If fowler is god... - Is gerrard god's father?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

After Istanbul you never felt Liverpool were out of this, except for maybe when Stevie got injured.  Suddenly it didn't look like he could carry on, and we lost that edge.  Of course we were all wrong - that's probably the best goal I've ever seen.  So, now that the season is over - just how good is this guy compared to other great Liverpool players.  Is he more of a legend than God, or the King?

We all know how good he is and how important he is to this current Liverpool side, that's been covered many times and I do not want to reopen the debate about whether or not we are a one man team - but two questions.

1.  How does Gerrard stack up against other legends having taken the Reds to thier second trophey in two years, after those comebacks - both in terms of legend status and quality.

2.  How does his performance today compare to other great performances, like his own in Istanbul, or Carra's against Chelsea.  How does todays individual effort stack up to the great individual performances that this club has produced in the past?

I read an interview with Carragher the day before the final. He said that he thought Gerrard was only second to King Kenny when thinking of all the legends the club had. Even though he was still younger then Kenny when he signed for Liverpool. He also went on and said that if Gerard could capture a few League titles then it would defiantly sway in his direction.

And believe me Carra don’t talk no guff.

Good to see you posting again Tom.  You should post more.

Unfortunately, my brain isn't working properly.  I've had a few cans, and I will have to answer your questions tomorrow when I'm better.  Going the boozer in a bit.

Me too! (Well I've just got back) absolutlety gattered.  My mate says Andy Gray creamed himself when God's father scored.  I watched it on the beeb.  I've put the coverage on sky pause (as well as record) so I can skip the ads.  Hope to see this rare moment of Andy Gray giving us the credit we deserve.

Regarding posting more - I tend to lurk more these days.  I posted a couple of things before and after the Benfica game, and something regarding the atmosphere vs Fulham, since I was able to get to that game.  To be honest there's been more reading to do recently - by the time I think of an arguement somebody else has already posted it.

I honestly believe Gerrard is the finest player EVER to don a Liverpool shirt.  The guy is outstanding.....

I just cannot comment on Gerrard's comparability to the past legends, as most played before my time.

Stevie IS the best player we have, and for my money is even a better player than Ronaldinho. (He isn't as technically gifted, but his effect on a game p*sses all over the goofy maestro.)

I always said Alonso is better, but after today it is hard to justify that claim. I still think Xabi is the better passer and controller, but Stevie just has that ability to kick a game in the nuts and say "F*ck you - I'M the boss."

If there is a better player in World football, then I've yet to see him.

Having said all of this, I still get the feeling that Fowler will still be the fans' number 1, as he just has that Del-Boy-esk persona, and everybody can relate to him.

(Taking nothing away from Stevie, I'm just saying that Robbie is a more likable man.)

Either way:

Before Gerrard came along, I'd always held King Kenny up as the greatest ever...... Now, I'd say say that Gerrard would give Kenny a close run....

If you'd asked me yesterday, the euphoria of the victory would've made me give Gerrard the vote..... but today in the cold light of day and sporting a blistering hangover....... then I'd say Kenny is still the King.... The day he signed for us from celtic is indelibly etched into my brain as the finest bit of business the clubs ever done....

Stevie still has a way to go.... but he's not far off the mark now.....

I'm just glad he's ours and not fuc*ing Chelski's.....

Our New God
His name is Gerrard
Hollowed be his Name
His kingdom will come
His will has been done
From now
and when we beat chelski
Give us this week our weekly goals
We forgive your miss-passes
as you punish those who miss-pass against us
For Anfield is your kingdom
The fans your power and glory
Forever and ever
Amen

Top posts Lando and Imkhawx - thats what I was driving at.  I too feel that Robbie is probably the favourite - probably because despite all his brilliance he has those few flaws which, unfortunetly have been used by an obnoxious media to define him.  I read his autobiography and the bad luck he had around the England set-up contributed to the fact that he was never a golden boy England favourite and was treated harshly in the press as a result.

I guess he didn't help himself with the antics against Everton, but in his book he comes across very strongly as anti-drugs and you get to see the real Robbie - a bit of a cheeky guy, but still brilliant.  In that way he seems more human than the superhuman Gerrard - who is SO good that he probably comes across differently.  It's all about perception I guess.  Either was Stevie and Robbie are both gods - and together with Carragher give this team the fighting spirit that holds it together.

Although what Imahawx said about Kenny and Stevie I agree with to a certain extend - I think Stevie's childhood love for the club shades it for me in the legendary status debate.  Yes, he nearly left (twice) on the other hand he resisted moving to a more glamerous club and city (twice) to stay with, and captain his boyhood team.  Kenny played in an era of greats, Gerrard is the first of a new era of greats and even if it's just for Istanbul and yesterday sometimes he is Liverpool - Kenny was one of many at the time (he played with Rush!) I'm not saying Kenny wasn't as magical to watch - he just couldn't single-handly change games (or finals!) like Stevie does, because he always had a helping hand or six!

Steven Gerrard - what can I say about this fella? I was one of the 30,000 Liverpool fans yesterday who were in disbelief as West Ham sailed into a 2-0 lead. If this was last years F.A Cup Final I would of given up hope at this point. However after last years heroics in Istanbul - I kept telling myself , don't stop believing. Then Steven picked the ball and floated a perfect pass into the path of Dijbril "I own more boots than Adidas" Cisse.
Then he brought relief to all the fans in the 54th minute when he lost 3 men, YES 3 MEN, and smashed the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the Anfield faithful. When it fell to Gerrard everyone knew it was going in , what a goal, what a player. However the best was yet to come.

Paul " Big Jan took the pi55 out of me all 2nd half" Konchesky obviously had , a four leafed clover in his left boot, as he scored the luckiest goal ever seen in a F.A Cup final. It was at the point I truly thought West Hams name is on the cup, all three goals were errors that we had not done all season, and 3 in one match!!! Come on give us a break. I was contemplating my 6 1/2 hour coach ride back home and thinking of all the messages off my bitter friends that would be on my mobile. :(

However once again, Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Man!!! The ball dropped and bounced out to Gerrard a full thirty five yards away from goal. and with one swipe with his prized right foot, the ball took off. I was right behind the ball , ROW 7 Seat 11, and I watched in awe as the ball swerved in and nearly burst the onion bag!!! The stadium errupted, I was screaming my heart out and was the happiest fan alive - probably what everyone was thinking. And it was all thanks to this man.

Make no mistake about it . Steven Gerrard won Liverpool the F.A Cup yesterday. Yes its a team game, and the whole team contributed to the performance (where the :censored: was the real Finnan yesterday!?!?). But IT was Steven Gerrard that won that cup, no gerrard no cup. I know the phrase one man team was labelled at us, unfairly, in the past but Gerrard ran and stole the show yesterday, in what was the greatest F.A Cup final of them all.

Steven Gerrard is by far and away the best player in the Premiership today, you can keep your Henry's and your Rooney's he grabs the game and plays it how he wants it to be played, on form he is untouchable like yesterday. I for one lost a bit of faith in Stevie, after the brief flirtation with Chelski, I lost a little love for our club captain, I even tbh was a little disapointed he stayed after that fiasco, but Steven you had made me very humble indeed. There is and never has been a player quite like you.

King Kenny is a legend, Fowler is a God, but Steven is on a path to much richer paths.

Thank You

Kenny is the top legend, Gerrard is already a legend even at his present age of 25 years old.

How does he stack up when compared to Kenny? Too early to tell but at this juncture, Kenny is still ahead. Carra is not wrong in what he said and some of the younger members here should watch some of Kenny's games from his first season in 1977/78 to when he played with Rush until he eventually retired. He is the greatest.

Both kenny and Gerrard are peerless.

Like others I can't really compare Gerrard to some of the other club legends because it was before my time.  I've seen a lot of footage of players like Dalglish and obviously you can see he deserves legend status.

I have to say though that it's hard to imagine any player having as much of a positive effect on a team as Gerrard does on this current side.  I think it was St Mike who said Gerrard is the ultimate big game player and that hits the nail on the head.  When the chips are down he almost always pulls something special out of the bag.  That second goal yesterday was simply unbelievable - last minute of the FA cup final, 3-2 down, 30 yards from goal, ball bobbling along and then bang - couldn't have hit the ball any sweeter.  And it's the fact that he does this kind of thing on a regular basis that's so impressive.  Best midfielder in world football as far as I'm concerned.
