sorry was rascist.

So what! if a bit name calling costs him his cool then it is (was) a major weakness in his game.

Rembember the bananas that JOhn Barnes had thrown at him, he just went about his business and became a legend.

Zidane should have kept cool, and tried to do something in the last 10 minutes. He'd have been a peno taker too.

I don't think a big deal should be made of what was said.

Until you're in that situation you cannot comment, on how he should of reacted and is there any point of still going on about it? What's done is done, France might well of lost even if Zidane had remained of the pitch or they might of won. It's all "what ifs" and "if's" its pointless thinking about it now. All I would say if Materazzi did use racist abuse then he should be banned from playing football, that's just as bad as the headbutt by Zidane. But as you say their is no proof of that, yet that is.

Good read there LFC. I read in a couples newspapers today and heard on the radio that Materazzi had said something about Zidane's mum.  If this is the case, than I can only think of one thing.  I'm sure you all know what I mean.

Matterazzi is just a stupid and idiotic tw@t.

why is he Matarazzi stupid? if calling your oponents mother a name causes the best player on the other side to be sent off then I'd recommend it be done every game.

I know I am in the minority here but I don't even think that calling somebody a racist name is worse than insulting their wife (how many posh spice songs were there), sexuality (remember Fowler and Le Saux), nationality (how many of you have written about the frogs for France or even referred to Irish as gypsies).

When it is on the pitch it is just a bit of name calling to put somebody off their game.

AS for the post of calling for a player to be banned for life for calling zidanes mother a terrorist - I heard worse in my local playground when I was a child.

i don't honestly believe he called him a terroist or said anything about his mother...he just gave him general abuse.  It happens everyweek and has been part of the game for decades.  Its the oldest trick in the book...wind up your man by giving him a kick/pinch and a volly of 4 letter words.  During the 80's and early 90s, Irish players would be called all sorts, none of them done what ZZ did.

For a player of his age and expereince, ZZ should have let it go and forced the words down the other guys throat by winning the world cup for France.

What i want to know is...if it was so bad, why hasn't ZZ told the world what he said??

Right Big Niall, so from now on everyone should start calling each other names to get people send off, start diving all over the place to get people send off, start rushing to the referees to influence their decision to get people send off?

Are you on drugs?

calling somebody a name doesn't cause them to be sent off, the fool who retaliates with a head butt causes himself to be sent off.

I'm with Big Niall on this one.  I don't condone racism and think that it's well out of order, on the pitch or off.  But...

1) we've got no proof that Matarazzi made a racist remark
2) Regardless of what he said and regardless of Zizou's sensitivity on the issue, Zidane should have known better

Players say all manner of things on the pitch all the time to wind opponents up--a lot of which you or I would find absolutely vile if used toward us.  Point is, a player of Zidane's experience should have learned to ignore the taunts by this point in his career.  Stay on the pitch, help your team win the trophy and then get in his face if you're still p!ssed, FFS!

He's definitely still a legend in my eyes but he alone is responsible for bowing out in this less than noble way.

He deserved to be sent off. Period.
If someone calls your mum a kunt, or launches a tirade of rascist remarks on you on the streets, and you assault him, who will go to jail?

FFS, taunting in any form can never justify an assault! ???

Materazzi admits to insulting Zidane

Marco Materazzi has admitted he insulted Zinedine Zidane prior to the head-butt which earned the Frenchman a red card in Sunday's World Cup final.

Zidane lost his cool during extra-time in Berlin and charged at Italy defender Materazzi, butting him in the chest.

Theories have abounded as to what Materazzi might have said to provoke such a response and the former Everton defender concedes he did make an offensive remark.

Materazzi, 32, told Gazetta dello Sport: 'I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering.

'He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, `If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true.'

Materazzi has not elaborated on what he did say, but one report suggested he responded with: `I'd rather take the shirt off your wife'.

He has denied, however, some of the more vile insults referring to his wife or sister or calling him a terrorist.

'It was one of those insults you're told dozens of times and that you often let fall on a pitch,' Materazzi said.

'I did not call him a terrorist. I am not a cultured person and I don't even know what as Islamist terrorist is.'

He added: 'For me the mother is sacred, you know that.'

The incident marked an unsavoury end to Zidane's career, especially as France went on to lose the match on penalties. The 34-year-old had said he would retire after the tournament.

Zidane himself is yet to speak on the incident but his agent yesterday claimed the reaction was due to a 'very serious' comment.

Suggestions that Materazzi's remarks may have been vile or racist in nature have raised the issue of whether he should face some sort of retrospective action himself.

Tournament organisers FIFA have given no indication they might pursue such a line but English referees chief Keith Hackett sees no reason why such a principle should not be established.

Hackett told BBC Radio Five Live: 'They are reluctant to take action after the game but here is a situation where, if there is proof, for the good of the game, action should be taken.

'I am pleased the Football Association, in May, wrote a circular to all clubs, through the PFA and LMA, reminding everyone that racist remarks constitute a sending-off offence.'

LOL he claims he doesn't know what a terrorist is.
What bullsh1t.
Anyway if he actually had called him a terrorist he wouldn't have come out in a press conference and admitted to it.

People just want a good and honest/fair game (It was the World Cup Final after all).  If Matterazzi did say those things, then IMO he is stupid.  Is this the only way he knows how to win games
