How were you feeling? - This time a year ago...

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Confident?  Nervous?  Bladdered? :p

Leading up to that huge night in Istanbul I was a mixture of anxiety and quiet confidence.  The lads, after all, had made it to the final through a combination of steely determination, timely goal scoring and a fair rub of the green.  We had seen off some impressive opponents and had refused to accept that we were a team in transition that could not mount a serious challenge for the European Cup.  All of our performances leading up to the final underscored to me that we had what it took to do it on the night.

Yet, if I'm honest, I was dead anxious in the days leading up to May 25th.  We were stepping out on the biggest stage in world club football.  Against the venerable force of AC Milan.  With Djimi Traore as our left back and Milan Baros as our lone striker, for Chrissakes!!!  :D  I figured we'd make a game of it but there was a strong possibility that Milan would find another gear in the final and put us in the shade with the entire world watching.  The thought of that had me more than a little uptight.

Looking back, it's easy to spout the standard platitudes: "it was fate, destiny...our name was on the cup" etc.  I've never quite believed that, though, despite the comeback, despite watching Jerzy save that Sheva double strike in extra time, despite the penalty shoot-out heroics.  We'd put together a fantastic European run--much to the cost of our league form--and clawed our way the finals but it could have so easily ended in tears of anguish rather than tears of joy.  How differently would this season have gone as a result?

No, there was no feeling of fate, no sense of destiny for me this time a year ago.  Just a supersized case of nerves threatening to overpower a modest sense of belief that it could be done.  I had no idea what I was in store for when I took my seat at my local that afternoon of the 25th--the rollercoaster of emotions that I was about to ride!  Now, one year on, I can still say it was one of the greatest rides of my life.

How I'd love to jump in Peewee's time machine now and revisit that pre-match moment in the pub.  I'd swagger in with a massive grin on my face, buy a round for my sweaty-palmed Red mates and tell each and every one of them to settle in and enjoy the ride...it'll be a little rocky for the first while but good god will it be a rush at the end!  :D

Thanks for the memories LFC 2004-2005...the word "Istanbul" will forever bring a smile to my face!

Walk on!  :buttrock

I'd go back and put my life savings, house, car, family on the Reds winning at half time LOL. Instead of the measly $50 i put on us 1 week before the match. :D

I was on the sh*tter for most of the day!

I was so anxious, and like you, Bob, I didn't want us to get shown up on the big stage.

At halftime I just felt like joining my sh*t that had gone down the pipe. :D

The rest you all know already!!!!! :;):

I woke up in the hotel in Istanbul to see my mate fully clothed, shoes an all, on his bed cos I had to carry him back to the hotel the night before.
We met another mate in Taksim square that afternoon, he was with the guitarist from the La's.

I'll always remember finding our seat. The ticket said West stand upper tier, row 69.
But when we got into the stand we found our ticket was for the front row! of the upper tier.

We were on the first plane out of Istanbul.

When I got back I was supposed to do a nightshift, so I rang work at 4pm and said I'd only just got back;
so I could see the tour of the city.

Happy Days.

I was still going through my ridiculous "If I watch Liverpool, they'll lose" superstitious phase (probably brought on by Houlier's last season). I knew I had to be as far away from it as possible. So I booked two tickets for me and a mate (who hates football) to go and see Star Wars 3. When I got out, I was talking about the film so much, I forgot about the game... until I got to the taxi place and all the drivers were watching as Shevchenko scored to make it 2-0, until it was ruled offside. By the time I got home it was halftime. Flicked over and it said Liverpool 0-3 AC MIlan. And I remember saying to myself "Well, what harm can it do if I watch now". So I sat down with a couple of bottles of beer and a bowl of Tortillas and prayed that we weren't going to be embaressed. :D

May 25 2005. So where were I ?????
The easy answer is Block 342 Row 69 Seat 551 Upper level.
But there is also a longer version ...

The 10 Things I will never forget about May 25th :

1. Morning. I wake up at the Marmara hotel hearing noise from the street. I go to the big wall size window and look to what was supposed to be Taksim square. I see a sea of red. UNBELIEVABLE!!! all taksim square is full with thousands of LFC fans.

2. Going down to the Istiklal street with my friends. The Irish pub is packed with Liverpool fans. On the second floor of the pub we see dozens of LFC fans sitting on the edge of the balcony and singing. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

3. Taking a taxi to the stadium. In the middle of nowhere, when trafic stucks the driver tells us it's a short walk from here. We pay him and start walking .... 90 minutes later, and after walking in cow shoot (well, lots of cows in the side of the road/path) , we see the stadium.

4. Entering the stadium we find out that our seats are on the left side, above the corner flag, and just above the amazing Milan fans (hats off to the show they made there).

5. Half time. We are down 3-0  . I am shouting in hebrew to the crowd "come on! start suporting the team!!!!!!!!" . My friend tells me "they dont understand your hebrew" :)

6. Minutes later. 50,000 people are singing the loudest YNWA I ever heard. Milan fans on my left are amezed and join us. UNBELIEVABLE!!! tears are in my eyes ...

7. My freinds went to buy beer at halftime. Minutes later the come back running. "hey, there are no guards in any entrence !!!" we run outside, end enter in the best place. Midfield, lower level. All LFC fans are standing so no seats problem anyway. "kop" is to our right. Milan fans to the left. And Gerrard is running just 20-30 meters away from us. ONLY IN ISTANBUL!!!

8. 3-1. 3-2. 3-3. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! at that point we ALL know that our names are writen on the cup.
LFC fans are singing (to the Milan fans) "your'e not singing anymore ... "

9. Dudek saves Shevchenkos penalty. Than YNWA, queen's we are the champions, than "you're simply the best".

10. 30 minutes later we grab a bus that is supposed to bring us back to the city. In the bus there are about 76 lads from Liverpool singing all the way back LFC songs. ALL songs. (well, we had 3 hours to fill). The Lads even sang the Ronnie Rosental song and the 4 Israelis in the bus couldn't stop smilling :D (yes, they packed 80 people in each bus) - do I have to mention that turks never heard about air conditioning ???

May 25th. I will NEVER forget this day ...
