:)

i see where you're coming from lionheart especially about parents smoking around their kids (inexcusable imo) but let's not get all daily express alarmist about it. i'd rather die happy at 75 than miserable at 76 after a lifetime of worrying about health & safety

Cheers Woolly. I think we're on the same track and there are many getting aboard the same 'express'!!!  :D

Christ sake , ban smoking in Pubs ? Why not go the whole hog and ban Alcohol in pubs as well . I hate walking into a pub and smelling last nights stale ale , nip into the bog and wade thru a sea of vomit ,back into  to the bar only to be stuck next to some t'wat eating a plate of chilli con carne !

You're all a bunch of fags   ( no pun intended  :D  )

I'm a smoker. I was in Dublin recently and the smoking ban in the bars etc did'nt bother me. But then we where doing a pub crawl and I was able to smoke in between walking to different bars.  :D
But I do remember, a few years ago, a bar in Ann Street, Belfast, became a non smoking bar. I did'nt last to long. People where coming in, buying a drink, lighting up and being asked to put it out as it was non smoking. The customer left pretty quickly. So now its gone back to being a normal bar.
But I do agree with not smoking around kids. They should'nt have to breathe it in. So many kids now days have asthma and chest problems and their parents smoke around them. As adults we have the choice, kids don't.
And Mikz is right about the ban in NI. We very rarely go out and the offie is our favorite place. My house is coming down with blue bags from the off licence. The price of drink in our city centre bars has gone up so much that a night in the town is a no no for most people. So as he said, we go to other peoples houses, because its cheaper.  :D

ohhhh just be honest will ya Karen, you got fed up spending the night in the cells  :D At least we were assured of a good fry up -breakfast in bed. Imagine a smoking ban in Laverys -it would be like a morgue in there :talktothehand

I've only had about ten ciggy's in my life, one of them is on this forum...  :D no only messin sorry...

No seriously though, I don't smoke, however i think its wrong to ban smoking in pubs. In restraunts yes, in public place like indoor shopping centres, buses and trains yes, but not in a pub. If people don't like it they shouldn't go to pubs in the first place, its part of what happens, most people accept it and get on with life, just because some do gooder thinks its wrong to smoke in public doesn't mean it should be banned.

What else are they gonna "ban"?

It seems to be this countries answer to everything...

Ban guns,
ban fox hunting,
ban fireworks,
ban free speach unless you're part of the ethnic minority,
ban boxing.

What next?

Stu you forgot to add . The "Golly" badges (from Robertsons jams) and Noddy books in your local library on the grounds that Noddys relationship with Big Ears was of a questionable  nature .

Im a smoker myself!!
Was in Dublin over Xmas and as we all know theres no smoking in bars down there!!
Being honest i'd welcome a ban in the UK with open arms..
I cant imagine how it must be like for a non smoker walking into a smokey bar/restuarant for a pint or some food!It makes me sick at times and i smoke ffs!!

All the good bars down south have purpose made aresa for smoking, some of them are so well made you would'nt even know you were outside!
Its a lot better walking into a smoke free bar spending a few hours and coming out not smelling like an ashtray with the eyes stung out of your head!!

Theres no reason why people who choose not to smoke should have to breath our toxic fumes!

Theres talk of a full or partial ban coming into power in NI soon and it wont annoy me in the slightest!!

they introduced a voluntary ban over here (barcelona) on the 1st jan this year aswell. if you have a bar or restaurant of less than 100 m squared you could choose to be smoking or not, if you have more than 100 m squared you have to provide a smoking area with most of it for non smokers. as 99% of the bars here are small ther are now 99% of bars with signs on the door saying 'you may smoke in here'. nothing has changed

the weird thing now though, is that you can't smoke in the bank or post office or the airport anymore.

i've smoked on and off for 23 years, and have recently been getting near being full time after a couple of years fully off. i was actually really hoping that my local would ban smoking - partly so i'd be able to resist smoking and partly so i could go in of a sunday afternoon with my girlfriend and little boy.

i still believe however that it is wrong to ban smoking out right in all pubs. the pub is one of the great pillars of british culture and there has never been anything wrong with it. then more people start f*cking about with what you can and can't do in a pub the more another great british institution will become unrecognisable and disappear. a bit of respect is required for the bar staff though, of course- i.e. don't sit there chuffing smoke in their faces.

ban it in restaurants, ban it in trains, ban it in churches, schools and errr planes - but leave the pubs alone. :D
