We ain't half doing bad - For a "skint" club

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Well it's been a very successful transfer window for liverpool and I have to say once again a big thank you to the board who have backed Rafa brilliantly this summer.

The main point though is in response to some numpty who came on here a few weeks back and started a thread entitled "even Spurs spend more than us". Well here's a little factoid for you all. We have spent more (net) in 2006 than the following clubs put together:

Tottenham
Manchester United
Arsenal

Maybe even Everton too.

In 2006 we've spent £25.9m net (possibly rising to £31m depending on the performance related bonuses for Agger and Pennant).

The mancs have actually had a net positive cashflow from transfers (£8m, dropping to £4m if they pay the full £18m on carrick).

Arsenal has had a net spend of just £1m at best, at worst they have had a positive cashflow from transfers upto around £6m (depending on what to believe on the cash element of the cole transfer and how much they've paid for Rosicky). Bring Walcott into the equation and we've still spent more than them.

Spurs is a bit more difficult to sort out. They sold Carrick for £14m (upto £18m) and signed berbatov for approx £12m, Didier Zokora £8.5m so from that it's a net of at best £6.5m spend, (dropping to £2.5m if they get all the carrick money). They've also bought mido from roma but I can't find a fee, nor for pekhart another of their signings.

So from that the three together have spent less than £10m net between them.

And just for a laugh if you add in everton's expenditure (who also have spent more than the above three, if you include the bonus payments dependent on success (stop laughing at the back)) it still comes in as less than our expenditure.

No bad for a club who "can't compete financially". :D

And we've signed far more better players than the mancs and everton put together :;):

Agreed, mate--we're holding our own.  It certainly helps getting this lot off the wage bill (although Diao should be on this list too  ):

1) Fernando Morientes: 30-year-old Spanish striker has left the club and signed for Valencia after a poor 18 months in which he made around 40 appearances for Liverpool but scored only 12 goals. He cost Liverpool £6.3 million and has returned to his home country for approximately half that fee.
2) Zak Whitbread: 22-year-old defender has signed on a free for Millwall after a successful loan spell for the Lions last season.
3) David Raven: 21-year-old defender signs for Carlisle on a free transfer after a successful loan spell at Tranmere last season.
4) Bruno Cheyrou: 28-year-old Frenchman - nicknamed the 'new Zinedine Zidane' - joins Rennes for an undisclosed fee four years after joining for £3.7m.
5) Ramon Calliste: 20-year-old Welsh Under-21 international striker joins Scunthorpe after a year at Liverpool in which he failed to make a senior appearance.
6) Dietmar Hamann: 32-year-old former German international released to join Manchester City on a two-year deal.
7) Chris Kirkland: 25-year-old glass goalkeeper loaned to Wigan for six almost certainly injury-plagued months.
8) Djibril Cisse: 24-year-old French international joins Marseille on loan for a season with a view to a permanent switch.
9) Antonio Barragan: 19-year-old right-back joins Deportivo Coruna for around £600,000 after just one appearance for the Reds.
10) Djimi Traore:26-year-old French defender signs for Charlton for £2m.
11) Scott Carson: 20-year-old keeper joins Charlton on a season-long loan.
12) Darren Potter: 21-year-old Republic of Ireland U-21 international joins Wolves on a season-long loan.
13) Anthony Le Tallec: Perenially on-loan striker heads out for this year's outing, back to Sochaux in his native France.
14) Neil Mellor: 23-year-old striker joins Preston for an undiclosed fee on a three-year deal.
15) Florent Sinama-Pongolle: 21-year-old French striker signs for Spanish club Recreativo Huelva on a season-long loan.
16) Jan Kromkamp: Defender offloaded to PSV Eindhoven.

We've had quite a few lads come into the squad this summer but this out-going list (courtesy of Football365.com) is longer than even I realized.  Well done, Rafa!

On the subject of our competitors' spending, I made a brief visit to the Manc message board that Ciggy provided the link for in the "Doncha Love" thread earlier today and I can tell you that the Scum fans are raging about the penny-pinching of the Glazers.  They recognize that their squad is paper thin and that a key injury could derail their season.  Arsenal aren't blessed with a lot of depth at the moment, either.  How would either of those teams cope, I wonder, with the kind of injuires we've had so far this campaign?  The fact that we're managing just fine thank you is a testiment, not only to the quality of our squad, but to the top job that Rafa and the Board are doing! :buttrock

If only he had stayed..

At least he would have been guaranteed a place on the sidelines.

Oh well..

Feel for Diao?  According to reports he turned down a permanent move to Recreativo because he couldn't agree terms, which basically means he wouldn't take a pay-cut to play regular first-team football.  He'd rather see out his contract at Liverpool and rake in the dough.  As far as I'm concerned, that makes him a leach and I have no respect for him as a footballer or as a person.

Not to play down the importance of what you are saying, but Spurs also signed Chimbonda, Malbranque, Ekotto, etc. That's probably 10 million pounds more worth of signings. I don't know their fees, but I am basing it on their asking prices..

Anyway, I am certainly happy with the backing Rafa has received in the tranfer market. You really can't complain. (Well, Alves would have done nicely...but I understand.) :D

yeah but i'm sure malbranque went in a swap deal with someone ???

nevertheless we've still spent more than the aforementioned, just.

Is that definitely right? My understanding was that he's not currently able to get through a medical, which made Recreativo's interest a non-starter before the window closed.

its amazing to think especially a club of our size and stature, that we still have Diao on our books.Surely there was a way of getting rid totally these last two years.Pay him up and finish his contract i say.In any normal job if your performance is :censored:,you get the warnings, then the push leaving with money owed, bit of holiday pay and a quick feck off ,good luck in the future bóllocks.I'm sure a team like Colchester united would love a player like him to warm their bench.   :D

Did Diao also get a Champions League winning medal?

Or was he on loan at the time?

He wasn't in the squad mate.

If I remember rightly, he didn't play in any of our CHampions' League games, save for the qualifying round where he scored.

Could be wrong.

id love to see what team like sheff utd or reading think about us calling ourselves a 'skint' club.

id say we are not skint, but we're just not finiancially inept like many other clubs looking for the quick fix. its nice to see that rafa is promoting a long term plan which is gonna show the world hes here for the long run
