the middle we don't half lose something. Nobody central gets up  and supports the striker/s. He's only playing there to accomodate Momo & Xabi, yes, they're quality players, but Steven is better, and central midfield is Stevens best position, therefore, Steven should play there.

The quicker he plays in his best position, the better.

Yes, but can you rely on Pennant to deal with Ashley Cole?

Against teams with a LB that doesn't like to get forward, Pennant's fine. But with an attaking LB like Cole, you need someone who's gonna be able to help Finnan out defensively down that flank.

I would go:

                      Reina

Finnan   Carragher   Hyypia   Warnock

Gerrard   Sissoko     Alonso    Aurelio

             Garcia
                           Crouch

The only temptation for me is Agger for Hyypia and Bellamy for Garcia. But the big Finn always come up trumps when people are doubting him, his dominance will be needed against Drogba, I expect Sami to put in a top draw performance if he starts. I love the Crouch/Garcia partnership, most of the time last season it looked most effective out of all the combos. When he plays of the strikers Garcia is such a pain for the opposition in terms of who should pick him up, so many times you see him all along with the ball because no one knows who should come out of position and take responsibility for him, what with there being a massive midfield battle between Gerrard, Alonso and Sissoko vs there 169 central midfielders Garcia might just find himself with the space and time to hurt Chelsea, but then again, he already hurt Chelsea twice so maybe they will have a plan for him, but I would play him.

And your optimism is based on what??? If your old enough, go to the bookies and chuck a tenner on a 3-0 win for Liverpool. I reckon the bookie will have quite a large smile on his face.

You live in cuckoo land mate

He's a windup merchant hence the 3-0 scoreline.

Or I have faith in my team.  :no

According to Elisha its 2 upfront plus.

Pennant - Alonso - Sissoko - Gerrard in midfield.

Don't have a clue who Elisha is Lynds, but if the two uptop include Garcia then my suspicion is that in actual fact the Spaniard will start on the left, making a 4-5-1. If we actually do start as you've indicated, with Gerrard wide-left then I think it's a ridiculous decision to waste our best player in such a way.
If we must move him out of best position, then by all means start him centrally but on the left? Not for me, ever.

Feck me Lynds you've got some connections girl I'll give you that. You don't very often get it wriong yourself so I can only hope that Pennant is going to play wide left (in fairness he did start there for the first 30 seconds as part of Steve Bruce's tactical masterplan when we beat Brum 7-0 last season).

bigmick wrote:I think Rafa will play 4-5-1 and wait and see what happens during the game. Of course we arrive at this point desperately needing a result following our below average start (after they lost to Reading yesterday I ask once more, how many of those people who claimed that there was an overreaction after our game still think a point at Sheff U was a reasonable result?) and the main criteria will probably be to avoid defeat at all costs.

It's probably correct despite the fact that Man U are disappearing over the horizon to concentrate more on Chelsea. Wednesdays scrambled win over Celtic showed that all is far from invincible at Old Trafford and the feeling persists that anybody who finishes above Chelsea will win the thing. A draw would leave us five ponts behind with a game in hand, while a win would put us two behind with that same outstanding game to play. Defeat, however would put us eight points adrift with a game in hand and not far off out of the equation.

John Terry was out of order for saying we would be out of it if beaten but in truth, history would suggest he'd not be far wrong. We can't expect Chelsea to lose often at the likes of Middlesborough and to give them an eight point start over our remaining 34 games or so would be a tall order at the very least. My suspicion is that we could probably afford to lose another three games in the whole season at the most, with six or seven draws and around twenty four or twenty five wins. Twenty five wins, six draws and three defeats would give us eighty five points. When you consider that even this may not be enough, it makes you realise that enormity of our task should we lose today, and also shows in sharp focus the folly of saying things such as "the league isn't won in one game, calm down, knee-jerker" and such nonsense.

Anyhow, what's done is done so for todays game my suspicion is he will drop Bellamy, play Kuyt uptop on his own and Gerrard as the focal point of a five man midfield, with Pennant on the right and Gonzales the now customary eyebrow raising selection wide left, Aurelio at left-back and Hyypia replacing Agger.

You never guess it right, but I think that's what he'll do. With the exception of Warnock at left-back and Aurelio at left-mid, it's what I'd do as well under the circumstances to be honest. The feeling persists however that had we approached the other games with anything like our strongest team, we would have been at least two and probably three points better off by now and we could have really had a go at them with two up front. Still, it is what it is and I think we might sneak a 0-0.

Big Mick

I think you are Rafa in disguise!!!

ill plump for:

                      reina

finnan    carragher   hyypia    warnock

gerrard    sissoko    alonso     garcia

               kuyt
                      crouch

agger is going to be class for lfc. but i think rafa rested sami on tuesday with this game in mind.
aurelio isnt pulling up many trees for me at the moment, whereas luis garcia seems to have the indian sign over JM. having said that, he and kuyt can both run the channels and interchange, causing a bit of havoc.
mark gonzalez though? remember him.. id like to see him at some stage, similarly, pennant. all in all it would be nice to see a bit more stability in the first 11. rotate all you like, but preferrably with the points of attack rather than the foundations...

at the start of the week i reckoned a draw would be ok. i still do. but something, just something in me corn flakes suggests a sneaky smash-and-grab.... :D  you have to have hope though!
