There has been a lot of slating of GH in these boards especially in reference to his signings.
I find it offensive as he was very successful when he was here and it was he who set the high standards that Rafa had to meet.
Now three years on since his departure his influence is this within the team.In our last game against portsmouth,these are the former GH players who helped us win the game:

sami
carra
riise
stevie
finnan
kewell

And cisse would definately have been in Houllier's squad if he'd stayed on.

All am saying is,give Houllier the respect he deserves :buttrock

Carragher and Gerrard where not his signings, they where produced by the academy which doesn't count IMO.

So that means 4 players from the Houllier reign are good enough to play in a team managed by Raffa Benitez...

Well I must agree, that is £120 million well spent!!!!

Carragher,Gerrard and were produced by the academy...true but it was houllier who game them a chance to play at the highest level.
At the moment,we are selling our best emerging talent which is demoralizing to the others coming up.Look at the promising youngsters we are disposing of at the moment...
So give GH his due credits....if we had another manager at that time we most probably wouldnt be having carra or Gerrard.

As opposed to Rafa's signings of Alonso, Reina, Garcia, Sissoko and Crouch.

No Contest, Rafa is the man. At least if any signing he's made hasn't performed, it hasn't cost us the earth cash wise.

How did you come up with the £120 million figure?
Anyway GH made loses in some players but some have brought in cash or invaluable services.
Whilst Diouf and Diao were loses,Baros and Hyppia were definately good signings.Baros was sold for a good profit and can you quantify the value of samis contribution to the teams defence?!

And anyway with Gerrard valued at close to £100,i'd say he left us much richer and happier

Gerrard isn't worth £100 Million, no players is. And we only get the money if we sell him. Can't see that happening. Did we make a profit on Baros?? If we did, it'd go some way to filling the void of debt we lost on Diouf!

Yes I'll say that GH made some good signings, but the bad out way the good 2 or 3 to 1.

Yeah I resepct GH cos when he left the club it was in a better possition than when he arrived but he squandered a lot of money on sh1t3 like:

Biscan
Le Tallec
Ferri
Diao
Diouf
Cisse (not saying he's sh1t3 but not £14m!)
Heskey
etc.....

Even Stevie Wonder could have seen Gerrards potential and Jamie Carragher made his debut before Houllier arrived.

If Rafa was manager at the time, do you think he wouldn't have given those two a chance?

Home grown developement doesnt count - but if it does, Rafa is giving the kids more of a go and is always looking at trying out our younger players. Houlier didnt give a rats :censored:

about the academy.

And is crouch the prolific striker worth the 7m dished out on him?

Basically Houllier did leave the club in a better state than he found it, but not a good enough state considering the money he spent.

His signings were too hit and miss. For every good player he found such as Hyypia there were about 3 duds.

His downfall came about because he refused to accept the responsibility for his own mistakes. Instead of holding his hands up he made excuses which ultimately lost him the rerspect of the fans and players.

Did we lose money on pellegrino? He was only on a 6 month contract! nunez we sent back, all he cost was wages. josemi we swapped for Kronkamp ( who seems a better player ) and I seem to remember everyone on here wanting morrientes to sign!! ( He's not a bad player, he just can't play the english game ) As for Crouch, he may not be prolific, but he works damn hard and is just what Rafa wants. A target man.

Houllier's great, awesome and fantastic!

He won 5 trophies (if you count the tradisional EPL curtain raiser as a trophy and if you really think that the UEFA Super Cup is really a more than a lightly regarded one off match organised by UEFA and forced onto the CL winner and the UEFA winner) in one calender year. This is an amazing feat, not even the great Bob Paisley, nor the modern successful managers like Ferguson or Wenger has managed a haul like this!

Ckay, although your arguements are full of logic, don't fight the man, just remember the great times Houllier brought to us.

He declared a 5-season plan but sadly was only given 6 seasons by Moores and Parry to stay on as Liverpool manager. He also broke the transfer record Liverpool paid, dishing 14 million on Cisse. Before him, no other Liverpool manager even dared to stump this amount on any player. He is boldly laying the marker that Liverpool should spend big! What a man...

I can't deny the Trophy haul that season. It was also a cracking game against Alaves in the final. But he still never won one of the big 2. EPL or CL. Rafa's won the 1 in his first season and working on the other. If it wasn't for Chelsea buying the league, we'd be closer now.

you can not compare the two managers

When GH was here i used to look through my red tainted glasses and try and defend him by saying he turned the club around.

But with age you relise that the bloke didn't have a clue .

Roy evans was given no credit for the team he built and apart from collymore, which imo was his downfall. We had a team of good youngsters the academy was churning out players left right and centre.

But that all stopped under GH. true he bought sami and steffan(both i thought were gonna be cr@p, but what do i know) but he bought a long list of no marks who degraded LFC to a team fighting for mid to top of the table. and the only reason we keep our heads above water was players like

Gerrard ... academy
Carra ... academy
Owen ... academy
Rednapp ... Evans/souness
Robbie ... academy/souness
barnes ... glory days

are you getting the piture? I don't why you bother sitting at home thinking up annoying things to post. did your mother not hug you enough?
