Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Not finished but thought new material was needed here now....

April 1985 – After a late review of the Heysel stadium, UEFA announce that the European cup final is to be moved to The Volksparkstadion in Hamburg after safety concerns over the Heysel stadium.

May – 1985 – Liverpool win their fifth European cup at the Volksparkstadion, in front of 60,000 fans. An early Vladimir Boniek goal gives Juve a half time lead, but two Ian Rush goals in the second half secure the cup for Liverpool. The win mans they keep the cup after having five victories in the competition.
In other news, Everton win the League title with 90 points, they also win their first European trophy against Rapid Vienna. But their hopes of a treble are finished by a Man utd win at Wembley.

June – 1985 – UEFA announce that the Heysel stadium is no longer fit for football matches. The stadium is promptly bulldozed and work begins on a new stadium. Liverpool manager Joe Fagan steps down as manger. The Liverpool board opt against the boot room tradition and appoint Kenny Dalglish as player manager.

Winter 1985 – Liverpool FC lead division one, 4 points ahead of West Ham utd. Steve Nicol and Jim Beglin become regulars at full backs. Liverpool play with Steve McMahon and Jan Molby are established post Souness as Liverpool’s central pairing.

A 3-1 home win for Liverpool against West Ham allows Everton to sneak up to second.

Spring 1986 – Liverpool smash 6 past Oxford utd without reply, strengthening their grip on the top spot. Liverpool make it to the European cup quarter finals after a 2-0 aggregate defeat of Steaua Bucharest. City rivals Everton also make it to the last 8, after a 1-0 defeat of Panathiniakos.

April 1986 – Two 5 nil home wins against Coventry and Birmingham leave Liverpool top of the league with two away games left at Leicester and Chelsea. Everton remain second and hope for a slip up. Liverpool defeat Verona of Italy 4-1 on aggregate to reach the European cup Semi final. Everton reach the semi finals as well after a 3-2 triumph over Bordeaux.
In the semi finals of the European cup, with a potential Mersey final, Liverpool win a tense game against Bayern Munich 2-1 at Anfield.
Everton are not so impressive. They are taught a footballing lesson by Johan Cryuffs Barcelona. The game at Camp Nou finishes 4-0 and any hope of an all Mersey final seems gone.

May 1986- No European cup final between red and blue perhaps, but in the FA cup the dream is realised as both teams make it t Wembley.
Everton host Barcelona at Goodison Park, knowing that they need a 5 nil win to make it past the Spaniards. Barca wins the game 3-2 but flaws in their defence are exposed and it becomes clear they are not invincible away from their Camp Nou.
Liverpool travel to Munich with a 2-1 lead, knowing a shut out of a rampant Bayern is the easiest route to Seville. An early Bayern goal destroys this but with 10 mins remaining Liverpool gets the 1-1 draw they needed, thanks to a late Jan Molby free kick.
The division 1 title is secured by Liverpool thanks to a Kenny Dalglish goal at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool now have the chance to claim a historic treble, with an FA cup final on the tenth of May and then the European cup final on the Wednesday.
Everton are beaten in the FA cup final 3-1 thanks to two Ian Rush goals in a pull sating encounter at Wembley.

The European cup final takes place in Seville, with Barcelona meeting the holders Liverpool. A crowd of 65,000 fans watch the game, in similar circumstances to the 1984 final as Barca are playing in their home country and bring 40,000 fans to the game. The game is a tense affair until the last half hour when the crowd start to get on the backs of Barca, and the 25,000 Scousers inside the ground spur their team on. Two Jan Molby goals and a late Ian Rush header give Liverpool their sixth European cup. This is also Liverpool’s second treble and is the first one of League title, FA cup and European cup.

I Like it so far. :)  It'd be so good if we could wind the clock back and show UEFA the folly of their ways. :(

great stuff mate :)
When you get the ball, I want you to beat a couple of men and smash the ball into the net, just the same way you used to at Bury," said Shankly. Lindsay replied: "But Boss that wasn't me, it was Bobby Kerr." Shankly turned to Bob Paisley and said: "Christ Bob, we've signed the wrong player."
