1/3 of my salary goes in to paying taxes, NI and my pension contribution, I signed-up to the LGPS on the basis of a final salary pension, and my contributions have increased in line with climbing the 'so-called' career Ladder, If I'm on £60,000 pa, my final stake in the pensions sheme should reflect that .. gawd knows they take enuff to fill the coffers at the mo.. My Council tax goes through my salary too ..

don't bite the hand that feeds you zar, those of us who are self-employed or work for small firms are paying your wages, and could only ever DREAM of the kind of pension scheme & benefits you have, even after the proposed changes :p  :;):

.. excuse me.. the hands that feed me.. you mean like my contributions and yours for that matter .. towards the provision of local services and national services.. looks like we are all in the business of feeding each other.

One of the only perks of local government was the LGPS, cos there are no private sector-type bonuses for hard work and improvements to local services achieved, other than positive satisfaction surveys, which then impact on inspection outcomes, leading to better 'star ratings' for public bodies.. contractually we have all payed contributions on the bais of a final salary pension scheme.. just like if you win a game of footie you get three points.. not 2 or 1 .

BTW my other half is self employed too :;):

I know what its like to have your pension cut by the goverment zara. My other half used to work in Richards Fertilizer's in Belfast's harbour estate. It went into liquidation in Nov 02. He thought like the many hundreds that worked there (some of them for 40 years), that their pensions and redundancies would be paid out. We worked it out that he should have got £19,500 redundancy and a good pension when he retired. Bearing in mind that most of the men that worked there bumped up their pension payments every year, they are now entitled to 15% of what they paid into. They did'nt even get what they had hoped for in redundancy. Billy only got £8,000. There was a shortfall of £5 mil or more and theres nothing they can do about it.
One of the workers (who was meant to retire in Jan 03) is taken the goverment to court over this. He worked in Richardsons all his life and now has nothing to show for it. I wish him all the best and I hope he kicks their a$$.
I hope that your strike has the desired affect you want and you get what you are entitled to when you retire. Because its not a nice feeling when you dont. Good luck.

the funny thing is that I only just joined the union last month.. been in Local governmnet for 10 years and was never part of the unions  :D

.. I think that as with all pension schemes, private and national, the reality is that it's about affordability and being able to meet the expected outturns. A bit like the 'endowmnets' which promised so much and left many out of pocket and a mortgage still to pay when the period was up.

Not gonna hold me breath, the government will do what they will, but a protest asking the powers that be to keep to a contractual agreement is the right thing to do  :)

My partner was in the union and to be honest I dont think it made any difference. They fought for them for a year or so and the lads all gave them money to take their case to the European courts. But they still have'nt heard anything.
Billy was on £35,500 a year and at one stage was paying over £120 a week into his pension. (he was single when he paying that!!). But now he's only entitled to 15% of that. I mean, if people are paying these amounts into pensions to make them comfy in old age, where is it? Who has that money?
Everytime a letter drops on the mat from Richardsons, he thinks its a cheque with the rest of his redundancy and a 100% pension.
I'm self employed and I don't have my own pension. I have 40% of my ex husband's calor gas pension, which I get when he retires.  But I have a high interest savings account, that I pay into every week. So hopefully when I retire I will have enough in the bank to keep me.

Too true Kazza, my other half does not have a pension neither, but you know what like your self, we are doing what we have to provide for retirement and for our future generations.. everyone works had for their bit in life, well many of us do.. I think it is easy to criticise each other about what lot we get in life, but like many on PAYE, most of my deductions go before I can 'fiddle' the accounts to pay less to the tax man.. :D so let us have our day.. I doubt it will make any difference..

zar i wouldn't worry about the final salary scheme, it would be political suicide for any government to scrap that - this particular protest is largely about the "85 year rule" being abolished - this was a rule that stated if your age + your number of years pensionable service added up to 85 or more then you could retire on maximum pension as early as 60. now you will have to wait til 65 regardless of how many years you've had in the scheme

compare this to most other pension schemes: a) retire on f*ck all b) retire on f*ck all with a kick up the @rse

I hate pointing this out but feel that I should, a pension is an investment, and the value of it can go up or down or if the company you invest in goes bust it can disappear altogether.

The answer imo, is not to have all you're retirement eggs in one basket.

the government is putting in place some kind of safety net to stop pension funds going bump with a company and not before bloody time either

to see a fella work his entire working life only to see his hard-earned pension go up in smoke is criminal
